Each 4-H er will be interviewed and should exhibit good manners, a friendly personality and be at ease with the judges. You will be scored on posture, poise, manners, ability to converse with adults and overall appearance. Refreshments will be provided by the Vermilion Volunteers for Family and Community, Inc. These state awards are presented to 4-H ers in recognition of outstanding leadership and community service. Key Club applicants must be 16 years old by January 1, 2013. Award of Excellence applicants must be less than 14 years old as of January 1, 2013. A simple one page application form must be completed and submitted to the parish office by 4:30 p.m. on January 11, 2013. Applications may be picked up at the 4-H Office at 1105 W. Port Street in Abbeville or from your school s 4-H leader. A 4-H er may only win each award one time. Awards will be presented at 4-H Achievement Day on March 16 th. Recognition for Graduates Honor Cords! In an effort to recognize 4-H members who are graduating, Louisiana 4-H will offer a special 4-H Honor Cord. For 4-H youth to receive the 4-H Honor Cord they must meet the following requirements: Must be an enrolled 4-H member in good standing Must be a graduating senior Must have been enrolled in 4-H for 3 years of their high school career Must have participated in at least one state sponsored 4-H program in the last 3 years Must fill out the application form and turn in to their parish office by the deadline date All forms are due to the 4-H Office by January 11, 2013. Page 2 Engineering Day Contests - Tractor, Compact Tractor and ATV The best drivers in the parish will be determined at the 4-H Engineering Contest to be held at the 4-H Office on Tuesday, November 20, 2012 at 9:30 a.m. This contest is open to any 4-H club member who is at least 13 years old for tractor, compact tractor and ATV. If you would like more information on this contest, call Mr. Hilton at 898-4335. Tractor and Compact Tractor Contests are 4-H University qualifying contests for 9-12th grade members. In the ATV Contest, 8-12th graders can qualify. Parish Clothing Contest & Dress Revue Reminder - the Parish Clothing Contest and Dress Revue will be held in November. Garments are due at the 4-H Office on November 8 and appearance will be judged on Thursday, November 15, at 5:00 p.m. at Abbeville High School. Complete rules can be found in the October issue of Vermilion Cracklins. 4-H Junior Leader Po-Boy Sale Would you like something different to eat for lunch or supper? The Vermilion 4-H Jr. Leader Club has what you are looking for. The club is having a ham and cheese po-boy sale on Nov. 20. The meal will include a po-boy, chips and a dessert for $5.00 each. You must pre-order your po-boys and Jr. Leader club members will deliver them to your home or place of business. Junior Leader members will be contacting businesses and individuals for advance order placement. Orders are to be turned in to the 4-H office by November 15, so please place your order early. 4-H FUNdamentals Workshop Demonstrations, speeches and portfolios.oh my! Have you ever felt like you should have been more prepared to participate in Demonstration Day or Portfolio contests? If you answered yes, you don t want to miss our new learning opportunity. Come to our 4-H FUNdamentals Workshop on December 15 and learn the basics of preparing and presenting a speech or demo. You will get lots of ideas and examples to help you participate in Demonstration Day. In addition, 4-5 th graders will participate in a Healthy Snacks workshop while 6 th 12 th graders will learn how to tackle the Portfolio record keeping system. Participants will see examples of high quality portfolios and learn tips of simple record keeping. The $5.00 registration fee will cover the cost of food and supplies and all members will take home helpful information. Register by: December 1, 2012. All pets must be live, breathing animals 3. There will be five classes. CATS: a. Must be leashed or caged b. Will be judged on cleanliness, grooming, and conformation MARINE: a. Must be restrained in an aquarium, cage, etc. b. This class will include fish, shellfish, reptiles, and amphibians MISCELLANEOUS: a. Any pet not fitting into any of the previous categories will be placed in this category b. The criteria for judging will be decided upon by the judges once the variety of the exhibits in the class has been viewed MOST UNUSUAL PET: a. All species will be judged in one class b. Dogs are not allowed in this competition c. Judging criteria will be based upon the variety of exhibits in the class d. Entries in this class must have been shown in one of the first three classes in the Pet Show Division BEST DRESSED PET: a. All species will be judged in one class b. The criteria for judging will be based on final appearance and creativity c. Entries in this class must have been shown in one of the first three classes (cat, marine, or miscellaneous) d. Exhibitors must be a Vermilion 4-H er, but it is not necessary to be enrolled in the dog project. 2. All dogs must be on a leash while at the show. 3. All dogs must be well behaved (no biting, excessive barking or lunging at people) and under control at all times. Disruptive dogs will be disqualified and removed from the building. 4. All dogs must be either owned by or cared for by the exhibitor. 5. An exhibitor may show one or more dogs, but can enter each class only once. 6. Only dogs in good health may participate. Sick dogs or dogs with skin disorders may not participate. Proof of rabies vaccination (tags or certificate) must be shown at registration. 7. Any form of abuse applied to a dog may lead to disqualification. 8. Exhibitors will be responsible for cleaning up after their pets. 9. Ribbons will be given to the first five places in each class and in each division (4-6; 7-8; 9-12). 10. Port St., Abbeville REGISTRATION 12:30-1:00 p.m. BIKE RODEO 1:00 p.m. The Bike Rodeo is open to any Vermilion Parish 4-H club member. A participant must compete in all obstacles to be eligible for a ribbon. It is suggested that you bring your own bike. The events are listed and explained below. Set them up at home and practice them for best results. Ribbons will be given to the champion in each division. Divisions will be: 4-5th, 6th, 7-8th, and 9-12th grades. Events are as follows: INTERSECTION - Each contestant will enter the 12 inch lane, make a right turn and stop. Scoring: One demerit each time a wheel touches any boundary lines. Five demerits for failing to give proper hand signals when turning and stopping. One demerit for each inch away from stop line.

4-H Bike Rodeo Rules(continued) FIGURE EIGHT STEERING - The rider takes a moving start and makes 3 complete figure eights within the lane. Scoring: Two demerits each time foot touches ground. Three demerits each time tire touches any border line. Ten demerits for breaking pattern. STRAIGHT-LINE From a riding start, the rider travels the entire length of the line with both tires touching the line at all times. Scoring: One demerit each time a tire leaves the line. Two demerits if foot touches ground. Five demerits for stopping. Page 5 DOUBLE OBSTACLE From a riding start, the rider maneuvers slowly, between the pairs of obstacles. When the rider has gone the entire distance, he or she turns and repeats the ride in the opposite direction. Scoring: Two demerits each time foot touches ground. Two demerits each time tire touches obstacle. Ten demerits for not passing between every pair. TURNING AROUND The rider follows the pattern in the diagram giving proper turn signals for each turn. Scoring: Two demerits each time foot touches ground. Five demerits for failing to give signal or for giving improper signals. Three demerits for touching border line with tires. Ten demerits for breaking pattern. DOUBLE ZIG-ZAG OBSTACLE From a riding start, the cyclist zig-zags between the pairs of obstacles. When the rider has traveled the entire distance, he or she turns and repeats the ride in the opposite direction. Scoring: Two demerits for touching foot to ground. Two demerits each time a tire touches an obstacle. Ten demerits for not passing between every pair.

Page 6 4-H Bike Rodeo Rules (continued) Louisiana bicycling laws can be found online at http:// brgov/dept/planning/bike/lalaw.htm. Below are a few of the laws related to bicycling. Traffic hand signals to be used by cyclists on Louisiana roads can be found to the right. These hand signals should be used during the competition at the Bike Rodeo on November 19. With regard to any bicycle used on a public roadway, public bicycle path, or other public right-of-way, no parent, guardian, or person with legal responsibility for the safety and welfare of a child shall knowingly allow any of the following: - Such child under the age of twelve to operate or ride as a passenger on a bicycle without wearing an approved helmet of good fit fastened securely upon the head with the straps of the helmet. - Such child who weighs less than forty pounds or is less than forty inches in height to be a passenger on a bicycle without being properly seated in and adequately secured to a restraining seat. Electric Clinic Wednesday December 19, 2012 6:00 p.m. Building, Abbeville All 4-H Club members are invited to attend the 24 th Annual Vermilion Parish 4-H Electric Clinic. 4-H Club members will hear talks on electricity and be taught the basics of wiring. This year s projects will be either a heavy duty extension cord or a lamp kit. Cost will be $15.00 for a 15 ft. cord. You should bring a phillips-head screwdriver. The lamps cost $12.00 and you will need to bring a sharp pocket knife, screw driver, and an empty soft drink can. The Rice and Sugar Cookery Contest will be held on Monday, November 19,at the 4-H Office in Abbeville. Rice and Sugar Cookery Contest The Rice and Sugar Cookery Contest will be held on Monday, November 19 at the 4-H Office in Abbeville. Registration of the dishes will be from 9:00-9:30 a.m., judging will begin at 9:45 a.m. and dishes will be released at 12:00 p.m. Contestants must be a current 4-H member. For Food Safety Concerns, after preparation, the food entry must be chilled to refrigerator temperature. Dishes must be transported on ice, in an ice chest to the contest. Even dishes that are not normally refrigerated, (cakes, cookies, etc.) must be turned in cold. Dishes not chilled and transported in this manner will not be eligible to place 1st. No recipe containing raw eggs will be accepted. The dish can be exhibited in a normal-sized serving container, not to exceed 18, to allow adequate space for all entries. An option this year is to submit only 4-6 servings, rather than the entire dish. No placemats, flower arrangements, or additional decorative items will be allowed. First Place in each category will be eligible to compete in the District Cookery Contest on April 24, 2013. RICE COOKERY Categories: Rice Main Dish Rice Side Dish Rice Dessert General Requirements Bring a prepared rice dish to the contest. The dish must contain at least one (1) cup of cooked rice. Wild rice is not a cultivated rice in Louisiana and does not meet the requirement of 1 cup rice. Dishes containing rice products, such as rice cereal, rice flour, etc. must also contain cooked rice. Example: Traditional rice krispie treats do not meet the contest requirements. Bring one copy of the recipe to the contest. The recipe must contain the name of the dish, how much rice it contains, and clear preparation instructions. ON BACK of recipe - please print child s name, school and grade. NEW THIS YEAR! Contestants may enter the entire dish OR 4-6 servings SUGAR COOKERY Categories: Vermilion Cracklins Baked items (breads, cakes, pies, cookies, etc.) Non-baked - no part of the dessert can be baked (candies, icebox pies, ice cream, etc.) This DOES NOT INCLUDE homemade jams, jellies, preserves, etc. General Requirements: Bring a prepared dish to the contest. Recipe must contain at least one cup of sugar in any form (brown, white or powdered sugar are acceptable). There can be NO RAW EGGS in the final product. Bring one copy of the recipe to the contest. The recipe must contain the name of the dish, how much sugar it contains, and clear preparation instructions. ON BACK of recipe - please print child s name, school and grade. NEW THIS YEAR! Your body is very smart. It lets you know that you need food by making you feel hungry. You know that you are hungry when you hear your stomach growling or you are low on energy. Your body also lets you know when it has had enough. You may realize that you are not hungry anymore or you feel more energetic. Paying attention to your body is the best way to know when to eat and when to stop. The Jr. Leader Club will sponsor a free pizza party for the club that donates the most pounds of food for the drive. Work with your club leader to organize your club s effort.
