Event Context - Olympics 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games are the biggest logistical challenge a city can face. TfL had two objectives First, to support a great Games - helping athletes and officials reach events on time, and providing slick and friendly transport for spectators Second, to keep London moving - ensuring Londoners could get around their city, and helping businesses make the most of opportunities from the Games
Event Context - Olympics 2012 Detailed planning TfL was involved from the start - helping to design and deliver London s winning bid in 2005 Promise to deliver transport upgrades across London to provide the capacity needed for the Games Detailed planning was undertaken to deliver an effective transport service and excellent spectator transport experience TfL also designed the Olympic and Paralympic Route Networks to make sure athletes, officials and others essential to the running of the Games could travel around London smoothly
London 2012 saw massive crowds at venues across the city 7.4 million ticketed spectators at the Olympic Games, 6.25 million in London alone across 29 venues A sell-out Paralympic Games, with 2.7 million ticketed spectators across 15 venues As well as providing transport, TfL prepared roads, deployed marshals and erected barriers to create the field of play for world class sports venues One million attended Olympic Cycling Road Races 300,000 attended Olympic Marathons 220,000 attended Olympic Triathlons 200,000 attended Olympic Cycling Time Trials 50,000 attended Paralympic Marathons 30,000 attended Olympic Marathon Swims 30,000 attended Olympic Race Walks

Transport for London (TfL) Traffic Directorate Responsible for Smoothing traffic flow. Achieved by making sure that traffic operates quickly and efficiently, while maximising technology opportunities. Delivering the Mayor s Transport Strategy Managing the London Streets Traffic Control Centre Maintenance of London s traffic operations infrastructure, including 6,000 traffic signals Providing a traffic modelling centre of excellence Technology development Supporting development of Network Management Plans
London Streets Traffic Control Centre LSTCC Keep London Moving 24 hours a day by managing events, incidents and congestion. 580km of major roads (including bridges and tunnels). 6,000 traffic signals. 1450 CCTV cameras. It is impractical to monitor all cameras manually
Image Recognition automatically detects congestion incidents and alerts the operator

During-Scenario Measured data at site 012145
After-Scenario Measured data at site 012145
Whole Evaluation Period Measured data at site 016743 Problems of evaluation are strong daily fluctuations and the distance between detection and elicitation area More congestion in the aftermath of the available data than sent alarms No methodical dependencies can be deduced logically for this location

Results of the Questionnaires Evaluation of 3 answered questionnaires - just qualitative analysis possible Main Problems of London s daily traffic - road works, accidents, fluctuate traffic volume and - congestions, limited number of traffic operators - starting point for autonomous camera system
Results of the Questionnaires London s traffic during the Olympics - lighter and better traffic flow - striking shifting to the public transport system Expanding of the camera system - for general daily traffic and also for large events - ensured knowledge of incidents important for both cases
General Effects Improving traffic flow Maintaining an acceptable and known traffic flow Reducing the impact of unplanned incidents Increase efficiency of traffic operations Expanding of the camera system
Outlook Well-engineered detecting parameters Avoid disturbing factors Camera system detect congestions, when vehicles are not moving for a set period
Summary Exceptional preparation and planning has lead to a successful Olympic Games in London 2012. TfL s marketing campaign and Olympic road traffic strategies helped reduce the number of vehicles on the road. This ensured that the number of incidents in identified was much less than anticipated. Traffic control centre operators were automatically alerted to incidents on the ORN, using video analytics on some of 1450 cameras. Novel technology was successfully used for this demonstration where 3G SMART cameras were used in locations where the control centre had no visual capacity.
