SONS OF CONFEDERATE VETERANS-MECHANIZED CAVALRY October - December 2014 Picture 1. On October 4, 2014 the SCV Mechanized Cavalry 3rd Battalion Companies of Georgia and Florida met at Andersonville to participate in the parade. There were a total of fifteen motorcycles and the Mechanized Cavalry trailer that was brought up from Florida for the parade. The monument in the background was erected to honor the commandant of Camp Sumter or Andersonville prison as it has been called, Major Henry Wirz. Andersonville Prison held approximately 45,000 Federal prisoners between 1864 and 1865 where 13,000 of them died. The Camp stood just east of Andersonville in the Southwest corner of Macon County, Georgia. As well as the former prison, the site also contains the Andersonville National Cemetery and the National Prisoner of War Museum. The site is an iconic reminder of the horrors of Civil War prisons. It was commanded by Major Henry Wirz, who was tried and executed after the war for murder. It was overcrowded to four times its capacity, with inadequate water supply, reduction in food rations, and unsanitary conditions.

Mark Hall Kudos to the men and ladies of Gaston County for a job well done! I love it when a plan comes together! Mechanzied Cavalry Christmas is ready to roll! Thanks to all the hard working volunteers! Mary Ann Montgomery Forrest Chapter #53 OCR and NB Forrest Camp #803 as well as SCV Mechanized Cavalry all want to thank y all! After the event was over we had some items left and we made good use of it. For example here is a well packed (thanks to One Eye) full truckload of toys and one brand new bicycle being donated to the Lee County Toys for Tots! Right before that we stopped by a local Club s place and donated several cases of toys So proud to be a part of the SCV-Mech Cav. Today in NC 1st and 2nd Platoons help put on a Mech Cav Christmas, providing for the needy of Lee and Chatham counties. The 3rd and 5th Plattons were providing toys and distributing coats and boots for the children of Gaston and surrounding counties. The 4th Platoon was working with the churches of Asheville providing for the needy and homeless. It is activities like these that emulate the character of our ancestors, today we made them proud!!!! Our final contribution for the weekend was CBA toy run in Randolph County for the mill s Childens Home in Thomasville, NC where One Eye took a bunch of toys, Bibles, & clothes to donate so overall we helped Lee, Chatham, Harnett, & Randolph counties in 2 days plus the Bibles and Blankets that we are still giving to Churches and charities this week!
