June Newsletter 2017 Cascades Cycling Club Newsletter Serving Jackson s Cycling Community for over 30 Years - All Riders - All Abilities Kibby Road Connector: Ready to Ride! Here are two views of the new Kibby Road connector trail that were taken just this week. On the left Frank Thompson is taking a ride on the boardwalk section that crosses over a wetland area. On the right is the view coming from Kibby Road, looking toward the boardwalk. More work is planned this summer for Kibby Road, including a new bike trail that will connect this trail to the trails at the Cascades Park. Fourth Street Trail. if you have been traveling on south Fourth Street by Ella Sharp Park, you have no doubt noticed the trail construction beginning at the New Leaf Park and continuing all the way to the Sharp Park Academy. Look for this trail to be paved and ridable this month! Cascades Cycling Club 1

June Newsletter 2017 Mick Webster Memorial Ride/ Relay for Life Fundraiser June 24 is this year s date for the 9th Annual Mick Webster Memorial Family Bicycle Tour. June Newsletter 2017 Art, Beer & Wine Festival - Bike Give Away Winners! Just look at the smiles on Maggie & John s faces! These folks were the lucky winners of the drawing for a new bike at the June 3rd Art, Beer & Wine Festival! This was the first time we had participated in the Art, Beer & Wine Festival, and we used the opportunity to promote our club and our Pedal and Whine Bike Tour. The festival was very well attended, and the bike give-away was a great way to draw attention to our booth. While we only signed one new club member that day, we did receive 11 paid registrations for Pedal and Whine! I want to give a special shout out to new club and board member Andrew Wellman for getting us this booth after registration had closed. I also want to give special recognition to Adam Kohn of On Two Wheels for offering to donate this new bike and make our give-away possible! Cascades Cycling Club 3

June Newsletter 2017 Carnegie Bike Rally-2nd Annual Tire Change Challenge On May 20 Karen Jo White of the Carnegie Branch of the Jackson District Library hosted the 2nd annual Tire Change Challenge. The Pro division featured the same two tire changers as last year, with Tony Berlanga of P&T Fitness facing off against Chris Kohn, former owner of On Two Wheels. Both competitors were ready for their rematch of last year s event, in which Tony pressed on through the rain and the cold to narrowly win the tiny trophy and bragging rights for the next 12 months. This year s trophy was much larger, and below left you can see how happy Tony is as he thanks Chris for letting him win again this year. Below right Chris is proudly displaying the ribbon he received for being such a good sport! Cascades Cycling Club 5

June Newsletter 2017 More Club News Pedal & Whine Bike Tour As a reminder, the Cascades Cycling Club s Pedal & Whine Tour will be held on August 5 at Sandhill Crane Vineyards. If you haven t picked up your jersey yet, this is your reminder to stop in at On Two Wheels and pick it up. Cycling is a fall sport within the Michigan Special Olympics, and practices for the athletes begin in late July. Volunteers are needed in several capacities, including bringing the bicycles up from the basement at the Special Olympics building on Wildwood, performing some minor maintenance to get them road ready, and assisting the coaches and athletes during practices at the Middle School at Parkside. If you would like to help out in any way, or if you would like more information about how to volunteer, contact Jackson s Special Olympics area director Mark Umlauf at 313-220-1379.
