New to Archery and to our club So you're thinking of getting started in the exciting hobby of Archery and Bowhunting? That's great! Here are some things to consider: What sort of archery are you interested in - the 3D target and Bowhunting that our Society promotes or 2D target (aka Olympic Archery)? The equipment requirements of these disciplines varies considerably; some of our members are also members of the local target club What sort of bow interests you the most - Traditional (Longbow, Recurve) or Compound? Are you left or right eye dominant? This will usually determine whether you shoot a left or right handed bow Any bow regardless of type (indeed, all archery equipment) must be suited to the individual archer, and arrows must be matched to the bow. While there are all sorts of great deals on archery equipment available, if you don't know what you need chances are you'll end up with something that isn't appropriate which results in frustration and wasted dollars, potentially even injury! Before rushing out to purchase any equipment we strongly encourage you to come out and see us for some advice as to what gear will suit you. Interested in learning to shoot? We run an introductory course once a month, please email Lee.Harrison@canterburyarchers.co.nz or phone Lee on 027 651 4277 for details. The introductory course will give you the basics of shooting, introduce you to safety on the course and will give you a taster of what 3d archery is like. Intro session cost is $15 per person (Adult/Junior) Those who complete an intro session get 2 free rounds which includes equipment use (part of completing the intro se that normal costs apply. And of course you can then shoot as a member or non member on our course. Interested In Joining Us? We are an inclusive club and welcome new members. If you are interested in coming alng we meet on Sundays for a 10am start, if this is your first time come a little earlier. We do have some rules. If you're new to archery and have never shot before but are interested in seeing what we do then you are welcome to come and walk the course with us. If you have never shot before then you must attend one of our introduction to archery sessions that we hold monthly. If you are interested then have a look at our introductory session Introductory Session page.

If you have shot before and want to try out our club then we do ask that when you attend one of the club officials evaluates your level of skill with a bow before allowing you on our course. We also ask that you read and agree to our club safety information and follow the instructions of the club officials. Normally on your first outing you will be in a group with a senior member of the club. Your first two sessions at the club shoots on the Sundays are free. If you decide that you enjoy the club you can of course join. However you can shoot our Sundays only with us as a guest. There is a green fee for shooting the round. Non - Member - Green Fee $10 with own equipment. If you don't yet have your own equipment you can hire the equipment for an extra $5. The green fee costs are the same for juniors and seniors. Membership Benefits. As a member you are entitled to shoot the course on our member only days. Member only days are Wednesday and Saturday afternoons and Sundays Club Day. All Members Must have their club I.D card on them at all times and have their I.D sticker on their vehicle windscreen otherwise the land owner has the right to move you on.. No If's, No Buts!! This is to protect the interests of the club and the landowners. Also green Fees are reduced. Member - Green Fee $5 with own equipment, $5 extra to hire club equipment. Green fees are the same for juniors and seniors. We also have a very social group of members with access to a wealth of experience and interests in archery and the outdoors. And run and attend competitions throughout the south island and beyond. Membership Costs Senior Membership $90.00 Junior Membership $50.00 Cub Membership $30.00 Family Membership $110.00 (This rate applies only for those domiciled at the same address) Membership is pro-rata, please see the costs below for joining throughout the year. If you are interested in joining you can complete the membership form that is found attached, on our website or come to one of the club days and speak to a club official. We ask that all members read and understand the safety rules of the club that can be found here.

Canterbury Archers Society Inc Course Safety Rules Never point a bow and arrow at another person Never nock an arrow until ready to shoot, at the appropriate shooting peg or line Never shoot an arrow straight up into the air. You can end up hitting another person or yourself. If you are looking for a lost arrow behind a target, always leave your bow leaning against the target face so that it will be seen by other archers coming up. If possible, have one archer from your group stand in front of the target to prevent anyone from shooting Be sure to stay on the marked path while shooting is in progress Keep your equipment well maintained Don't draw the string back except with an arrow on it, and especially, don't release the bowstring with no arrow on it. Doing so is called dry firing and can damage the bow At practice ranges, the only safe place is behind the shooting line Never shoot an arrow until you are positive that no one is in front of you or behind the targets. Conversely, don't stand in front of a bow while it is being shot, even if you are to one side of the shooter. Be aware of your arrows flight path in the event of a missed target Carefully follow the instructions given by the Range Captain or a Club Member Only shoot at the specified targets Report any accident, injury or near miss to a Senior Member, these must also be recorded in the Accident Register Anyone shooting on a non-club day does so at their own risk and must abide by all rules Course Safety_V1.01.doc Page 1 of 1
