Girls basketball: North Olmsted hits the boards, beats Lorain Filed on November 30, 2015 by Bob Daniels LORAIN North Olmsted went to work on the backboards in the second half, fended off two Lorain rallies and went home with a 34-24 non-conference win over Lorain on Monday night. The Eagles (3-1) got nine points each from the Kemp girls, senior Stephanie and junior Juliana, seven by Stephanie in the fourth quarter. Lorain s Breanna Battle (00) shoots for the basket against North Olmsted s Emily Ellis (22) during a game on Monday, Nov. 30, 2015. Lorain lost the game, 34-24. BRIAN J. SMITH/CHRONICLE They also outrebounded the 0-3 Titans 28-16 after the break. The teams played even on the boards the first 16 minutes. We talked at halftime about slowing down with the ball and run our offense a little more, not go at their pace and take it at our own level, Stephanie Kemp said. We fought back because we wanted it more. Lorain held the lead twice, 3-2 and 7-6. The game belonged to North Olmsted thereafter. The Eagles tied it at 7 by the end of the first quarter, then went on a 7-1 run that consumed most of the second. They led 14-10 at the break, with Juliana Kemp scoring five of her nine points. The Eagles Anne Bloomfield scored five of her seven points in the second half. Stephanie Kemp held a hot hand in the fourth quarter when she nailed North Olmsted s only 3-point basket. Lorain junior Tremia Blair scored six of her team-high seven points in the second half. Freshman Normajanae Bohannon finished with six, including the Titans only 3-pointer. Bohannon is the sister of Naz Bohannon, Lorain s heavily recruited football and basketball star. 8
We re still in the process of building this team, Eagles coach John McDermott said. Give Lorain credit. They really outplayed us. They re younger than we are. We have the experience, and we relied on that at times, but it didn t help us. But that goes back to even though we re older, we re still learning. The second half, we played a lot better. We got every shot we wanted in the first half, but we just couldn t make them. We were missing layups. On our shot charts, we use X s (for missed shots) and colored circles. With our misses, in tic-tac-toe, X is going to win every time. Lorain coach Marc Feldmann said his players created scoring opportunities and took reasonable shots, but couldn t get them to fall. In fact, both teams struggled shooting the ball. North Olmsted made just 26 percent of its field-goal attempts. The Titan shot 16.7 percent from the floor. We just couldn t score, Feldmann said. We re not a bad scoring team, but we force things sometimes, sometimes we take ill-advised shots or shoot too quick. But we held them to 34 points and 34 points in a varsity game, you should win. We have some inexperienced kids out there and we just couldn t put the ball in the basket. 9
