FROM THE CHAIR Good to see our President Ken Garrett and Sheila at our tournament dedicated to him last Sunday. The rain held off and no wind. Well done to the winners. The committee decided to investigate new club shirts with a view to retiring the yellow ones, mainly because they are bugmagnets. We are still looking at a replacement but what looks favourite at the moment is predominantly black with yellow bits instead of the current other way round. What we have in mind is a top similar to a cycling type top rather than an out-and-out polo shirt. We will be trialing a coiled round foam boss shortly. We like the Danage boss to shoot at but it is a bit of a handful to manhandle and store. Kathy White has agreed to be the club s Social Secretary. SHOOTING STARS Ian Lamprell continues to improve he has won the Chairman s Cup and the President s trophy now. Warwick Drew is improving and shooting pbs just now. Stuart Evans and Carlos Bolou are both on good form right now and I am sure that the friendly competition between them is an inspiration to both. June Mansfield came 3 rd in the Friars Gate 2-way longbow shoot a little while ago. Associate member Stevie Kent was first Gent recurve in the Kent Invitation at Vigo (2 nd year running) Well done to Greg Jackson, The Kevin Dick shield went to him and he is now going for 80yds qualification. Pretty good after only 6 weeks from the beginner s course. Watch out for our very own Keith Harding who is aiming for the 2020 Olympics. I guess we may see him back on the field when his sabbatical ends. Ian Sharp, Chairman ********************** This is an invitation to all our archers to come and take part in our internal competitions and home league matches. I know that some of you may be feeling too new, or are worried about your lack of form but take it from me, we have all been there. My shooting was terrible last year but I still took part in the competitions and league matches, they are fun. It doesn't matter how you do, no one is judging you, except you. Come and set your own challenge, go for a PB. We just want all our archers to come to the field and enjoy meeting other archers and to have a laugh. Hope I will see you on the field soon. Sue Vice Captain Secretary s Sidelines Members Nice Weather Good shooting days now? If you have not shot for a while, and are considering coming back to shoot, and if you think you would like assistance in this transition, then please contact Dom, or one of the coaches to see how we might be able to assist. - 2 -

New Members If you joined after the beginner s course, then you should have your Archery GB card. If you do not have yours let, please contact Dominic. Associate Member: Julian Bush has recently joined as an associate member in order to improve the times available to practice. Equipment Webbing Stringers The purchase of some webbing stringers has been made, in order that we have a webbing stringer available for each of our beginner s bows. These are easier to use, and have been also introduced to improve safety, when stringing bows. Remember if the limbs are wet, then you will need to dry the limbs before using a stringer, so that there is less slippage. Shooting Shirts The committee is looking into the options of more modern styled club colours shooting shirt. Club colours being Black and Yellow (Gold). At present a potential supplier has a minimum order level of 10 items, for the usual prices, or increased prices for fewer items than 10. The committee wants to move away from the mainly yellow shirts, due to the way in which they seem to attract insects. New for use This Year We have some lovely tabbards, that are going to be available for use the first time this year. This is for people that will be able to assist the Tournament Organisers at our open shoots. If you can assist at the Tournaments then please let the Tournament Organisers know and you may be given permission to wear one of these tabbards. At Tournaments, the Judges need to know who is on the Archery Field and that all people helping who not archers are shooting that day, should identify themselves to the Judges. Insect Repellant If you have not considered it, you may want to consider some insect repellent and to wear long sleeve shirts and trousers, to reduce the chances of insects biting you. Dom ***************** Captan s Corner The first item on the agenda is the two way Western Longbow Champs. Four dozen at 60yds and 4 dozen at 50yds. Something different, the layout is two sets of opposing targets at 65yds apart, with a shooting line at the standard 60yds. Shooting three arrows an end, and then retrieve, sounds like a lot of walking but because of the two sets of targets it s the same as normal. Scoring is also slightly different in that the winner is the archer with most hits not necessarily the highest score, then it s highest score followed by most golds. So if you can get your hands on a Twig and Stick come along and have some fun. To round off the day of traditional style archery we have the Wand shoot. Starting at 10yds 6 arrows each, if you hit you are in - 3 -

the next round which is 15yds. Same again if you hit you are in. This continues until there is only one. Last year it was at 40yds that the winner was declared. MKL Match v Medway Sunday 15 th May we took on Medway Archers away. The weather was fine and their ground is very sheltered so no troublesome wind. A couple of our archers did very well, Ian Lamprell and Malcolm Evans. Ian clipped his handicap by 110 points, and Malc managed a PB by 40 points. Combined with my longbow allowance and Clive and Dave shooting well we won the Pure score, and Carlos was in the handicap team, which we also won. So well done to all. Presidents Trophy On the 22 May we held the presidents Trophy a York/Hereford round, the first of the year. A good turnout of 18 archers and the weather was kind to us. The full results are on the website, but the notable ones were Clive piping Dave by only 4 points for the pure score trophy despite having Two misses, Ian Lamprell winning the recurve trophy, Ian Wilson betting Ron in the Barebow. Of the longbows, with most shooting the Hereford, only Mike Clark taking on the York, Sue Williams was the winner of the Longbow Trophy pure score with a new Club record. I managed to improve my own Hereford club record by 2 points. Two of our newest members shot the Bristol II Mark Price and Greg Jackson, Greg was the winner of the Kevin Dick shield. Our illustrious President Ken Garret was seen on the field as always, nice to see you and Shelia. Well done to all I know there were PB s out there too, and some out shot handicaps. KAF, field shooting We had a 24target unmarked WA round on the 1 st May at Pett Lane. A great time was had by all, some hits some not. Kathy, Mike White joined Ian W and Mike C and Me. Next event is the big one as far as I am concerned; the 32 target National Animal round on the 3 rd July. Some work required on Saturday the 2nd. This is an unmarked double round of 16 targets. This means that 4 new targets will need to be added to the course, some work has been done but there will be two new targets in the new round. General information If anyone needs any information on Archery in Kent try going to KAA Website. Under CLUBS is a list with addresses of all clubs in Kent and other information.. Geoff B All, we are looking into alternative methods of maintaining our ACA schedule of events and external tournament throughout 2016. Geoff Barker has kindly created an outlook schedule which can be imported into either Outlook or Google calendar. Import steps into Google Calendar: 1) Please save the ACA Calendar.csv file to your Desktop - 4 -

2) Navigate to the Google home page WWW.Google.co.uk 3) Load the Calendar app 4) Under My Calendar select the drop down arrow to open to select Settings and Import Calendar. Nine archers have either gained new or higher classifications so far, I'll be awarding their new badges soon. Another quick reminder to all members, please send me details of all rounds recorded at outside venues. I do trawl the results for any local tournament that I'm aware of, but may miss some. It's important for the accuracy of the club's handicaps and classifications that our data set is as complete as possible. Particular congratulations this month go to Geoff Barker and Sue Williams who both set new Longbow club records for the Hereford round at the recent President's Trophy competition. Well done.
