SWIMMING POOL: NORMAL OPERATING PROCEDURES 1. A deck level pl with an extended shallw end which then shelves t a 2m deep end Dimensins: 25m x 13m Depths: 1.2m shallw end t 2m deep end Six lanes are marked by a dark blue tile line alng the centre f each lane, lanes are 2m wide 3m x 5m remvable platfrm lcated in the shallw end reducing the water depth t 0.74 metres fr teaching purpses 2. Bather lad The maximum bather lad fr the pl is 60 3. Prcedures fr pening and securing the building Prir t a swimming lessn/training sessin check that the changing rm entrance drs are pen Unlck the pl ffice internal dr t gain access t the pl hall Once the Duty Member f Staff and their Assistant are n plside, the changing rm drs t the pl hall will be pened When the lessn/training sessin has finished the Duty Member f Staff will ensure all pupils have left the pl and lck the changing rm and pl ffice blue drs t prevent unauthrised access t the pl hall Prir t leaving the swimming pl the Duty Member f staff will make the fllwing checks: That all pupils have left the building That the fllwing drs are lcked: changing rms t pl hall, pl ffice t pl hall and entrance lbby t pl hall During the schl day the fllwing drs will remain unlcked: changing rm entrance, pl ffice entrance, and main entrance 4. Emergency alarm and rescue equipment Fur red emergency alarm buttns are lcated n the walls near each crner f the pl Six emergency grab bags are evenly lcated arund the pl Lifeguard ples are lcated at either end f the pl Green strage bin cntaining fil blankets and flip flps is situated n the grass area alngside the pl accessed by the large plside fire exit drs. The keys fr this cntainer are lcated in the pl ffice and als in the bx next t the plside fire dr Spinal bard is lcated n plside. This is nly t be used by a persn trained in the use f such equipment Please refer t site plan fr detailed lcatins f emergency equipment

Fire alarms and extinguishers Fire alarms and extinguishers are lcated at the tp and bttm f the stairs in bth entrance lbbies, plus tw further alarm call pints in the pl hall lcated n the wall ppsite the changing rms Fire alarm, CO2, water and fam extinguishers are lcated in the plant rm t the left f the main plant rm entrance dr 6. Access and exit rutes: Swimmers will enter and exit the pl hall via the changing rms Teaching staff may enter and exit the pl via the pl ffice There are three ther entrance/exit rutes fr the pl hall: tw via the plant rm, ne next t the pl ffice 7. Emergency exits There are five emergency exit drs leading frm the pl hall: Fur separate glass drs alng the wall ppsite the changing rms leading ut t the walled garden The dr at the shallw end f the pl n the changing rm side leading t the pl lbby and main exit dr 8. Public address The public address amplifier and micrphne is lcated in the pl ffice 9. First aid equipment First aid bx is lcated in the pl ffice 10. Emergency Telephne The emergency telephne is lcated in the pl ffice The cntact telephne numbers are shwn in the pl ffice and in the Operating Rules r dial 999 t call the emergency services 11. Pl ffice is lcated ff the main entrance lbby with direct access t the pl hall 12. Teachers Duties and Respnsibilities Teachers and ther staff invlved in swimming activities must read and understand all relevant pl instructins and be familiar with the lcatins f: emergency alarm buttns first aid equipment rescue equipment emergency telephne fire alarm pints fire extinguishers 13. Teacher t pupil ratis, these are a maximum as per ASA recmmendatins: Nn swimmers and beginners 12:1 thse unable t swim 10m unaided Children under the age f seven 12:1 Irrespective f their swimming ability Imprving swimmers seven years and ver 20:1 prviding all children can swim at least 10m cmpetently n their back and frnt

Club/Squad training sessins 25:1, up t 45:2, up t 60:3 Training nly with cmpetent swimmers Minimum qualificatin fr teaching staff is a current NRASTC qualificatin this will allw the teacher t lifeguard their class. This nly applies t*prgrammed swimming*sessins During curriculum swimming lessns there must be at least tw members f staff n duty whilst there is a grup f pupils in the pl area, ne f whm will be the Designated Duty Member f staff wh must hld the minimum qualificatin fr teaching staff and will take charge f the lessn During club and squad training sessins there must be ne member f staff n duty n plside subject wh will be the Designated Duty Member f staff, subject t the swimmer t staff ratis stated abve. In additin a secnd adult/ respnsible persn must be in attendance n plside All club and squad swimmers must be instructed in the prcedures required t assist the member f staff in the event f an incident r accident. This instructin shuld be given and recrded at the start f each term A *prgrammed swimming sessin* is defined as: With frmal structure Disciplined Supervised r cntrlled Cntinuusly mnitred frm the plside In a recreatinal situatin the maximum rati is 1 lifeguard t 25 swimmers with a minimum f tw members f staff n duty ne f whm must be the qualified lifeguard. Lifeguards shuld hld a current NPLQ qualificatin which is applicable t a water depth f at least 2metres 14. Swimming Pl Equipment All plside equipment shuld be checked by a member f staff prir t use. This might include: Starting blcks, ensuring they are secure and in gd cnditin Lane rpes, ensuring they are prperly tensined and the cables are nt damaged Training aids such as kick bards, pull buys, flats etc. ensuring they are in gd cnditin.(these must be allwed t dry befre being stred away) Faulty r damaged equipment shuld nt be used and reprted t the Head f PE 15. Hire f Pl t Outside Organisatins: Checklist f pints fr inclusin in cntract and perating rules: Infrmatin n numbers and age f thse participating and their swimming abilities Name f hirer s representative wh will be in charge f the grup Numbers and qualificatins f swimming teachers/lifeguards t be present during swimming sessins. SWIMMING POOL: EMERGENCY ACTION PLAN Intrductin The fllwing prcedures are set s that all staff and hirers are able t react t an emergency situatin with cnfidence and efficiency. The bject f these prcedures is t ensure that all staff and hirers are familiar with their rle and the rle f ther members f staff if an emergency evacuatin f the Pl is required. The evacuatin prcedure is used in situatins such as fire, gas escape, and bmb scare. Other situatins that may arise requiring evacuatin may include pwer/lighting failure, structural failure etc. This decisin will be made by the duty member f staff. All staff wh are invlved in prviding curriculum swimming lessns and club, squad, training sessins and hirers must ensure that they have read and understand the Nrmal Operating Prcedures and Emergency Actin Plan befre using the Swimming Pl Facility, and must sign t that effect. 1. Disrderly Behavir All swimmers must behave in an rderly manner and bey instructins given by their swimming teacher. Any pupil wh fails t adhere t these instructins will be sent ut f the pl area and disciplined accrdingly. 2. Lack f Water Clarity Swimming will nt cmmence if the clarity f the water is pr. Teaching staff must be able t clearly see the bttm f the deep end f the pl. Any prblems with the clarity f the pl must be immediately reprted t the Head f Maintenance and Services, r the duty Caretaker in their absence. 3. Bather in Serius Difficulty Immediately sund the panic alarm, the swimming teacher will immediately affect a rescue whilst the secnd member f staff will quickly clear the pl. The Duty member f staff will cntact the schl matrn r dial 999 fr the ambulance service, as necessary. If a spinal injury is suspected the casualty must be supprted in the water, maintaining the head in the same psitin relative t the bdy and await prfessinal medical assistance. An Incident Reprt must be cmpleted as sn as pssible after the event. 4. Discvery f an Uncnscius Casualty in the Water Immediately sund the panic alarm, the swimming teacher will immediately affect a rescue whilst the secnd member f staff will quickly clear the pl The duty member f staff will then dial 999 fr the ambulance service 5. Reprting Prcedure in the event f an accident / incident Statutry bligatin The reprting f Injuries, Diseases and Dangerus Occurrences Regulatins 1995 (cmmnly knwn as RIDDOR) makes it the Schl s respnsibility t reprt certain specified incidents t the Health and Safety Executive

Fatal Accidents The death f any persn as a result f an accident. Majr Injury Accident defined as: 1. Fracture ther than fingers r tes 2. Dislcatin f the shulder, hip, knee r spine 3. Lss f sight (temprary r permanent) 4. Chemical r ht metal burn t an eye 5. Any penetrating injury t the eye 6. Injury frm electric shck r electrical burn leading t uncnsciusness r requiring resuscitatin r admissin t hspital fr mre than 24 hrs Any ther injury leading t: 1. Hypthermia, heat induced illness, uncnsciusness, r requiring resuscitatin. 2. Or requiring admissin t hspital fr mre than 24 hrs. 3. Uncnsciusness caused by asphyxia r expsure t harmful substances r bilgical agent. Acute illness: 1. requiring medical treatment r lss f cnsciusness arising frm absrptin thrugh the skin 2. requiring medical treatment where there is reasn t believe that this resulted frm expsure t a bilgical agent r its txins r infected material Any member f the public, visitr pupil, etc., taken t hspital (direct frm the site f an accident)

SWIMMING POOL: EMERGENCY EVACUATION PROCEDURE Whilst there is a grup f pupils in the pl area, there must be at least ne member f staff wh hlds at least a current NRASTC (Natinal Rescue Award fr Swimming Teachers & Caches) qualificatin in charge f the grup. This persn will be the designated Duty Member f Staff wh will take cntrl in the event f an emergency. Fr curriculum swimming lessns there must be at least tw members f staff n duty whilst there is a grup f pupils in the pl area, ne f whm must be the Duty Member f Staff. In case f an emergency the Duty Member f Staff r an accmpanying Member f Staff must: Think, assess the situatin, and act quickly and calmly n yur assessment. D nt panic In the event f an emergency the Duty Member f Staff will blw ludly three times n their whistle t raise the alarm. Pupils must STOP, LOOK and LISTEN t instructins given If necessary a member f staff will press ne f the fur PANIC BUTTONS situated n the wall near each crner f the pl, r give clear instructins t anther persn t d s The Duty Member f Staff will clear the pl and if necessary evacuate the class frm the building. The secnd member f staff will deal with any casualties Pupils will either be directed t the seats at the side f the pl t await further instructins, r in the case f evacuatin they will be directed in an rderly fashin t the nearest safe emergency exit, where a member f staff will issue a fil blanket and a pair f flip fps frm the green strage cntainer Pupils shuld then reprt t the POOL ASSEMBLY POINT which is the grass area within the walled garden behind the pl building If the POOL ASSEMBLY POINT is cnsidered unsafe then the Duty Member f Staff shuld use their discretin as t where t assemble Pupils are nt allwed t stp t cllect their belngings unless directed t d s by the Duty Member f Staff Staff will nt allw the pupils back int the swimming pl until the building has been declared safe On activatin f the Pl Panic Alarm between the hurs f 08.00 18.00 the schl ffice will cntact a member f the Maintenance Team (Head f Maintenance & Services, Bursar, Maintenance Assistants, r Duty Caretaker) t attend the pl The member f the Maintenance Team will assess the situatin with the Pl Duty Member f Staff and take ne f the fllwing curses f actin: 1. Silence the alarm. 2. Call fr further assistance if needed. 3. Re-set the alarm panel when the incident is ver. They will then recrd the incident n the Pl Alarm Recrd Sheet.
