During this old-fashioned holiday event, historic downtown Nevada City is closed to motor vehicles and transformed back in time. Christmas melodies, costumed characters and twinkling lights atop old Gold Rush buildings remind visitors of another time. There is no admission charged. At locations throughout downtown, Victorian singers, bagpipers, brass bands and strolling minstrels provide warm Christmas music. Nevada City s famous and a living nativity scene can be found, along with hot roasted chestnuts and horse drawn carriage rides. Costumed art and craft vendors line the streets with unique Christmas and gift items for sale. The downtown specialty shops are open for business. Food vendors sell tasty treats including sausage and pork sandwiches, hot apple cider, mulled wine, hot toddies and delicious pastry treats. Shuttle Buses With limited parking in the downtown area, shuttle buses carry visitors from the Nevada County Government Center off Hwy 49. Nevada City United Methodist Church Open House As you walk the streets of our magical town, be sure to work your way to the top of the Broad Street hill to the United Methodist Church outlined with beautiful Christmas lights. At each of the Vistorian Christmas Wednesday evenings and Sunday afternoons the church s Craft Faire is in full swing, with refreshments including cider, cookies, Santa Claus and musical performances. The church welcomes everyone with a warm room to relax, and RESTROOMS are available. Roasted Chestnuts A favorite attraction at are chestnuts roasting over an open fire. We welcome back Cecil Snow, our favorite Victorian chimney sweep who keep s the fire going every evening of. Feast on the yummy chestnuts provided by the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce. Shop Locally for the Holidays You don t need to drive down the hill for your holiday shopping. The Nevada City Chamber of Commerce is encouraging all Nevada County residents to Shop Locally during the upcoming holiday season. Local merchants do a large percantage of their annual sales at this time of year. Shopping locally benefits our community through taxes, employment and economic development. Nevada City offers a diverse selection of quality merchandise at very competitive prices. Many local shops offer free gift wrapping, lay-away and personal customer service. Downtown Nevada City is decorated with natural green swags on the gas lights and the buildings are highlighted with white lights which creates the magic image of Nevada City. Most stores are open everday from 10am to 5:30pm and later on Wednesday evenings. Santa Visits It has been learned from a very reliable source that the Jolly Old Elf, Santa Claus, himself, is available for visits and photos at 215 Broad Street on each of the Wednesday evenings and Sundays afternoons of. The members of Evangeline #9 Order of Eastern Star help him at a cost of only $5 for a picture. Group pictures are possible depending on the size of the group. Pictures are not necessary to talk to Santa so children of all ages can visit with him. Monies collected will go to various charities and other organizations.
