TALENT ACADEMY 2018 Preparation Notes for Portfolio Submission in Dance (for all applicants) DSA-Secondary and DSA Secondary (Non-MOE) Applicants SOTA offers a holistic dance education with a focus on training in Ballet, Contemporary Dance forms, as well as supplementary classes in international ethnic dance genres, such as Chinese Dance, Malay Dance, and Indian Dance. The Dance curriculum also includes theory classes in Dance Contextual Studies, Composition and Improvisation, and Body Awareness sessions. Dance auditions at the SOTA Talent Academy are structured to allow candidates to express their passion for dance, and to showcase their potential and suitability required for the education in and through this art form. Although not essential, applicants may have some formal training in dance. Some prior exposure to Ballet or Contemporary Dance training is preferred but not essential, prior to auditioning for the SOTA Dance programme. An open mind, enjoyment of movement, and appetite for pushing physical and mental boundaries is an advantage. What to Submit for Dance Portfolio All applicants are required to submit the following for their Dance portfolio submission via the TA Portal: 1. 1-minute dance video 2. 2 photos 3. Relevant Dance credentials (optional) Item 1-minute solo dance video Description Recording of applicant performing a solo dance of his/her choice (any genre of dance) If the dance choreography requires a dance partner, only the applicant will be assessed Include at least one kick 1, one jump 2 and travelling across the floor * Applicants will be assessed on: a. Range of movement of joints b. Coordination c. Performance and musicality * If the dance choreography or the genre of dance chosen does not have a kick, jump and/or travelling across the floor, applicant may include the movements separately at the end of their 1- minute solo performance. 1 A kick would need to show the highest either of the applicant s legs can kick to 2 A jump would be from two legs and landing on either one or two legs Instructions: Should be recorded in a studio setting, or any open space/room Recorded in a single take (no editing); cannot be professionally produced Upload the video to Google Drive and share the link on the TA Portal Title of Video: Applicant s Full Name & Dance Form Privacy Setting: Anyone with the link Attire Appropriate dance practice gear, or plain, form fitting top and shorts (refer to Annex A) 2 photos 2 recent 4R full-length photos of applicants dressed in ballet attire (for dance ballet) or a form fitting top and shorts (for all other dance types) The 2 photos should consist of : 1 frontal photo and 1 profile photo (refer to Annex A) Instructions: Combine the 2 photos into 1 file File Name: Full Name_DSA_Photos File Type Allowed:.pdf,.jpg,.jpeg Maximum File Size Allowed: 10 MB 2

These may include achievements / awards received in 2018 Examples of relevant credentials may include the following items: a. Letters of reference from schools or teachers, testifying to the applicant s artistic experience and merit b. Evidence of participation in dance performances in and/or out of school (e.g. Singapore Youth Festival, summer schools, competitions, concerts or workshops) c. TALENT ACADEMY 2018 Preparation Notes for Audition in Dance (for shortlisted applicants) DSA-Secondary and DSA-Secondary (Non-MOE) Applicants What Shortlisted Applicants Will Experience During the Talent Academy All shortlisted applicants will be required to participate and complete the following activities: 1. Cognitive exercises 2. Panel interview 3. Entrance tests (for DSA-Secondary (Non-MOE) applicants only) 4. Dance Auditions: a. Participate in a basic Ballet Barre class b. Participate in a structured movement class c. Perform a 1-minute solo of their preferred genre (applicants are allowed to perform the same dance routine that they have submitted for their TA application d. Be interviewed by a panel of Dance teachers Note: Although pre-audition video submitted can be in any genre of dance, all shortlisted applicants will undergo the same classes in the Talent Academy. How to Prepare for Dance Audition Below are some pointers on how to prepare for the audition. Preparation for the Audition Applicants should keep practising their 1 minute solo dance performance Prepare the music for the 1 minute solo dance performance in either a CD or digital format Applicants should be faithful with their stretching On the Dance Audition Day Come with an open mind, ready and willing to try various dance forms during the audition Be dressed in the appropriate gear and neatly groomed Be punctual, approach the audition like a public performance Bring the music to the 1 minute solo dance performance in either a CD or digital format Remember that the audition panelists are just as keen to enjoy their performance. Bring their smile and passion for dance! Attire (Annex A) Female Leotard (any colour) * Convertible ballet tights or leggings (cut out at the soles) Ballet/dance slippers ** A towel and something to keep warm (e.g. a tracksuit) Hair should be pulled away from the face and neatly tied into a bun Male Form-fitting sleeveless top (any colour) Opaque coloured tights / bicycle shorts White socks (lightweight sport socks above ankle, below calf muscle) Canvas ballet flats / dance slippers A towel and something to keep warm (e.g. a tracksuit) Hair should be neatly groomed * In the event where applicant does not own a leotard, please be attired in a form-fitting sleeveless top and leggings or bicycle shorts ** In the event where applicant does not own ballet / dance slippers, socks are advised as the alternative footwear 4
