2 Skip Auld, Anne Arundel County Public Library Chief Executive Officer This year s Summer Reading Club (SRC), based on the theme: Build a Better World, features events and opportunities for people of all ages to build knowledge, community and new experiences. Whether you try out Virtual Reality, construct a robot, create a zany architectural masterpiece or join a sing-along, you are sure to build yourself a better world by participating in the program. Other performances sure to blow your mind include: the magical stylings of Joe Romano, fantastic basketball feats by Spencer Spinny Johnson, amazing dance moves from Footworks Percussive Dance Ensemble and spellbinding tricks courtesy of canine cuties Mario and Bella. See pages four and five for a complete schedule of events. The popular Bowie Baysox Summer Reading Night is back and scheduled for August 18. All SRC participants ages 15 and younger will receive a free ticket for the game and are invited to join an on-field parade. Again this year, online registration is also available making SRC sign up easier that ever. Anne Arundel County Public Library Join the 2017 Summer Reading Club and JUNE 1 AUGUST 5 Enjoy an interactive puppet show based on the story of the Three Billy Goats Gruff: Billy s Bridge. Join Billy, Nan and the kid as they think like scientists and use the engineering method to get to the other side of the creek. Joe Romano will present a mind-blowing magic show stressing the importance of reading. Bringing Literature to Life Nationally-known entertainer Chris Fascione brings children s stories to life through his unique combination of acting, storytelling, comedy and juggling. Jacks Are Wild Marian DeAngelo s trained Jack Russell Terriers Mario and Bella will demonstrate their ability to play the piano, read and perform other amazing tricks, which will entertain people of all ages. Spencer Spinny Johnson, formerly associated with the famous Harlem Globetrotters, brings a high energy program which stresses the importance of healthy eating, exercise and getting a good education. Longtime Foundation friends, Cathy and John Belcher served as Honorary Chairs for this year s event which raised more than $46,000 for the library. Whole Foods Market Honors Library Foundation Via 5 % Day On February 15, the Whole Foods Market in Towne Centre donated 5 percent of their total sales for the day to the Library Foundation. Four times a year, the Whole Foods chooses an area nonprofit organization to be the recipient of a single day s receipts from that store. The Library Foundation received over $6,500 from the event. AACPL s Marketing and Communications Manager Christine Feldmann, with Outreach Librarian Kt Zawodny, developed an all-day program with library staff who led an in-store storytime for Whole Foods shoppers, staffed tables where people could sign up for a library card and even check out a book, see craft demonstrations and learn about upcoming library programs. The day was a unique opportunity for the library to bring its programs and services to the public while also receiving a generous corporate gift for the library. Library Hosts City Council Members On February 7, members of the City Council and staff from the mayor s office were invited to view the newly installed SMART Table in the children s area at the library. The table was purchased with a $12,100 City of Community Grant awarded to the Library Foundation in 2016. Fred Paone and Rhonda Pindell Charles of the City Council were on hand for the demonstration which was also attended by library staff and Library Board Chair Don Roland. Designed to be used by one or more children, the SMART Table encourages collaborative learning and creative problem solving. Up to eight children can learn together at the same time interacting with activities on the table s multi-touch surface. The table features a large variety of education activities designed to teach early literacy skills.
