CRAUGHWELL U N IT E D BLACK AND BLUE The Craughwell United FC Newsletter Issue 18 April 2016 Celebrating 25 Years in 2016 U12 Boys still in Championship League title race Free Craughwell United s U12A boys have been fighting it out at the top of the Championship Division table for the entire season. Recent wins over Corrib Celtic, Colga and Moyne Villa followed by a 3-3 draw with Galway Hibs in Bohermore leave them in a tussle with Kiltullagh for title honours. Against Hibs, Dara Collins twice gave United the lead but the home side responded each time to equalise. Kieran O Connor put Craughwell 3-2 up, only for Hibs to score a late equaliser. Then in the dying moments, the excellent Adam Stewart hit the post and when Danny Morrissey scored with the rebound, he was harshly judged offside and so it finished 3-3. At the time of writing, Craughwell must win their final game at home to Corrib Celtic and hope that other results go their way if they are to win the Championship League title. Good luck lads! CUFC U16 girls are made of strong stuff! Laura Cunningham Aoife Raftery Shauna Tobin Sarah Phillips Siobhan Creaven The U16 girls were victims of the classic fixture pile-up scenario when they had to play four league games in a week this April. On Thursday 14th in Headford, Laura Cunningham volleyed United in front before Moyne Villa equalised to leave the final score at 1-1. Saturday 16th saw the girls losing 5-0 at home to a very strong Salthill Devon side. Tuesday 18th was another home match against Corrib Celtic. The away side were much fresher and quickly went 3-0 up in the first half. Manager Declan Craven galvanised the girls to a much improved second half display which, despite a lot of clearcut chances, yielded only one Laura Cunningham free kick in response. Then on Thursday 21st, the girls put in a huge performance to record a deserved 3-0 away win over Athenry with goals from Laura Cunningham and two from the excellent Aoife Raftery. In a tough derby encounter Shauna Tobin and Sarah Phillips competed well to win the midfield battle while United keeper Siobhan Creaven made an unbelievable full stretch save to deny Athenry a consolation goal. U17 Boys 2 v 3 Corrib Celtic on Sunday 17 January Jack Lally put United one up in the first half with a perfect free kick over the wall into the left corner. However, Celtic hit back with two goals finished from corner kicks in quick succession. The away side went further ahead in the second half when their striker ran on to a blocked clearance and finished clinically. Craughwell pulled one back through Eoin Fahy but were never able to find the equaliser after that. Wins over Maree/Oranmore FC and Mervue United in subsequent matches meant the U17s went on to finish a very creditable fourth in the Premier League table. Back row - Oisin Woodlock, Mark Cunningham, Cillian Dolan, Eoin Fahy, Oisin O Brien, Troy Slattery, Conor Roche, Morgan Flynn, Adam Lawlor-Smalle, Kyle Heverin. Front row - Jack Doran, Alan Callanan, Jack Lally, Jonathan Boland, Danny Pearce, Cian Egan. 6

Club Spring Fashion Show a great success Craughwell United s Spring Fashion Show which took place on Thursday 10 March in the Loughrea Hotel and Spa was a memorable and enjoyable night, well supported with 250 people in attendance. Thank you to Mandy Maher and her Catwalk models for a professional show and to all the boutiques, menswear and accessories shops for their wide variety of styles. Also to the Loughrea Hotel for the beautiful venue, McInerney s SuperValu for the sponsoring the Wine reception and not forgetting the prize sponsors for a great raffle to round off the evening. However good the professional models were, they couldn't raise the same cheers as our own models from the U10 girls and boys up to the older lads and lassies who added the vital Craughwell United ingredient. Well done to our own Fashion Show committee and club volunteers who organised the night and ran it without fuss. See you all again next year. Fashion Show Committee - Geraldine Doran, Mary Gilligan, Anne-Marie Flanagan, Brenda Mulveen, Laura Cloonan, Ciara Dolan, Miriam McCartin, Trish Gilligan, Tom Cunningham. U18 Girls 1 v 2 Corrib rangers on Sunday 28 February The away side went one up early on before Caoimhe Reidy played a great ball into striker Laura Cunningham who scored to square the match. Into the second half, United keeper Siobhan Creaven pulled off a fantastic save to keep the sides level but could do nothing minutes later when the Rangers striker blasted a great half volley over the reach of the United keeper. Craughwell then missed several chances to equalise from Caoimhe Reidy, Laura Cunningham and Ciana Reidy, but great credit must go to the Rangers keeper who was outstanding all day. A big thank you to manager Bill Doran who tooks the girls all the way through the juvenile ranks and can now retire gracefully. Craughwell United easter Camp Craughwell United held their Easter Soccer Camp at the Craughwell school astro pitch with ninety five players taking part. Patrick Phillips and his fellow coaches maintained a good spirit in the camp throughout the week with the weather very favourable until Friday when strong winds and heavy rain forced a final day cancellation. Special mention of gratitude to Jody Connolly for sponsoring the Thursday refreshments.
