SONS OF CONFEDERATE VETERANS-MECHANIZED CAVALRY October - December 2014 Picture 1. On October 4, 2014 the SCV Mechanized Cavalry 3rd Battalion Companies of Georgia and Florida met at Andersonville to participate in the parade. There were a total of fifteen motorcycles and the Mechanized Cavalry trailer that was brought up from Florida for the parade. The monument in the background was erected to honor the commandant of Camp Sumter or Andersonville prison as it has been called, Major Henry Wirz. Andersonville Prison held approximately 45,000 Federal prisoners between 1864 and 1865 where 13,000 of them died. The Camp stood just east of Andersonville in the Southwest corner of Macon County, Georgia. As well as the former prison, the site also contains the Andersonville National Cemetery and the National Prisoner of War Museum. The site is an iconic reminder of the horrors of Civil War prisons. It was commanded by Major Henry Wirz, who was tried and executed after the war for murder. It was overcrowded to four times its capacity, with inadequate water supply, reduction in food rations, and unsanitary conditions.
