JUNE 2017 A Message from the President What a great time we all had at the Mardi Gras Spring Luncheon! As always, it s great to get caught up with everyone after the long winter and get excited for the arrival of spring and the golf season. As many members couldn t attend the event, I thought I d take this opportunity to share my comments on the colors of Mardi Gras, their meaning, and how they could be applied to the game of golf. PURPLE stands for JUSTICE, and what is right. Kind of a no brainer as to how that applies to golf! As we all know, golf has many rules and a high standard of honesty. In fact, Honesty, Integrity and Judgement are 3 of the 9 core values taught through the First Tee. GREEN stands for FAITH. Couple of ways that relates to golf for me. Out on the course, I have to have faith in my golf shot, my competitor or teammate, and myself. Again, a First Tee core value is Confidence. Faith, of course, also represents religion and I believe that being outside in this beautiful place we call home is an excellent way to worship no matter what your beliefs may be. Finally, GOLD stands for POWER and Wealth. Well, golf can be a very expensive sport! But when you make that perfect shot, break 100, 90, 80 for the first time, get a par, birdie or eagle don t you feel a sense of power and satisfaction? We are We are certainly made wealthy by the friendships we make though golf and on that score, I have treasures to last a lifetime. certainly made wealthy by the friendships we make though golf and on that score, I have treasures to last a lifetime. I ve decided to embrace the theme of Mardi Gras for my summer season, even going as far as using Purple, Green & Gold as my colors for my flower pots on the deck. A big round of applause to Kathy Patton for putting it all together and all those who pitched in to help with the set up and break down. As always, Belle has done a great job with our annual calendar and we certainly appreciate her contact at GCI, Nancy Hayes, who donates her time to run off the copies for us. It is a generous gift from both Nancy and GCI. Days play is off and running and our first day of Team Match Play is June 5th. I know firsthand that the organizers of our team events and tournaments are hard at work to make sure it is a great summer season. The time and energy they put in to the AWGA is greatly appreciated! We are still looking for someone to coordinate Days Play at Settlers Bay, a Nominating Chair, and Mentors for our new members. Please feel free to contact me directly if you are interested in volunteering. We currently have at least 7 new members so let s welcome them to the AWGA! Make sure you get in your application for Belle s Fun Tournament one of the highlights of our season. Every year I m blessed to have someone in my foursome that I haven t met or had the opportunity to golf with it s a great experience. And Jamie Berge will be holding a Rules Clinic on June 8th at 3pm for those of you interested in brushing up on your knowledge. Looking forward to a great 2017 Season! Laissez Le Golf Balls Roulez!

AWGA Rules Clinic Thursday, June 8th @ 3pm We have a rules clinic on the calendar for Thursday, June 8th @ 3pm at AGC. Please RSVP me if you plan to attend as I need a general number to determine space needed and alert the restaurant and staff. In addition to covering some of the most misunderstood definitions and rules that regularly come into play, I will give a short review of the new simplified rules coming in 2019 that are intended to make the rules easier and speed up pace of play. sponsored by Brown s Lighting Gallery June 12-13, 2017 Entries for Belle s FUN Tourney are due by June 5th. Join us for 2 days of fun golf. Come help us get the golf season off to a good start and help welcome any new golfers into our group. This is a wonderful chance for newcomers to get acquainted with the women golfers in Anchorage. Remember, this is a FUN tournament. There is no pressure to get a good total score. You all help your team. You will be playing two 18 hole Anchorage courses and will play with 6 different women over the two days. The first day is a best ball format and your team only needs one good score on each hole. Because you get handicap pops, each player has a chance to have the score that counts. Monday will be at Anchorage Golf Course with tee times starting at 8 am. Tuesday is a scramble. We are asking you to ride on Tuesday. It will speed things up considerably. We are subsidizing the cost of the carts. By raising the entry fee $3 we were able to provide free carts on Wednesday. What a deal! Thanks to Chip Brown (our sponsor), we were able to make this work. There will be an awards luncheon following play on Tuesday. This day is an 8 am shotgun start so the luncheon will be at approximately one o clock. Early entries really help our planning committee. Don t delay - get your entry in early. Please bring a checkbook or cash with you on Monday to pre-pay your Tuesday green fees. If you have a punch card or are military, you may pay on Tuesday. You do need to be a member of AWGA and have an established handicap by June 5th.

APPLICATION sponsored by Brown s Lighting Gallery ENTRY FEE ENTRY DEADLINE $38.00 (plus green fees) includes lunch and free cart on Tuesday, door prizes and awards June 5, 2017 (You may use a punch card for green fees.) You will play with six different women over the two days. Each team will have an A, B, C, and D player. Since these are team events, there is no pressure on individual scores.
