Letter from the Competitive Department Leader Page 1 Dear Parents, Welcome to the Team Legacy competitive program. We are delighted to have you join our team! If you are reading this team manual, then your child has already impressed us with his or her gymnastics talent and potential. This document's goal is to provide you with more insight. into how our program operates and answer many of your questions. We still reserve the right to modify procedures and policies as the case may arise. Gymnastics helps develop confidence and enhances a child's growing self-image. It provides a solid foundation for many other sports and recreational activities, as well as a lifelong appreciation of physical activity and the mental challenges accompanied by sports participation. Your child's association with gymnastics and Team Legacy will have a positive effect now and throughout his or her life. Some of our main goals at Team Legacy include the teaching of important life skills, including self-discipline, self-motivation, integrity, self-respect, respect of others, and a strong work ethic. As a member of Team Legacy, your child has chosen to make a significant commitment in time and effort to the sports of gymnastics. The head coaches, coaching staff, gym owner, and I all greatly honor the extraordinary effort required by the athletes in this sport. Parents must also make a significant commitment of time, money, driving, and team participation if the benefits of sports participation are to be realized. This handbook provides information on what you can expect from Team Legacy membership, and what Team Legacy expects from you. It takes a team to develop an athlete and a person. The coaching staff and gym owners pledge to work together in order to help your children turn into capable and well-rounded young adults. We are the best group of people you could ever have the opportunity to work with and we are confidant that you will enjoy being involved. We look forward to your family s participation at Team Legacy! Thank you, Lee Coltman Department Leader of Competitive Programs

Page 2 Mission Statement Coach Patty s Mission Statement To provide a supportive and challenging learning environment where every student is prepared to make a significant difference in their own life and the lives of others, and to help kids grow into happy, healthy responsible adults. Team Philosophy: Our first goal at Team Legacy is to develop each individual s gymnastics potential in a safe, yet enjoyable atmosphere. Second, we seek to use the sport of gymnastics to help each child gain greater self-confidence and a more positive self-image. Third, to provide the mental and physical discipline needed for cooperation and competition within a framework of positive reinforcement and encouragement. Learning to be comfortable and cooperative in a competitive environment is a positive experience and adds to a child s development, in part because we live in a world where both competition and cooperation are components of everyday life. Competitive Program Objectives: To develop a competitive gymnastics program that maintains the participants level of interest, one which will also allow our gymnasts the opportunity to participate in collegiate and international gymnastics. To provide the opportunity for children to have a competitive gymnastics experience, realizing that not all children make a long-term commitment to the sport. To develop a positive self-concept by learning and improving new skills, as well as by achieving success in competition. To develop social skills among other children and adults. To learn how to work as part of a team. To be with friends and make new ones. To feel the excitement of competition, and to learn about managing success and disappointment. To learn about fair play and being a good sport, and learn respect for others. To succeed or win by doing your very best. To acquire an appreciation for an active lifestyle, to exercise, and to become physically fit.

Page 3 Welcome to Team Legacy Gymnastics Introduction: The decision to enter competitive gymnastics is an exciting yet challenging step in the life of your child. This team manual is designed to answer questions and explain the rules and policies for the Team Legacy program at Coach Patty s School of Gymnastics. Competitive gymnastics is a unique sport requiring the backing and support of the gymnast s family. Therefore, when selecting team gymnasts, we look closely at the team parents. This need not be a difficult or demanding task, only one that shows each family is interested in and committed to providing their child with a positive learning experience through the competitive aspect of gymnastics. Congratulations on taking the time to think through the obligations of team membership. Life changes to keep in mind: As your child progresses up the competitive ladder, the hours and days of workout will continue to build. You may have to change your schedule to the extent that you are available to drive your gymnast to practice and pick him or her up. There will be gymnastics meets that take up a number of weekends and even school days during competition season. With effective time management skills practiced by our team athletes, Homework will have to be done much more efficiently and with better study habits due to shorter periods of time available. (It has been the experience of most coaches that students who are involved in a team program such as gymnastics tend to have better grades and are better at managing study time than their peers.) The rest of this team manual will go over the various aspects of team participation. Please take the time to read this material and then set a time to discuss with the team coaches the goals and objectives of the team program and how they fit with your child s gymnastic goals. Then, discuss in a family meeting exactly what your child s goals are and if they can be achieved in this setting. Once a child has developed a taste for the sport of gymnastics (especially the competitive aspect), it is an addiction that will often grow and become a part of your child for life.

Lee Coltman Department Leader, Women Competitive Programs & Head Coach of the Artistic Team Vanessa Schmidtke Head Coach, XCEL Competitive Program Heath Marquiss Department Leader & Head Coach of of T-n-T Competitive and Developmental Program Andrew Kirk/Dan Connelly Department Leaders and Head Coaches of Boys Competitive team programs The team staff is composed of trained professional instructors with years of gymnastics coaching experience. We hold Professional Membership in several different coaching associations, as well as USA Gymnastics, the governing body for our sport. Additionally, all Team Legacy coaches are Safety Certified by USAG and regularly attend regional and national conferences to update their credentials, and attend training seminars on the latest trends and techniques in competitive gymnastics. Often, we consult with fellow colleagues at other gyms around the state and the country and also to exchange our knowledge with them. We take great pride in our proficiency and knowledge of this sport and ask that you respect our expertise. There are of course times when a parent or gymnast may disagree with our policies, rules or decisions. Please feel free to bring your questions and disagreements to the attention of the Department Leader or to the relevant administrator of your program. Be aware that we base our decisions on our professional experience and in the best interest of our overall team program. This means that nearly all decisions will also benefit your child. In addition, all decisions regarding the girls developmental and team program are the responsibility of the Head Coach of that program. Meetings with a Department Leader or head coach can be scheduled by calling the office during business hours (805-383-9450). Meetings with team coaches should be scheduled at a mutually agreed time outside of practice hours, typically just before or after practice.

Page 5 Competitive Gymnastics at Coach Patty s Gymnastics Coach Patty s Gymnastics offers training and sanctioned competition teams with age eligibility at the following levels: Women s Artistic and XCEL Program Xcel Program USAG Bronze USAG Silver - Gold USAG Platinum - Diamond Introductory Competitive Program Intermediate Competitive Program Advanced Competitive Program Artistic Program USAG Levels 2-5 USAG Level 6-8 USAG Level 9 thru Elite: Compulsory Program Novice/Intermediate Optional Program Advanced Optional program Artistic & XCEL Teams and Levels: Competitive Gymnastics is a sport that is judged at an individual level. In the novice and intermediate levels (USAG L2-L5) a fixed set of skills and routines are trained and performed by all athletes. These are the Compulsory competitive levels, ideal for acclimating the less-experienced gymnast to competition. As such, all routines start at 10 points and failures of technique, form, and skill performance are deducted accordingly. As an athlete progresses to Levels 6 through Elite (and in all XCEL levels), her skills and routines are chosen and choreographed independently by the gymnast and her coach, with progressively more difficult and complex elements required by the sanctioning organization. Optional levels are consequently judged on composition, content, and difficulty, as well as execution. At the top of this competitive progression are the Elites, from whose ranks Olympians and international competitors are selected. The routines performed at this level are scored first by adding up the number of Value Parts performed and then by deducting from that total. At these levels, it thus becomes increasingly important that all the required skills are mastered before competing.

Page 6 Trampoline & Tumbling Program USAG Level 4 USAG Level 5 USAG Level 6 USAG Level 7 USAG Level 8 USAG Level 9 USAG Level 10 International Elite: Compulsory Program Compulsory program Compulsory program Compulsory Program Intermediate optional Advanced Optional program Advanced Optional program Advanced Optional program Tumbling and Trampoline(T&T) Teams and Levels: In T&T, a combination of compulsory and optional routines is competed in these levels. Optional levels are consequently judged on composition, content, and difficulty, as well as execution. At the top of this competitive progression are the Elites, from whose ranks Olympians and international competitors are selected. Also in these levels routines are scored first by adding up the number of value parts performed, and then by deducting from that total (optional routines in the T&T program start at a base value of 30 points and then Degree of Difficulty points are added). At these levels it thus becomes increasingly important that all the required skills are mastered before competing at that level.

Page 7 Men s Competitive Program USAG Levels 4-6 USAG Level 7 Compulsory Program Novice Optional Program USAG Level 8 thru Elite: Advanced Optional program The Men s Junior Olympic Age Group Competition Program provides training and competitive opportunities for beginner to elite gymnasts from ages 5 to 18. The Junior Olympic Program is organized into 10 different levels of training and competition. Each level has multiple age groups and opportunities for participation and competition. Competition is carried out at the local, state, regional and national levels through USA Gymnastics sanctioned invitational meets and championship level meets. For Levels VIII, IX and X, the season culminates at the Men s Junior Olympic National Championships held in May of each year. For elite level athletes, the culminating event is the USA Gymnastics National Championships. The Junior Olympic Age Group Competition Program consists of seven levels. The first three levels, IV through VI, continue the BSAP's progressions from simple to more complex movements. The intermediate level, VII, encourages the transition from compulsory to optional routines at an appropriate age. These routines require a level of difficulty but instead of imposing the FIG combination requirements they require event specific skills. These skills provide logical bridges between the lower and higher level routines. The advanced levels, VIII, IX and X require the gymnast to fulfill most FIG requirements.

Page 8 Joining Team After evaluation, all new competitive gymnasts are able to enroll for a period of one month on a trial basis. They will then be re-evaluated at the end of the month for final acceptance. Evaluation and Placement: Each November/December, June, and August/September at the beginning of the competitive seasons the team coaches will evaluate each current and incoming team member to determine the proper competitive level for that gymnast. Athletes may be moved between groups/levels at any time that is deemed advantageous to future success. Parents will be notified prior to any change in your child s group/level. Changes may be made if the gymnast is showing rapid progress at a particular level or if he or she is struggling to keep up. These changes, like all placement decisions made by the coaches, are not open to negotiation. The Head Coach of your program will be available to answer questions about placement. Public comment about placement issues is unsportsmanlike for athletes and rude for parents and unacceptable at Coach Patty s Gymnastics. Competition can be a stressful experience for a child and it is vital that he or she feels confident and competent at the level in which she is competing. This is the guiding principle behind team placement at Coach Patty s. Typically, a gymnast will remain on the same competitive team throughout the season, culminating in competition at the State Meet for his or her level. Exceptions to this standard practice are extremely rare and will only be made after careful consideration by the coaching staff. Advancement in the Women s Artistic Program: In the USAG, qualifying scores must be attained in each competitive season in order for the gymnast to advance to the next level. Because these scores may change each year, and because they do not reflect a gymnast s preparation for the next level of competition, they are not the most important consideration in your child s advancement. In general, receiving a 36.00 or better at any level is considered evidence of competence, and the gymnast may thus consider themselves to have mastered their current level. Gymnast advancement, however, is neither automatic nor guaranteed by achieving a 36.00. The team coaches will determine a child s readiness to advance in level based upon a number of factors including strength, flexibility, attitude, fear factors, competitive history, their ability and willingness to learn, and, most especially, their readiness in terms of the required skills of the desired level. As your child advances through competitive levels, both the total hours of training and commensurate tuition/competition costs will increase. A schedule of costs associated with each competition level is available from the office. Unlike some other children s recreational activities, there is no automatic or mandatory advancement through all competitive levels. There may be a point at which your athlete is unable to attain the skills necessary to move to the next level. Because advancement is at the discretion of the coach and the Department Leader, a child may, and often will, compete at a certain level for more than one season.

Advancement in the T&T Competitive Program: In the USAG, qualifying scores must be attained in each competitive season in order for the gymnast to advance to the next level. Because these scores may change each year, and because they do not reflect a gymnast s preparation for the next level of competition, they are not the most important consideration in your child s advancement. In T&T, a gymnast can be a different level for each event. Base mobility scores are considered evidence of competence, and gymnasts may thus consider themselves to have mastered their current level. HOWEVER, gymnast advancement is neither automatic nor guaranteed by achieving a mobility score. The team coaches will determine a child s readiness to advance in level based upon a number of factors including strength, flexibility, attitude, fear factors, competitive history, their ability and willingness to learn, and, most especially, their readiness in terms of the required skills of the desired level. Page 9 Advancement in the Boys Program: In the USAG, qualifying scores must be attained in each competitive season in order for the gymnast to advance to the next level. Because these scores may change each year, and because they do not reflect a gymnast s preparation for the next level of competition, they are not the most important consideration in your child s advancement. The team coaches will determine a child s readiness to advance in level based upon a number of factors including strength, flexibility, attitude, fear factors, competitive history, their ability and willingness to learn, and, most especially, their readiness in terms of the required skills of the desired level. Page 10 Team Legacy Parents Guide Basic Expectations: Be supportive and loving of your athletes, and leave the coaching to the coaches. It can be confusing to get conflicting guidance, and demoralizing to get criticism from every corner. Support and respect Team Legacy coaching staff, and bring questions and issues to the head coach whenever they arise. Get your athletes to practices and meets on time. Gym Safety: Safety is the key issue in this sport, and is a primary concern of Team Legacy. Due to the high number of technical complexities in training, it is vital that all of us respect every aspect of safety. It is important that your child has a registration card with a signed medical release, up-to-date home and work telephone numbers, and home address on file in the office. Please abide by the following gym rules for the safety of all. You may watch your child at any time during practice from the designated viewing area at the entrance of the gym. Parents are not allowed on the floor or the equipment. Do not call out to your child or coach during practice. An interruption of concentration for athletes and coaches is dangerous. If you need to speak with your child s coach, please make an appointment or call during scheduled office hours. DO NOT go out into the training area without permission, this causes an unsafe environment and can seriously harm an athlete and/or yourself. Eating and drinking are not permitted in the main gym exercise area. Should an injury occur while you are viewing, please remain in the seating area. The entire staff at Team Legacy is First Aid and CPR trained. All of the Team Legacy team coaches are also safety certified though a national USAG program. If additional help is needed, coaches will approach you. Insurance: Coach Patty s Gymnastics has secondary insurance coverage for athletes. USAG provides coverage when there is an injury at practices and sanctioned meets. Private Lessons: If there are particular skills your child wants to work on, private lessons may be arranged with the coaches. In any case, your athlete s primary coach must approve all private lessons, so the coach knows what the athlete is working on in privates. Fees will vary, depending on the coach. Problem Solving: If a problem arises with a particular coach, talk with that coach first to try to resolve it. (Please do not discuss the issue with everyone else -- it is between you and the coach.) If it can't be resolved between the two of you, please bring the issue to the attention of the head coach.

Page 11 Tuition and Fees Coach Patty s School of Gymnastics, is a privately owned club and is completely self-funded. Coach Patty Gymnastics or Team Legacy does not receive any public, private or governmental funding. Funding is generated from fees collected from its members, tuition, annual administrative (Membership dues), and also from hosting in-house competitions. Acceptance and placement on Team Legacy requires a full year commitment from each family. Payment of monthly tuition is due on or before the 1 st of each month and is subject to a late fee after the 1st. Tuition: Each team program operates on an annual budget. This operating budget is based on the following expenses. Coaches expense: 1. Salaries. 2. Education & training. 3. Professional memberships. 4. Travel expenses. 5. Compensation for team events. 6. Any additional expenses related to team coaching. Facility & Equipment: 1. Purchasing of New Equipment 2. Depreciation and Maintenance of Existing equipment. 3. Facility Rent and Maintenance. 4. Any other facility or equipment expenses necessary for team programs. These expenses are the foundation of team tuition calculation. Coach Patty s Gymnastics actively works to keep all costs down without sacrificing quality of staff, equipment or any services required to keep a professional and efficient experience. Mid Season Enrollment: Each team season begin on the first day of the following month after team programs culminating competition. Any new team members will be required to pay a team assessment fee of $50.00 for each month from the beginning of the season until month of enrollment to catchup of missed team assessment fee s for season. Multi team members within single Family: Tuition discounts may be applied for families with more than one child in our program and should appear on your statement. Standard discount is 10% off tuition for first sibling. Please check with the office manager for the exact amount of your discount. Vacation: Full tuition is still required even if athlete leaves on vacation for any period of time.

Page 12 Injuries: An injured gymnast should attend practice as scheduled in order to maintain conditioning unless prohibited by a physician and discussed with the relevant head coach. Injured team members who are conditioning are responsible for the full monthly tuition. A gymnast, who is unable to condition, as directed by their physician, may pay half monthly tuition to hold her spot on the team until they are able to return to regular practices or conditioning. Competition Entry Fees: Competition entry fees are determined by the hosting gym or organization managing the meet. In addition to every athlete entry fee, there may be a team entry fee as well, the cost of which all athletes competing at that team level are required to share. These fee s are charged to participating athlete member accounts, and must be paid in full in order to compete. Additional Competitions: From time to time we may decide to add an additional competition, training camp, or special function for athletes to participate. In this case we may require additional team assessment for coaches expenses and compensation and would be distributed equally with all participating families. All team coaches receive compensation for participation in a specific event. Normally these fees are included within your monthly tuition and are not contingent upon athlete competing. However with a non scheduled event a per diem for coaches will be calculated to reimburse expenses and compensation for coaches that are participating in specific event. In this case the total compensation or reimbursement will be equally divided in addition to competition entry fee with each participating athlete. As with any tuition these fee s they are non-refundable. Out of Session Requests: Meet schedules are generally posted 1 week prior to competition. If your athlete has a scheduling conflict due to religious reasons, you may request to compete at a different time. Competing off schedule is at the discretion of the Meet Director and may be refused without refund. If granted and if coach is available at the agreed upon time, additional fee s may be required to compensate for coaches expenses and compensation. Scores received by athletes not competing at the time originally scheduled can only be used for mobility, not for awards. Custom Music & Choreography: Optional Level and Xcel Gold gymnasts are required to have individual music and choreography for floor exercise and choreography for balance beam. Music choices and choreography are decided by the coaching staff with the goal of maximizing the success of the routine. Music will usually be cut by the head coach in order to insure a truly unique optional experience for your daughter. Fees for cutting music average $50 and are based on the time necessary to complete editing, arrangement, and additional composition. Optional routines for floor and beam may be composed either by our coaches or by outside choreographers brought to the gym at the head coach s discretion. Choreography sessions are typically held outside of regular practice times and at a rate agreed upon between the choreographer and the parent. Payment for choreography services is due at the time services are rendered. Please refer to current team pricing schedule. Private Lessons: Private lessons are a great way to for student athletes to learn new skills outside of the normal training schedule, Please refer to Appendix for details.

Team Legacy Hosted Competitions and Functions: Page 13 All parents are required to participate in events hosted by the gym. Tasks include: set-up and tear down, session assignments, and other duties assigned by the meet Department Leader. Each parent must participate in either a Setup or Teardown and one Session for each meet hosted at Coach Patty Gymnastics. We understand at times you may not be able to or wish to fulfill competition obligations, in this case you do have a couple of options, this must be arranged prior to the competition date. 1. Find an adult that will fulfill this obligation on your behalf. 2. Hire a coach from the gym to participate on your behalf. 3. Trade with another team family. If you for whatever reason did not sign up or utilized one of the two options as suggested, or failed to show up for scheduled work session. A fee of $100.00 per session and/or Setup/ Teardown penalty will be assessed on account. Failure to pay this fee will result in athlete not being able to compete in any upcoming event and may result in removal from team program.

Page 14 Team Practice and Competition: Practice schedules are handed out and posted quarterly and vary only according to academic sessions and gymnastics calendars. Team practice attendance is mandatory. Please pay special attention to the practice schedules for your child. Gymnasts competing at Level 4 or higher should not miss practice for any extended period of time during their competitive season, except in the case of injury or illness. The competition seasons are as follows: Artistic Competition Schedule: USAG Level 2-5: Fall Season: August December Spring Season: January - June USAG Level 6-10: Winter/Spring: December May USAG Xcel All levels: Spring Season: January - May T&T Competition Schedule: USAG Level 5-7: Mobility competitions State Championships November-May USAG Level 8-10: Mobility competitions National Championships November-July Boys Competition Schedule: USAG Level IV-X: Winter/Spring: December May NOTE: All gymnasts are required to compete in all scheduled meets, unless otherwise determined by the Department Leader of the program! There are no exceptions! A Team Legacy athlete must attend all of the regular scheduled practices during the week before a competition in order to compete at the meet. This is to assure the gymnast s safety. An athlete who has been sick, injured or otherwise unable to work out during the week prior to a competition will not be physically or mentally prepared to handle the stress and demands of a competitive situation. In very rare circumstances, the head coach may permit exceptions to this rule at his or her discretion.

Page 15 Team Gymnast Rules Gymnasts must attend all scheduled practice sessions. Parents must notify the gym whenever a practice will be missed. Extended absence from practice will require a parent conference to resolve the problem. Gymnasts are expected to be on time for practice. If you cannot arrive at the scheduled practice time, please notify your child s coach. All competitive gymnasts must demonstrate proficiency in all skills appropriate to their competitive level to be allowed to enter any competition. In addition, the gymnast must be in good health and have attended every workout the week prior to all competitions. Special situations should be discussed with the head coach well in advance of the competition. No one is allowed on the gymnastics equipment unless accompanied or directed by her coach. No exceptions. Jewelry (except stud earrings) is not to be worn at practice. Gum chewing is not allowed during practice. Appropriate gymnastics attire a leotard is required for all workouts must be worn by the gymnast in order to be allowed to participate. Long hair should be neatly tied back. Believe it or not, un-gathered hair prevents gymnasts learning some of the most basic and important drills and skills in the sport. Improper language, flippant behavior, excessive socializing or poor attitudes are not allowed in the gym. Continued behavior after a warning will result in suspension from practice for that day. Coaches should be regarded with respect. Gymnasts showing disrespect toward their coach may be suspended and excused from practice. Socializing should only be done during scheduled breaks or before and after practice. Respect all other gymnasts and students in the gym. Gymnasts must be picked up on time at the end of their practice. Coaches and athletes may not transport any athlete at anytime while athlete is a member of the gym. Coaches and athletes may not text, send email, or any social messaging without c.c. parent on every message or transmission.

Competition Rules for Parents and Gymnasts Page 16 The competitive schedule will be set by the Head Coach and team staff. The head coach and team staff will determine which gymnasts are eligible to compete. Gymnasts must arrive at the meet site at least 30 minutes prior to the scheduled open warm-up time (T&T scheduled times do not include stretch time). Late gymnasts are more likely to score poorly due to insufficient warm-up and excess stress. Gymnasts must be dressed in their warm-ups, or competitive leotard with trunks, with their warm-up jacket and pants, and must remain in this attire for awards. All gymnasts are required to wear official team attire to all sanctioned events, including leotard and warm-ups. These items are to be ordered through the owner, Coach Patty. Sizing and normal leotard orders are done in September, and the gym offers a re-sale and swap program for our athletes. Gymnasts appearance must be neat, without jewelry or nail polish, their hair must be tied back, and girl s hair must be tied back into a bun per gym policy. T-n-T gymnasts cannot use bobby pins. Hair must be gelled or hair-sprayed for a clean appearance. Boy s hair cannot fall into their eyes or touch their necks.. Gymnasts must remain with their team and coach from the start of timed warm-ups until the end of competition. Parents are not allowed to communicate with gymnasts during the meet. Spectators are never allowed on the competition floor. In case of injury during warm-up or competition, YOU MUST stay in the spectator area until your coach brings you onto the floor. All eligible gymnasts on each team will be entered in each meet unless special circumstances are discussed with the coach in advance. Gymnasts and family members are expected to show sportsman-like conduct at all times during competition. Failure to do so may result in the child being scratched from the meet. Gymnasts may not leave the competition floor until the coach has given permission. NO FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY is permitted during a meet. The sudden flash of light could cause a gymnast to be injured. Check out your camera in advance. Many cameras come with an automatic flash that will activate if it detects low light levels.
