Striking Out ALS Former Captain of the Boston College Baseball team, Pete Frates was diagnosed with ALS in March of Despite the debilitating effects of ALS, Pete Frates has become one of the loudest and most outspoken advocates for the disease. Named the 2014 Sports Illustrated Inspiration of the Year, he has become the face of ALS and through Team Frate Train, he has engaged the world in the fight to Strike Out ALS. As fellow Eagles, this cause is extremely near and dear to our team. During the summer of 2014, many members of the team participated in the Ice Bucket Challenge, which became a viral sensation. Our team was also fortunate enough to sport Team Frate Train T-Shirts in one of our home games against Georgia Tech this Spring. We re so proud of Pete and all he has done, but we know that the fight is not over Join us in Striking Out ALS!
Playing for a Cause This Spring our team was lucky enough to be able to play for a few great causes. In addition to our classic Pink Game for Breast Cancer Awareness, we debuted purple jerseys for our Crohn s and Colitis Awareness game, which was dedicated to Thomas Gustafson, the late father of our assistant coach Alex Gustafson, who passed away this year from this disease. We play to honor all those who have fought, are fighting, and will fight these diseases.
Where Are They Now? Quick Facts: Major: Finance Jersey Number: #18 Position: Outfield Current Career: Consultant Years Played at BC: 3 Any updates on your life? I have lived in the DC area since graduation. My husband, Steve Jacques (BC, class of 1994) and I will celebrate our tenth anniversary this summer! Despite overlapping by a few years at BC, we did not meet until playing for the Eagles in DC's alumni softball league on the National Mall. We spent close to eleven years in Old Town Alexandria, VA and recently moved to the DC suburb of Vienna. Our criteria for the house was more space, a fireplace, and a backyard big enough for a wiffle ball game. We have been blessed with two amazing and healthy children: Aidan (8) and Norah (6). I am lucky to have two kids who both enjoy being out on the diamond. Aidan plays every sport, but lists baseball as a favorite. I enjoy that we can throw together in the backyard, with no fear of injury, now that he is eight. And after a year of tee-ball, Norah is playing in her first season of coach pitch softball. I am helping to coach her team, and so enjoy sharing my experience with the girls. What are you doing now and how has BC prepared you for that? Balancing academics and softball at BC taught me a few lessons about time management, work ethic, and perseverance. I have had a 17 year career in commercial real estate that has allowed me many opportunities to travel and explore throughout the US. I have spent most of my professional time evaluating, acquiring and asset managing large apartment communities undergoing substantial renovation work. After taking a few years off to be home with my kids, I recently started back as a consultant doing similar work: part time, all from home, and all without travel. It is a nice balance after working full time for so many years! What was your favorite part about BC? It is difficult to pick a favorite! I miss afternoons spent on Bapst lawn, the chimes of Gasson, fly balls, mix tapes, and road trips. BC is a truly special place. I would have to say the ability to spend very unique time with special people who have become lifelong friends and who I can count on for anything. Have you picked up any new hobbies? In my free time, I enjoy trail running, photography and spending time outdoors (and on Cape Cod) with my family. Historically, we have made it to a BC softball game about every other year. This past month we made a weekend trip to Charlottesville to see BC take on UVA. My Norah had the wonderful opportunity to spend the first game in the dugout with the BC team. Thanks to all of you for making her experience such a memorable one!
Heading For Home Our team wrapped up the year with a few fun activities: Pen Pal Picnic in the Plex, Faculty & Staff Appreciation Game, dressing up for the All Sports Banquet, and kicking cancer s butt with Cycle for Survival. Check it out below!
Thank You! To Our Seniors: Chelsea Dimon and Annie Sommers, we will miss you! These two seniors have provided our young team with leadership and experience this season. Since their freshmen year, they have been instrumental in helping the program grow to where it is today. While we are sad that their time at the Heights is coming to an end, we can t wait to see what the future brings for them! You will always be welcome on the Heights once an Eagle, always an Eagle! To Our Bat Girls: You girls were great this season! Thank you for bringing your smiles and hard work to our games. It was a blast having you on our team this Spring and we look forward to having you back as future Eagles!
