LIDO BEACH PICNIC ON JULY 12 TH " What a beautiful day it turned out to be! We had a great turnout for our annual picnic at Lido Beach. Our members came out in full force bringing their family and friends early to get started on the fun. Everyone brought their umbrellas, swimsuits, shovels, mahjong, food to share, etc. to prepare for a day at the beach! Our personal CCLI griller, Peter Gong, started his grilling early so everyone would have their burgers and hot dogs ready to eat as soon as they arrived at the beach. What food there was...burgers, hot dogs, varieties of salads, chips, watermelon, etc. Some of our members even brought their own chicken and shish kebabs to grill. After all the food was devoured, some our families went to the beach to play in the sand and water and soaked up the sun for a nice tan. Other families stayed back at the mushroom, played mahjong or just relaxed and talked. Still other families headed over to the nearby kiddie pool, horseshoes, playground and volleyball courts to enjoy some more fun time. Overall, it was just a beautiful summer day to spend with our families and friends. Definitely something we all need to do more often. Thank you to all our volunteers who helped pull this event together: Jim and Eileen Vogel who reserved the day and the mushroom for us and made multiple trips to the stores to get the food, condiments and paper goods, Helen Chin for working hard on getting the discounted parking for all our members, Stephanie Bartoldus who took the reservations for us, Bob Wong who brought the coolers and multiple other volunteers who worked together to make this such a successful event. THANK YOU!! - Mona Ng Picnic organizers Jim & Eileen Vogel(1 st & 3 rd from left) are joined by Mona Ng, Jonathan, Chris Chiu. Picnickers enjoying Center provided watermelon. Master grill chef Peter Gong (on right) with satisfied customers. Marathon mah jong players in deep concentration. SPEAKERS AND PROGRAMS NEEDED FOR CENTER MEETINGS! Do you know anyone who is extremely interesting or unusual as a speaker and one we would enjoy? Is there an informational program which would be of value to our members? Please let us know! We would like to book speakers and programs interesting to all segments of our membership which includes families with children, our general membership and of course our seniors. If you do, please contact Helen Chin as soon as possible at htchinus@yahoo.com or 1 917 749 6534. 2

It was especially gratifying to read how the young CCLI generation felt about the Center and their experiences through the years. There is a recurring theme that the Center is providing a Chinese identity and a cultural background for them, and has taught them how to spread the Chinese culture through Traditional Dance or Lion Troupe performances. They are leaders in their schools and their communities as well as leaders at CCLI. They are role models for the younger ones that are starting out at the Center. CCLI is very proud of all the scholarship winners. Thanks to Helen Chin, Mona Ng,Janice Chew, Jones Wong, Judy Chan, Ellen Gee, Linda Sau, and Tuey Chung for taking time out from their busy schedules to help with judging all the essays and assisting with the awards and presentation process. CHINESE AMERICAN NIGHT AUGUST 2, 2015 Oh what a night! It was an evening enjoyed by all attendees from the youngest to the oldest. Our preshow lawn activities featured great arts and crafts tables manned by our volunteers who helped children create Chinese scrolls and practice Chinese calligraphy. The Tai Chi class and Ha Kee Sak game created a buzz. Our dedicated and deserving honorees included Shanghai Commercial Bank, Ltd, Timothy Chan, Dr. Jean Lau Chin, Larson Chow, Alex Fong, Denise Lam, Grace Wang, Bob Wong and Wu Guo Chun. The US Veterans Color Guard did us proud. Our talented CCLI Lion and Traditional Dance troupes strutted their stuff with dazzling new routines and dances which drew oohs and ahhs from the audience. The New York Chinese Chorus led by Master Conductor Wu Guo Chun sang favorite folk tunes to the audience s delight. The martial artists of the Wan Chi Ming Hung Gar Institute had everyone riveted to their seats. Soloist Zhang Si Yu sang the nostalgic songs of Hong Kong pop singer Theresa. Eleven-year-old pianist Tiange Huang was one of the hits of the evening, demonstrating his musical virtuosity. Cheers were in order for the Chinese opera excerpt which featured 91-year-old Zhang Zhi Qin dueling with her partner Zhao Gang. Liu Jian, a renowned PRC musician performed an amazing international medley on his accordion. Cao Bao An s Chinese Orchestra featured the award winning PRC erhu musician Lu Lu who made her US debut. Once again, Chinese American Night has created bonds of friendship and cultural understanding fulfilling the Center s mission. We give kudos and heartfelt thanks to all our dedicated members, families and friends for making this year and every year s Chinese American Night a huge success! SENIOR MEETINGS AT THE CENTER: Wednesdays, August 12th and 26th Wednesdays, September 9th and 23 rd 9:30am to 4:00pm 10:30am to 2:30pm Our eager seniors lined up outside the parking lot before 9:30am to get started on their mahjong games. Trays and dishes of food were brought in by our seniors and by lunchtime there was so much cooked food, we needed 2 long tables to lay out everything. Even with over 40 attendees, we still had leftovers for some of our seniors to bring home. Senior club day is a day where our seniors can come together and talk to each other about their past and what they re currently up to. They joke and talk during their sessions of mahjong and work out their brain muscles strategizing their next moves. We have Chinese chess players, mahjong, ping pong, guitar players and singers. If you have a senior at home who might be interested in joining our activities, bring them by. It s a day of activities, good traditional Chinese food and a place they can see old friends and make new ones! Seniors - if you have any recipes that you would like to see printed in our upcoming CCLI cookbook, please use the attached forms to write them up and send it in to us.
