Cheyney Today Founded in 1837 as the Institute for Colored Youth, Cheyney University of Pennsylvania is the oldest of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities in America. The founding of Cheyney University was made possible by Richard Humphreys, a Quaker philanthropist who bequeathed $10,000, one tenth of his estate, to design and establish a school to educate the descendents of the African race. Born on a plantation in the West Indies, Richard Humphreys came to Philadelphia in 1764. Having witnessed the struggles of African Americans competing unsuccessfully for jobs due to the influx of immigrants, he became interested in their plight. In 1829, race riots heightened and it was that year Richard Humphreys wrote his will and charged thirteen fellow Quakers to design an institution:...to instruct the descendents of the African Race in school learning, in the various branches of the mechanic Arts, trades and Agriculture, in order to prepare and fit and qualify them to act as teachers... The school began in Philadelphia as the Institute for Colored Youth and successfully provided free classical education for qualified young people. In 1902, the Institute moved to George Cheyney s farm, 25 miles west of Philadelphia. In 1913, the name was changed to Cheyney State Teachers College; in 1921, the State Normal School at Cheyney; and in 1959, Cheyney State College. In 1983, Cheyney joined the State System of Higher Education as Cheyney University of Pennsylvania. Today, Cheyney University students represent a variety of races, cultures, and nationalities who receive education instruction beyond the vision of Richard Humphreys. Cheyney graduates still become teachers, but students also enter careers such as journalism, medicine, business, science, law, communication, and government service. The university offers baccalaureate degrees in more than 30 disciplines and the master s degree in education. Cheyney University is proud of its more than 10,000 graduates. Well known alumni include the late journalist Ed Bradley of the CBS program 60 Minutes; Robert W. Bogle, publisher and CEO of the Philadelphia Tribune, the oldest newspaper continuously owned an operated by an African American; Gladys Styles Johnston, Chancellor of the University of Nebraska at Kearney; State Representative Michael Horsey who represents the 190th district in Philadelphia County; State Representative Thaddeus Kirkland who represents the 159th district in Delaware County; Robert L. Woodson, Founder and President of the National left for Neighborhood Enterprise (NCNE), Washington, D.C.; Samuel J. Patterson, CEO of Shepard Patterson Systems and Information Consulting Firm; and Ambassador (retired) Joseph M. Segars. 2

2010-11 Cheyney University Men s Basketball Preview Bray to Lead Cheyney Sharif Bray is one of the most prolific scorers in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. Last season, his first back in collegiate ball, Bray averaged 21.7 points per game. Joining Bray in the back court will be Rob Townsend, Bruce Kennedy and Amarildo Matos. All three saw substantial minutes a year ago and will be a key component for Coach Dominique Stephens and his staff if the Wolves are to get back to the PSAC postseason. Last season, the Wolves finished 16-12 overall and 9-5 in the PSAC before falling to East Stroudsburg in the quarterfinals. According to Stephens all three (Matos, Kennedy and Townsend) have really stepped up their game. They all worked very hard over the summer and we should see the fruits of their efforts this season. Matos averaged 4.3 points while shooting 40% from behind the arc. Kennedy averaged over five points a game last season. Townsend shot over 50% from the field averaging 4.9 points per contest. The front court was a shortcoming last season, stated Stephens. With the addition of David Burton, Antonio Boyd, Anthony Juene and Javon Beatty, Cheyney looks to have filled some of the pieces that were previously missing. Burton transferred from the University of the District of Columbia, Boyd from Philadelphia CC and Juene from Holy Family. We decided to keep a lot of players on the roster this year. The players are going to have to battle in practice just to see who dresses for a game, stated Stephens. Bruce Kennedy (10) and Antonio Boyd (1) run the fast break. 3

Dominique Stephens Head Coach Third Year After serving as the interim head coach during the 2008-09 season and leading the Wolves to the PSAC play-offs, Dominique Stephens was named head coach. Stephens is a native of Philadelphia and younger brother of Cheyney University women s head coach and former Temple All-American women s basketball player Marilyn Stephens. Stephens has been part of many championships and great team from Philadelphia and Durham, NC. From past to present, Stephens was a member of the Dobbins High School Football team and 1984 basketball team that consisted of Doug Overton, Bo Kimble, and the late Hank Gathers. That famous hoop squad went onto win the Philadelphia Public League Championship. After high school, Stephens enrolled at North Carolina Central University. As a sophomore, NCCU posted a 26-3 mark. The following year the NCCU won the NCAA Division II title with a 28-4 season. The championship season, Stephens was named to the NCAA Tournament Team. His senior year, the Eagles went 28-5. Stephens was inducted into the North Carolina Central University Hall of Fame in 1995. After college Stephens signed to play professionally in the Philippians Basketball League. In 2000, he was a member of the Lancaster Storm of the Eastern Basketball League. While always dreaming to play in the NBA, Stephens continued his schooling earning his Bachelors of Science in Mathematics from NCCU in 1992. Stephens went on to earn a Masters of Science in Human Services from Springfield College in 2002.
