Spring is here, the Vernal Equinox! Equinox is derived from the Latin words meaning equal night ; our days and nights are equal. The sun rises in due east and sets in due west. I am just thankful that there will be more sunlight, more time on the water, and more time at the club enjoying the many amenities we have. Parents, please do not forget to sign your children up for swimming and sailing. You can find all the forms on the GYC web site. Speaking of sailing, March brought the first Regatta of the season, The Alfonso Sutter. Dawson Doucet sailed in his first Laser Radial race and finished 7th overall-great job Dawson! Thanks to all the other GYC sailors and the race committee who helped and represented us at this event. March also brought us a wonderful St. Patrick s Day Brunch. The food was great and so were the decorations. If you missed it, you missed a real treat. We served 174; the club usage continues to climb. Mark your calendar for this month s activities: Asian Night, April 2nd; Easter Brunch with the Easter Bunny, April 20th; High School Sailing Drawdown, April 12th; and GYC Crawfish Boil, April 19th. Finally a beautiful, sunny day welcomed our GYC Ladies Auxiliary at the March monthly meeting. The Ladies are becoming spoiled by our dining room staff. We enjoyed wine and a special meal of sliced tenderloin and fried catfish with all the trimmings. Our hostesses for the day, Nancy Wheeler, JoAnn Van Atta, Dottie Long, and Sandy Morrison centered each table with a spring container filled with a potted plant. At the conclusion of our meeting the plants were awarded as door prizes. Our special speaker, Mr. Charles Wambolt, presented a program entitled The Benefits of Stretching. We learned the benefits of the different types of stretching and how to perform them correctly to result in the maximum benefits for our bodies. Our annual Easter Egg Hunt will be held on Easter Day, April 20th at 2:00 pm. We encourage your children and grandchildren to bring one dozen filled plastic eggs for hiding. The Easter Bunny will also be there to greet the little ones. Remember to bring your cameras for a photo opportunity. Ages are infant to 8 years old. Bridge winners were Dean Hunter and Margaret Blount. Each received a $10 gift certificate to use at our club. During our business meeting we voted to continue to meet the third Wednesday of each month, so put this on all your calendars. Make a dedicated effort to attend as we have a good time and miss seeing you. Our permanent reservation list is complete, but changes can still be made. The new list will be available at our next meeting. On April 16th our next program will feature The Wonders of Water Color with local coast artist Mary Ann Barkley. Our hostesses will be Dean Hunter, Sue Frentz, Betty Conn Lee, and Elaine Schmidling. Remember to bring a friend to enjoy the day with us. President, Ladies Auxiliary Lynn Ward Borders Hard to believe we are in April already! It is definitely time for warmer weather. Our Mardi Gras Party and St. Patrick s Day Sunday Brunch were both huge successes with over 150 attendees at each event. Be sure to mark your calendar this month for Asian Night, Wednesday, April 2nd- a Chinese Buffet is replacing the normal Pasta Night. On Saturday, April 12th, High School Sailing is having a Drawdown fundraiser so please come out and show your support. Plenty of prizes will be awarded including a chance to win $5,000.00 in CASH! Our annual Crawfish Boil is scheduled for Saturday, April 19th, 5:00pm. Hopefully we will experience a few weeks of warm weather to help drive the cost of live crawfish down. Nevertheless, the party will go on! Live entertainment will be provided by Delta Reign Bluegrass Band. We will follow the Crawfish Boil with Easter Sunday Brunch, April 20th. We will offer two seatings, 11:00am and 1:00pm. Reservations REQUIRED!! Mid April we will revise our daily lunch menu. Keep an eye out for a few changes including: Panini Press Sandwiches, The Reuben, Cuban Sandwich, Grilled Tuna Sandwich, Grilled Tuna Asian Salad, and Freedom Fries back by popular demand. As we gear up for the summer months, the Building and Grounds Committee along with the Pool Committee, are working on two projects. First, they will drain the pool and paint, removing the stains on the east end. Secondly, our Pool Chairman Dean Morrow is working very hard on finding solutions to provide better shade around the pool deck. Our Tiki Bar will open Monday, May 26th and remain open through Labor Day, Monday, September 1st from 11:00am to 6:00pm. Full food and bar services will be available. Lastly, mark your calendars for the upcoming events: Monday, May 5th, Cinco De Mayo Party; Mother s Day Brunch, May 11th; Ship Island Rendezvous, May 24th; and Opening Day Ceremony, June 7th.
