THE HORSES LEADING HORSES THE HORSES LEADING HORSES LONGINES IFHA S WORLD S BEST RACEHORSE RANKINGS 2013 ANGLO-IRISH JUMPS CLASSIFICATION 2013/14 YEAR OF THE FILLIES AND MARES Silviniaco Conti reigns supreme Black Caviar (AUS) [130] and Treve (FR) [130] jointly topped the year-end 2013 Longines World s Best Racehorse Rankings, published by the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities on 6 December 2013. Black Caviar continued her domination of Australian sprinting in 2013, lengthening her unbeaten streak to 25 in the T.J. Smith Stakes (1200m) at Randwick in April and winning all three of her starts in her farewell season. She also became the first Southern Hemisphere horse to top the rankings. Black Caviar shared that top-spot with the remarkable French filly Treve. Treve s best performance came in the Prix de L arc de Triomphe at Longchamp where she took apart a top-class field by a staggering five lengths, with Orfevre back in second. An outstanding eight length victory in the G1 ArimaKinen (Grand Prix) on 22 December 2013 by Orfevre (JPN) vaulted the top Japanese runner to a rating of 129, tying him with Wise Dan (USA) [129] as the co-third rated horses in the world for 2013. Of the top ten rated horses in the World, two were trained in Great Britain, both under the tutelage of trainer Richard Hannon. BLACK CAVIAR (AUS) RANK 1 RATING 130 TRAINED AUS TREVE (FR) RANK 1 RATING 130 TRAINED FR Silviniaco Conti, trained by Paul Nicholls, was named as the highest rated Chaser in Britain and Ireland in 2013/14. The handicappers allocated him a mark of 174 for his memorable victory in the William Hill King George VI Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day when he wore down the Betfair Chase winner Cue Card [172] in a thrilling contest. He also went on to win the Betfred Bowl at Aintree later in the season. In the 15 years of the classifications, Silviniaco Conti ranks at 12th equal among the 3 Mile champion Chasers alongside Looks Like Trouble and See More Business. In the 2 1/2 Mile Chase category the two wide-margin victories by Captain Chris [169] at Kempton and Ascot in January and February were adjudged to be the best performances. However, the most consistent performer at the top level was the 2 Mile champion Chaser, Sire De Grugy [172]. He ran no fewer than seven times, winning on six occasions four of which were at Grade 1 level. It will be interesting in 2014/15 to see how he measures up to Sprinter Sacre, the 2012/13 toprated Chaser and second-highest rated horses in Anglo-Irish Jump Classifications. Silviniaco Conti CHAMPION 3 MILE CHASER RATING 174 TRAINED GB 2013 will long be remembered for two very special undefeated racehorses in BLACK CAVIAR and TREVE. The 2013 LONGINES WORLD S BEST RACEHORSE RANKINGS also marks the first time in official rankings history that the top two racehorses in the world are female. The initiative is helping improve the understanding of the care given to our horses throughout and after their careers in racing. The campaign is supported by the British Horseracing Authority, the Racecourse Association, Racehorse Owners Association, the Professional Jockeys Association, the National Trainers Federation and The Jockey Club. This campaign will help to ensure that everyone understands the importance we all place on horse welfare. We have a great story to tell and this campaign will help us to share it. Paul Bittar, BHA Chief Executive Did you know? Among a population estimated to be around 1 million, racehorses in Britain are among the healthiest and best looked after 2% of horses in the country. The sport employs over 6,000 people to provide constant care and attention for the 14,000 horses in training, providing them with a level of care and a quality of life that is virtually unsurpassed by any other domesticated animal. British Racing is committed to providing the best possible standards of veterinary care for its horses and has invested, via the Horserace Betting Levy Board, over 25 million since 2000 in Veterinary Research and Education. British Racing is open and transparent about the risks involved. Over the last 15 years, the equine fatality rate in British Racing has fallen by onethird (from 0.3% to 0.2% of runners). In recent years the average number of runners per annum is in excess of 90,000. For more information visit: www.thehorsecomesfirst.com Retraining of Racehorses Retraining of Racehorses (RoR), founded in 2000, is British Horseracing s official charity for the welfare of horses that have retired from racing. The charity s aims are to raise funds to help support the charitable retraining and rehoming of former racehorses; and to raise the profile of ex-racehorses to promote their versatility for other equestrian disciplines. RoR provides a nationwide programme of competitions specifically for former racehorses and runs workshops, clinics and other educational activities. RoR also organises parades at Racecourses to demonstrate the adaptability of the former racehorse to the general public. RoR supports four retraining centres whose objectives are to re-school and re-home ex-racehorses. These are: Greatwood, HEROS, Moorcroft Racehorse Welfare Centre, and the Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Centre. key stats By the end of November 2013 the total number of horses registered with RoR was 8,680, an annual increase of 20%. 4,700 horses registered to compete in the RoR Series of Competitions, an increase of 17% in one year. RoR s website had over 93,000 visits and 50,000 unique visitors in the last year. A new regional section was launched, and focused social media marketing helped increase visitors to the site. The scheme is funded by a combination of registration fees and substantial funding from Horserace Betting Levy Board, British Horseracing Authority, Horseracing Ireland, Goffs and Doncaster Bloodstock Sales and Tattersalls. Eligible two and three-year-old horses will race for cash bonuses of 10,000 in races staged throughout Britain and Ireland. The new scheme will operate alongside BOBIS in 2015 before expanding into three-year-old races and replacing BOBIS entirely in 2016. Once fully operational in 2016, Plus 10 will offer more than 5.5 million in bonuses across about 550 races. BOBIS The British Owners and Breeders Incentive Scheme (BOBIS), operational since 2013, will be phased out and cease to operate after the conclusion of the 2015 Flat racing season. The scheme was designed to incentivise owners and breeders to invest in British bred bloodstock and to support British racing. BOBIS offers cash bonuses of up to 10,000 which are split between the owner and breeder of the horse. They aim to grow the number of people who engage with horseracing whilst helping to protect and increase the sport s commercial revenues. Some of their most notable successes this year include: EDUCATION The Kids Love The roadshow toured racecourses this summer and taught hundreds of children about horseracing. Additionally, 1,200 students attended the first ever National Student Raceday and key youth outlets, such as BBC Radio 1 covered the sport for the first time. COVERAGE Ownership was promoted through the leasing of horses to prominent media outlets such as Sky Sports News and the Daily Mail. QIPCO BRITISH CHAMPIONS SERIES GBR manages publicity for the Series which culminates at Ascot s QIPCO British Champions Day the richest race day in Britain and now the world s highest rated race day, on official ratings. More than 650,000 people attended BCS days in 2013 and the Series publicity was valued independently at over 20 million to the sport. GREAT BRITISH RACING INTERNATIONAL Great British Racing International (GBRI) was established by BHA, HBLB, and Racing Enterprises Limited to maintain and grow the economic activity by foreign consumers in the British racing and breeding industries. These valuable series provide vital support for young jockeys and amateur riders in developing and honing in on skills required to be a professional jockey. The Jockey Coaching Programme is designed to further improve the skills of young jockeys and to develop them as all-round sports people. It is managed by the British Racing School on behalf of the BHA. The programme provides coaching and mentoring for 123 apprentice and conditional jockeys under the guidance of 19 qualified coaches across England, Scotland and Wales. Under the optional scheme, jockeys are assigned a coach on completion of their Apprentice or Conditional Licence Course at either the British Racing School or Northern Racing College. The coach then provides advice and assistance to the apprentice or conditional, including practical help with regard to race riding and tactics, theory, fitness and all aspects of building a career as a professional jockey. There are seven series in total, five Flat series (Apprentice Training Race Series, Hands and Heels Apprentice Series, Hands and Heels All Weather Series, Salisbury Apprentice Race Series and Haydock Park Apprentice Race Series) and two Jump series (Conditional Training Race Series and Hands and Heels Jump Series). racing excellence IN 2013: 30 JUMP FIXTURES 10 ALL WEATHER FIXTURES 35 FLAT FIXTURES 103 Apprentice Jockeys took part 113 Conditional Jockeys/Amateur Riders took part APPRENTICES CONDITIONAL JOCKEYS The above figures are monthly averages across 2013 JOCKEY COACHING SCHEME: 123 apprentice and conditional jockeys currently on scheme 19 UK COACHING CERTIFICATE LEVEL 3 QUALIFIED JOCKEY COACHES 84 BHA FACT BOOK 2014 BHA FACT BOOK 2014 85

RECRUITMENT, TRAINING AND EDUCATION COMMUNITY OUTREACH RECRUITMENT, TRAINING AND EDUCATION COMMUNITY OUTREACH Community Outreach British Racing has been undertaking a scoping exercise so as to better understand the enormous breadth of activity the industry undertakes in the communities in which it operates, from educational outreach work to charitable giving, and will be publishing a report on this later in 2014. Racing together Racing Together works to encourage and highlight the important role Racing plays within the communities in which it operates, focusing on the difference it makes to education, society and communities across the country. Our approach to community engagement is captured within the Racing Together values and the four pillars of Racing Together activity are: Racing - Looking after the people and horses who are British Racing. Education Outreach - Enhancing and improving education, and developing potential talent for Racing within schools and our racing communities. Helping Others - Helping those who need our help most. Local life - Bringing together the communities in which we operate. Prince s Trust BHA has worked with the Prince s Trust since 2008 to host Racing Experience Days, providing young people with a special day out and a unique, behind the scenes insight in to the racing industry and what goes into putting on a raceday. Since 2008, hundreds of young people from across the country have taken part in this initiative. In 2013, there were eight Racing Experience Days with 12 young people taking part at each day. KEY STATS Through Racing Together, British Racing invests 6.6 million each year in community engagement activities. British racing donates nearly 6,000 hours or 160 weeks a year to charitable activity, charity events and/or race-days are held at over 80% of our racecourses to raise funds for charitable causes. Through the Racing To School programme British racing helps over 10,000 school children each year, at 250 events, improve their learning by using the Racing environment to teach them elements of the national curriculum. Racing invests 316,000 per annuum in Racing To School, of which 40% comes from fundraising and 60% via HBLB. 88 BHA FACT BOOK 2014 BHA FACT BOOK 2014 89
