7 Leslie Petter Memorial Game October 2 nd 2015 Come Help Us Celebrate The Wonderful Life of Leslie Petter Date: Friday October Location: Medway High School Game 1: Medway Jr. Girls vs Strathroy Jr Girls 3:00pm Game 2: Medway Sr. Girls vs Strathroy Sr. Girls 4:30pm Feature Game: Western vs. TBA 7:00pm A Dedicated Teacher, Coach and Mentor On May 11, 2011, Leslie Maureen Petter (BA 86, B.Ed 89) passed away at the age of 47. Leslie was diagnosed with breast cancer one year ago and was very courageous in her second battle with cancer, having survived leukemia and a bone marrow transplant at age 24. A former Mustangs basketball player, Leslie was a devoted and highly respected teacher, athletic director and coach at Medway High School in Arva, Ontario. In her more than 22 years at Medway, her leadership, commitment and dedication has impacted many lives. Even during the last month of her life, Leslie assisted in running an event in London to raise awareness of the importance of organ transplants. It is the wish of Leslie s family and friends that her generosity of spirit be memorialized with the creation of a student award at her alma mater, The University of Western Ontario.
8 A Lasting Legacy for Leslie In establishing the Leslie Petter Women s Basketball Memorial Award we honour the generosity and strength of a gifted coach and powerful teacher, and encourage others in that same spirit of giving to ensure her legacy inspires the next generation of student-athletes. A total of $25,000 in donations will establish a permanent endowment fund that will create an annual award worth $1,000. We turn to our alumni and friends to help us build the endowment fund in memory of Leslie. Gifts are eligible for a tax receipt from The University of Western Ontario and can be paid over five years. The Leslie Petter Women s Basketball Memorial Award will be administered to a full-time, female undergraduate or graduate student in any year of any degree program at Western, including the affiliated University Colleges, who makes a significant playing contribution to the women s basketball team. As per OUA and CIS regulations, an entering student-athlete needs a minimum admission average of 80% and a non-entering student has to maintain an in-course average of 70%. The recipient must also exemplify an excellent work ethic, knowledge of the game, reliability of execution and a tremendous amount of heart. Support for the Western Mustangs Experience The Western Mustangs experience is truly all encompassing linking the academic mission of the University to the larger community and promoting values beyond sport itself. Western s student-athletes serve as role models for youth and as ambassadors for the University. Support for the Leslie Petter Women s Basketball Memorial Award will honour a beloved former player, help recipients with the cost of education, enable Western to compete with other CIS schools in recruiting the best studentathletes, and allow us to continue building strong, competitive teams.
