Animal Science Youth Programs Events Update Animal Science Youth Extension Office April 2002 Goals for the ANS Events Update The Events Update newsletter represents an effort on the part of this office to keep county staff better informed about the activities in Animal Science. We encourage staff to use this information (directly or in summary) when compiling resource material in the county for interested youth. Check us out on the Web!!! Make plans now to attend these exciting events. Gearing up for the 2002 State 4-H Trail Ride -K. Waite If you like Trail riding, then the State 4-H Trail Ride is for you! 4-H families from across the state enjoy a weekend of organized trail rides and activities along with fantastic camp-style food! This year s ride

will be held at Goose Creek Trail Camp near Grayling, June 14-17. Registration materials will be in county offices in late March. Contact your County Extension office for more details. Looking for a new challenge? -K. Waite The Michigan 4-H Standardbred project may be for you! In it s 24th year, this program gives 4-H youth the chance to raise a Standardbred weanling for approximately 1 year, upon which the 4-H member sells the horse for the breeder at a Standardbred racehorse sale. This dynamic project gives kids the chance to experience many facets of the horse industry, and teaches them about record keeping and the financial aspects of keeping a horse. Contact your county extension office in late March for more details. The 2002 State 4-H Horse Show -K. Waite The State 4-H Horse Show is a three day event that brings together more than 500 4-H'ers representing Michigan counties. English, dressage, western, trail, jumping and gymkhana classes are offered for horses and ponies. Members are selected by their county 4-H programs to participate in this event. In 1997, the State 4-H Horse Show began offering classes for riders from county 4-H PEP (Horseback Riding for Handicappers) programs. Demonstrations & informational exhibits are also available for participants and spectators to enjoy. The 2002 State Horse Show will be held August 16-18, with entries due to the Equine Youth Extension Specialist by July 23, 2002. Michigan Junior Beef Show and Beef Showcase June 14-16, 2002 - MSU Pavilion. The annual event will include a heifer and steer show for junior exhibitors on Saturday, June 15 and an open cattle show on Sunday, June 16. In addition, there will be various skills contests for youth which will include a poster contest, beef skillathon, and herdsmens quiz, and showmanship. Various state beef cattle breed associations will conduct their state preview shows as part of the Beef Showcase. Entries must be postmarked by May, 27, 2002. Complete entry information will be available in mid April. 4-H Exploration Days - Udderly Fantastic Tour- June 19-21, 2002 - M. MacFarlane This year the 4-H program is celebrating it=s 100th birthday at Exploration Days come and join the birthday bash and annual state youth conference. When you are registering for sessions, look for the dairy session. The Udderly Fantastic Tour A310@ designed to be a fun way to tie in this years theme, Mammary Health and DHIA Records and provide good times for all. Michigan Spartan Classic Junior Hog Show Saturday, June 22, 2002 - MSU Pavilion. The annual Spartan Classic Junior Hog Show will include a market hog and prospect pig show, as well as skills contest that include showmanship, the pigathon quiz, and a poster contest. Entries must be postmarked by May 27, 2002. Complete entry information will be available in mid April. Michigan Junior Sheep Spectacular Saturday, June 22, 2002 - MSU Pavilion. The annual event will include market lambs, breeding sheep, production ewe class, shepherds quiz, essay contest, and advertising and promotion contest. Entries must be postmarked by May 27, 2002. Complete entry information will be available in mid April. MMPA Tour- June 25-26, 2002 - M. MacFarlane The 65 th annual Michigan Milk Producers Association/4-H Milk Marketing Tour is open to all youth ages 15-19 years old who are interested in learning more about milk marketing issues and cooperatives. Also students have the opportunity to earn one of five scholarships to the National 4-H Dairy Conference in Madison, Wisc.

Michigan 4-H Livestock Camp June 24-26, 2002 - Branch County 4-H Fairgrounds, Coldwater, Michigan. Come and join other 4-H members from across the state at the one and only Michigan Livestock Camp! The camp is open to 4-H members 11-19 (by December 31). Some species areas require a year of previous experience. Camp enrollment will be limited to 200 participants. Campers are required to bring their own project animals along with them to camp (with the exception of swine) and enjoy three days of hands-on opportunities to increase their knowledge and skills in selection, feeding, management, health care and fitting and showmanship. Participants will also get to test their knowledge of their species using special interactive computer programs! Sessions include: beef cattle, dairy feeder calves, dairy cattle, goats, sheep, swine, rabbits, horses, dog, poultry and a sweepstake session. Contact your local MSU Extension Office to request the Michigan 4-H Livestock Camp registration packet. Camp costs $70.00. Registration deadline is May 17. Michigan Swine Youth Challenge - K. Geuns The Michigan Swine Youth Challenge is a recognition program for swine exhibitors that excel in hog showmanship, poster design, knowledge quizzes, swine judging, skillathon, and pig placing. All of these competitions are offered at four events that will be sanctioned for points which include the Green & White (January 26), Spartan Classic (June 15), Michigan State Fair (August 20-23), and your local county fair (June-September). Again in 2002 is the option of counting two of the three statewide events (Green & White, Spartan Classic, and Michigan State Fair) to make the program more user friendly for school starting and fall sports participants. New this year will be a mentoring portion of the Challenge. Each participant will be required to interview an agricultural professional to learn more about a career in which they are interested. The ages for eligibility are 9-21 years of age. Concessions have been made to accommodate potential participants in the MSYC that are not eligible for their county fair. The points are calculated throughout the show year and the "Top 20" in the state will be announced in October. Top prizes include a year's use of an Alum-Line, Inc. "Popper" pig transport box, aluminum show boxes, clippers, pants, shirts, etc. The sign up, along with a $15.00 registration fee, must be made before 10:00 a.m. on June 15, 2002 at the Spartan Classic. All county Extension offices will receive information from Donna Hines or call your local AOE Swine Agent. Michigan Dairy Expo and 4-H Dairy Days-July 15-19, 2002 - M. MacFarlane This years 4-H Dairy Days will again be held in conjunction with the 6th annual Michigan Dairy Expo. All events will take place at the Pavilion In addition to Dairy Days; other events at the Michigan Dairy Expo will include the state breed shows and consumer education. Dairy Days events are designed for young people who are interested in dairy cattle and the dairy industry. National 4-H Dairy Conference-September 29-October 3, 2002 - M. MacFarlane The conference, as always, will be held during the 2002 World Dairy Expo. The purpose of this conference is to provide a way for the dairy industry to interact with youth and provide a better understanding of production, processing and marketing of dairy products. This event also broadens the understanding of careers available to youth in the dairy industry. State 4-H / FFA Livestock Judging Contest Tuesday, July 2, 2002 - MSU Pavilion. The 4-H division of the contest will be open to youth age 9-19. Youth will judge six classes of beef, sheep and swine, and present oral reasons on three classes or answer questions on three classes. Complete entry information will be available in mid April.

Overview of Recent Events 2002 Michigan 4-H /AHAM Benefit Clinic Draws a Crowd! -K. Waite The 2nd Annual Michigan 4-H/AHAM Benefit Clinic was held Sunday, March 24 at the MSU Pavilion. The Featured clinician was multi-national champion coach and instructor Leesa Massman. Ms. Massman worked with 3 groups of youth from both AHAM and 4-H programs around the state on Equitation Position and Perfecting the Pattern. A special thank you goes out to Ms. Massman who generously donated her time to assist the up and coming young riders listed below. Proceeds from the clinic are used to benefit both 4-H and AHAM youth horse programs. Stock Seat: Ashley Blair, Amanda Faczia, Alyson Faczia, Michelle Franco, Samantha Harkrider, Brittany Macom, Jennifer Manthey, Miechon Nickell, Chelsea Thompson Hunt Seat: Ashley Blair, Michelle Franco, Samantha Harkrider, Brittany Macom, Jennifer Manthey, Tammy Nutter, Gunnar Reiner, Chelsea Thompson, Emily Townsend, Alyssa Zokoe Saddle Seat: Danielle Faczia, Colleen Doherty, Tammy Nutter, Alea Spahr 25 th Annual 4-H Horse Benefit Clinic a Great Success! - K.Waite The 25 th Annual 4-H Horse Benefit clinic was held Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, along with the MQHYA Winter Spectacular show. This clinic is organized by the Michigan 4-H Horse Judges Advisory committee to both develop the skills of Michigan horsemen, and to raise money for national 4-H Judging, Horse Bowl and Hippology team trips. Several years ago, the Michigan 4-H Horse Program and MQHYA began working together on this event and the partnership has been very beneficial for both organizations! Richard Shrake was the featured clinician in 2002, and while the weather in the days leading up to the clinic was questionable, there was no question about Mr. Shrake=s popularity! Approximately 700 enthusiastic spectators came to enjoy and learn from Mr. Shrake=s innovative teaching methods. The morning was spent on Horse Psychology and Showmanship, while the afternoon focused on Resistance Free riding exercises. Twelve lucky 4-Hers were chosen from a record 56 applicants to ride in the clinic. They included; Rob Lemon (Barry County), Damian Massa (Ingham County), Nathan Thayer (Van Buren County), Rachel Papoi (Eaton County), Katie Ferraro (Monroe County), Jamie Gouin (Allegan County), Jennifer Norman (Missaukee County), Darcy Alderink (Ionia County), Meaghan Walters (Ingham County), Jimmy Hollis (Van Buren County) Dawn Culbreth and Dianna Robinson (Antrim County), Dawn also celebrated her birthday at the clinic, and was surprised with a birthday cake and a saddle at lunch time. The Michigan 4-H Horse Program would like to thank Kristie Gall, MQHA and MQHYA for their continued efforts at making this combined event so successful! 2002 State 4-H Rabbit Scholarship Recipients - D. Kiesling Each year the State 4-H Rabbit & Cavy Show honors selected 4-H Rabbit and Cavy members with college scholarships. This year four members were selected to receive scholarships: Danya Vergiels; Monroe County; Amanda Howe; Jackson County; Devon Gilbert, Oakland County and Gregory Moll, Lenawee County. Funds for this scholarship program come from the Annual Rabbit Auction and Raffle held in conjunction with the State 4-H Rabbit and Cavy Show. Watch for the 2003-scholarship program information in October of 2002.

2002 State 4-H Rabbit & Cavy Show Results - D. Kiesling 402 exhibitors from 48 counties exhibited 2043 entries in the 2002 State 4H Rabbit and Cavy Show held January 26, 2002 at the MSU Livestock Pavilion for Livestock and Education. Winner were: Rabbits: Best in Show: Erika Prince, Wexford County with a Mini Rex Best Six Class: Douglass Rombach, Lenawee County with a California Cavy Best in Show: Jeff Hickerson, Midland County with an American Reserve Kelsey Schultz, Midland County with a Texel There were 10 meat entries, 206 fur entries and 147 cavy entries.
