JTAS SPORT 2016 is a year filled with excitement and energy due to our acceptance in the Junior TAS Competition. This competition allows us to participate in Saturday morning fixtures in Year 4 Year 6 against the following schools :- Ormiston College, John Paul College, Faith Lutheran College Redlands, St Paul s School, Redeemer Lutheran College, The Springfield Anglican College, Rivermount College, Cannon Hill Anglican College, West Moreton Anglican College, St John s Anglican College and Canterbury College. Due to this change I have been appointed as Primary Head of Sport and I am very enthusiastic about creating meaningful programs to assist our students in developing their skills and gameplay across the sports offered. The sports offered are: Term 1 - Cricket and Hockey Term 2 - Rugby Union and Netball Term 3 - Basketball and Soccer Term 4 AFL, Tennis and Touch Football Currently our students are in the middle of a very busy Cricket and Hockey season. We have over 70 players committed to Saturday sport and the numbers are growing each week. The students are so excited to be playing with their school friends against other schools (especially when they beat them).

Training for JTAS occurs every Wednesday and we will soon be asking for the students availability for Rugby Union and Netball in Term 2. If you have any questions please feel free to email, phone or come and see Mrs Rilen or myself in the Sports Office. We are the ones who are always smiling! Tom D Arcy and Mela Gillard narrowly missed finals - both were first reserve for their 100m freestyle events. Mela secured a qualifying time for the 100m freestyle for the Australian Age National Championships at the end of March. Annabel White also achieved a qualifying time for this competition with a considerable PB in her 100m butterfly.

Of the 26 swims contested by team members during the meet, 18 were PB s a 70% PB rate is pretty good, especially considering one team member was swimming with an injury and another battling an illness. The team prepared well for this meet over the previous four months and raced solidly throughout the competition. Congratulations to all those who raced and to those who trained throughout the Christmas holidays. Another great achievement from a new student to Sheldon College and a member of the Sheldon Swimming Academy, Bridie Nielsen (8A) placed 19th in the 13 years girls 5km swim at the Australian Open Water Championships last Saturday, February 13. Great effort Bridie! Alex Jordan Head Swim Coach JTAS RESULTS Cricket Sheldon Heat v JPC A successful first round of JTAS cricket for the Under 10s Heat taking the victory over JPC. Player of the Match was awarded to Will for his awesome catch of the day. Will is new to Sheldon College and showed his team mates his cricket skills that were developed during his years at an Australian School in Singapore.

Sheldon Stars 3/66 defeated Ormiston College 7/50 Sheldon Stars 5/53 lost to Ipswich Grammar 3/76 Sheldon Thunder v Canterbury College The first away match for the Sheldon Thunder bought out the best for the team with a spirited improvement from the first week. It appears batting first suits the Thunder and they were up for the challenge with no loss of wicket until the 9th over. As a team they concentrated on protecting their wickets and there was a massive improvement on running between wickets. Good contributions from all pairs in the batting and some combinations forming. Josh and Mitch 0/15 Lily and Lachlan 0/15 Fletcher and Thomas 2/13 Kelsey and Jet 1/7 Reece and Canterbury Fill in 0/20 Total 3/70 Overall they protected their wickets well. When fielding the Thunder were keen and had good support and talk which was a little inspiring. Some good fielding and great team work in run outs put the Thunder in the box seat. Wides were reduced from 44 to 38 this week but still room for improvement with accuracy and bowling practice. The Thunder bowled 2 overs before rain stopped play. The Thunder were in the box seat and a number of players were concerned that a no result would be called and one Thunder player noted would the Duckworth Lewis System be utilised. No need as the rain subsided and an eager Thunder fielding team was able to get back to work. (Good to see how keen they were). Canterbury Pair 1 2/7 3 overs (Bowlers Fletcher, Josh and Mitch) Pair 2 3/9 3 overs (Thomas, Reece and Kelsey) Pair 3 0/12 3 overs (Lily, Lachlan and Fletcher) Pair 4 0/9 3 Overs (Josh, Mitch and Thomas) Pair 5 0/18 4 Overs (Reece, Kelsey, Lily and Lachlan) Pair 6 0/10 4 Overs (Jet 2 overs, Josh and Mitch) Total 5 / 65 Hockey Sheldon Kookaburras 6 vs CHAC 2 This was an historic occasion - the first ever JTAS Sheldon College hockey match. All 11 players gave of their very best, and played some outstanding hockey. The scores in each third read: 0-2, 1-2 and 1-2 respectively which underlined our improvement as the match wore on. Considering that our opponents, CHAC, had played before and had many experienced players, we can be even more proud of our efforts. Gemma Hooper had the distinction of scoring the first goal and also won the wristband for Player of the Match. Jacob Spicer scored the 2nd and was a solid performer all game. Rhys Swanson won the bumper sticker for most improved player whilst Lara Zambelli and Noah Kubenk were excellent wherever they played on the field.

We look forward to Wednesday's training session and the next match on Saturday. Sheldon Kookaburras 1 v West Mac 7 Our second match of the season saw us take on the might of WMAC. The earlier pushback time saw us make the most of the cooler temperatures and we began with a bang, drawing the opening third 1-1. The goal came from Liam Smith, after great build-up play from Man of the Match, Noah Kubenk. As the match wore on, WMAC became more powerful and our defensive players Nikita Spicer and Caelyn Britz did well to stem the tide of attacks. The final score was 7-1 but the team never gave up and kept fighting until the end. Well done! Sheldon Wallabies 19 vs Springfield Anglican 6 Sheldon Wallabies had a blinder of a game to start the season. All players had a fantastic time and used their skills to move the ball from deep in deference through to the attacking third. We can't wait to play again next week!! Sheldon Wallabies 11 vs West Mac 3 Another great win this weekend by the Sheldon Wallabies. Excellent defence by the team and also some beautiful passages of play lead to a convincing win against West Mac. Sheldon Hockeyroos 2 v 6 On Saturday morning the Hockeyroos played their first ever hockey game! With eagerness and enthusiasm they took to the field and very quickly were passing the ball to each other in attack and defending their goal tirelessly. Callum Lamb and Coby McGill showed strength in attack with Callum scoring two goals and being awarded Player of the Match. In defence, Luke Covill and William Reece-Anderson showed determination to keep the opposition from scoring. Although we lost 6-2, the Hockeyroos all left the field smiling and eager to take on next week's team! Hockeyroos 6 v 2 On Saturday morning the Hockeyroos played their first ever hockey game!
