Sample Data Appendix #1 Franco Palmer (Fall 2006) Data Appendix The API Score discussed earlier is the variable that was explained. This measures the overall average Standard Testing and Reporting scores for each school and is readily available 2-3 months after the students are tested in May. School enrollment is an independent variable in the equation. The number of students enrolled at schools during the spring 2004 STAR test measures the enrollment. Teacher experience is an independent variable in the equation. Its unit of measurement is the average number of years teaching experience at each school. The primary data source is the school district and county. The pupil-teacher ratio is an independent variable. It is the number of students enrolled in the school divided by the number of certificated teachers in the school. The percent of students in each school that received free or reduced lunch was the variable for a measurement of socioeconomic status (parents income and poverty status). It was measured as a percentage of the total enrollment at each school. The percent of students that are minorities is an independent variable. This data was derived from the total enrollment (100%) less the percent students that are white (not Hispanic). The percentage represents the Hispanic, Asian, African American, Pacific Islander, and Native Indian population at the schools. This raw data for all ethnicities were available but I used the percent white in each school to find the percentage minority in each school. Percent minority

was computed by using total number of students enrolled minus total number of whites enrolled divided by total enrolled. The parental education attainment is the last variable. It was measured by a survey at the time the students took the STAR test. The variable measures the percentage of student s parents that did not graduate high school. This percentage shows what portion of the parents of each school graduated high school or not.
