BRIGHTON TABLE TENNIS CLUB Brighton Table Tennis Club (BTTC) exists as a diverse community in structured activity to promote health, tolerance and achievement. BTTC was founded in 2007 with the specific aim of using Table Tennis as a tool to engage children and young people living in the most deprived parts of the City and provide them with opportunities to reach their potential. In addition to programmes aimed at children and young people we now also have a broader remit to address social exclusion and marginalization among adults in the community. We do this by running sessions for adults with learning disabilities, refugees, traveller and LGBT groups, as well as providing voluntary work to ex offenders and those with a history of substance abuse. BTTC now has over 1000 people playing Table Tennis a week at its sessions across the city. BTTC s learning disability program has grown to include more than 70 players a week at the club over two sessions. Harry Fairchild made his mark in 2016 by becoming the first Table Tennis coach in world with Down s Syndrome (T21), winning the UK National Championships and a bronze medal at the Trisome Games (Down s Syndrome Olympics) in Florence, Italy. Chris O Flinn & Andrew Tonkin are now also working towards becoming Level 1 qualified coaches in 2017. They add huge value to the club in their work with primary school children and other young adults with learning disabilities. BTTC would encourage any other community sports club to open its doors, embrace and celebrate disability. With a newly refurbished, fully accessible new venue, BTTC plans to now begin sessions targeting players with physical disabilities and in wheelchairs. If any players at the British Para Table Tennis National Championships would like to visit then please get in touch! www.brightontabletennisclub.com The Butterfly Michael Hawkesworth Championships 2017 Chairman s Welcome On behalf of the British Para Table Tennis Association. I am pleased to welcome all players, coaches, officials and spectators to the National Championships to be held at Grantham Meres Leisure Centre. My thanks to Dave Cochrane the Competition Chairman, Steve Welch once again as our Referee with Margaret Welch assisting at top table. We at BPTT would also extend a very big thank you to the tournament officials and volunteers, some of whom are also associate members, for giving up their time to assist in the smooth running of these championships and to those who are also associate members thank you for your support. We are again delighted to welcome Butterfly and Tees Sport as the BPTT official suppliers of clothing and equipment to our World Class Performance Squad. Under the terms of that agreement, Butterfly and Tees Sport are supplying the equipment at this event and arranging a sales stand where competitors and spectators can purchase table tennis equipment and clothing. What a fantastic Paralympic year we had in 2016 our GB Squad did us all proud in Rio it was a privilege to be part of the British Para delegation. Congratulations to all the medalists and especially to Will Bayley and Rob Davies on winning Gold Medals and featuring in the New Year s Honours List being awarded MBEs; and to Aaron McKibbin and Ross Wilson along with Will, who took bronze in the men s class 6-8 team event The GB Para Table Tennis Performance Director, coaches, support staff and EIS staff have been very dedicated. Table Tennis has received great coverage in the media as a result of the performances in Rio and hopefully this will inspire new talent. I would also like to record our grateful thanks to UK Sport for their ongoing support to us in Governance re-structuring and training; supporting World Class Performance GB Squad in attending meetings and events. On a sad note we need to spare a thought for Paul Davies on the sudden death of Deborah after Rio, she will be missed by us all and was always a great support to all the athletes in the team. We are now well underway with planning for Tokyo cycle and beyond with UK Sport and agreeing a new Code of Governance Action Plan. The Board restructured the Organisation and are working on the new branding of BPTT focusing on what players can do not the disability. Mike Smith as Company Secretary has worked tirelessly with staff and Board to get us to this point. I would like to thank the new Membership Services Committee chaired by Shaun Newcomb for their various contributions during the year. and Roger Hales for chairing the Performance Monitoring Group. A special thank you to the staff at Table Tennis England who operate WCP finances and HR under SLA Wishing you a very successful and enjoyable weekend sorry I cannot be present due to the date change. Karen Tonge MBE Chairman, BPTT

HALTON TABLE TENNIS CLUB Halton Table tennis Club which first opened its doors in 1999 was the first Table tennis Club to achieve the new ClubMark awarded to clubs by Sport England. Clubmark is the universally acknowledged cross sport accreditation scheme for community sports clubs. It shows that a club provides the right environment to ensure the welfare of its members and encourages everyone to enjoy sport and stay involved throughout their lives. Some of Halton s members are part of the GB Para Squad and Futures Squad. They have won various titles at Para TT, TT Transplant and Learning Disability events. Last year the club was very proud when Jack Hunter-Spivey, Class 5 played in his first Paralympics Games in Rio. He contracted TB in his hip at the age of 4 years old. He remained in hospital from when it was first diagnosed, until the age of 13. The illness resulted in Michael having one leg four inches shorter than the other. Michael attended Roundhay Grammar School and it was whilst here he became interested in table tennis, this resulted in him playing in tournaments in the Leeds area and winning numerous cups and shields. Besides his academic development he had a keen interest in all sports for which his disability proved to be no obstacle. He enjoyed canoeing and motor racing and was competitive in all he did. His enthusiasm for table tennis remained with him into later life. After his school days, he studied Physics at Leeds University before completing his PhD at the University of Birmingham. He later lectured in Nuclear Physics at Birmingham where he completed his career. Much of his research work involved Health Physics. Unfortunately, he died of cancer in 2005 but he had a very strong wish to ensure that any disabled individual who participated in either table tennis or canoeing should benefit from his desire to promote these sports. Hence the sponsorship of the BTTAD National Championship over the last 11 years.
