SAILING ASSOCIATION OF MARCO ISLAND P. O. BOX 61, MARCO ISLAND, FL 34146 www.samisailor.org July 2016 COMMODORE S CABIN Ken Bardon, Commodore ADVICE FROM THE VICE Phil Litow, Vice Commodore Hi from your "SNOWBIRD COMMODORE!" I was thrilled to read about the wonderful SAMI turnout for both the July 4th parade and picnic. Lil and I are planning our return to Marco in time for the SAMI birthday party September 15th. So far our summer has been very interesting. I have had my captain's license for over thirty years, and I am finally getting to use it in my retirement. I've had three jobs since our return to Long Island, the most exciting being a delivery back from Bermuda to the Long Island Sound. The picture below, taken in Hamilton prior to our departure, shows the crew for our six day journey back which was a wonderful sailing experience. The boat was a C&C 40 named Glim. Fellow SAMI members, Bob and Lorelei Diamond, sailed over on their boat, Westerleigh, to Oyster Bay, and joined us for part of this holiday weekend. Later this month, we plan to drive up to the Adirondack Mountains to visit other SAMI members, Rob and Donna Reiley at their lake cottage. In August, we will cruise on Moonbeam...out east to the Hamptons, Block Island and Newport. Lil and I hope you all enjoy the rest of the summer, and we look forward to seeing you all to celebrate SAMI s 47th birthday!! Hi Sami sailors, Our June activities have essentially been social and culinary. On the 11th about sixteen SAMI members attended a Meet and Greet at the Marco Island Yacht Club. It was very nice and the setting and hors d'oeuvres were lovely. Six of us had made reservations for dinner but management was very accommodating when we wanted to increase to eight. It should be noted that they order food to meet the number of reservations and have only one sitting per night. Somehow they overlooked us a bit after we sat down and it took almost two hours until we were served. Management made amends by comping us with several excellent desserts. The reviews of our food were: meat loaf was good but some found it salty; the 5 oz. filet was very good; braised ribs were good but a tad salty; salmon was slightly dry but tasty; burger was good. I've included the reviews and some pictures of the menu (see page 6) because some of our members requested it before they made their own reservations. Remember, the MIYC has invited SAMI members to have dinner/enjoy happy hour through September 30th; you just need to identify yourself as a SAMI member when you make your reservation and wear your SAMI nametag when you go. On the 16th we had a very nice turnout as twenty-three showed up at the Philly Grille where we were well taken care of, the food was good, and a good time was had by all. SAMI's 4th of July celebration was terrific! Thanks to Jae for her work at getting out notices of the 4th of July boat parade. Lady M, Rhapsody, Broad Reach, Luna Blue II, and Dot Dun paraded past Residents Beach and the Marriot on the Gulf and were greeted with cheers when horns were blown and Luna Blue II blasted patriotic music. The cookout at Micki and Gilles home later that afternoon was attended (continued on page 2)

CRUISIN ABOUT Micki Gobeil, Rear Commodore June 16, 2016 "DON'T RAIN ON MY PARADE" Remember this saying? Well, it didn't rain even though we could see the storm clouds billowing and hear the thunder roar in the near distance. We were blessed with sunshine all of the day here in Paradise. SAMI'S annual Independence Day boat parade from Factory Bay to the Marriott left shore with a fleet of five vessels, lead by Lady M, Rhapsody, Luna Blue II, Broad Reach and Dot Dun. Each boat proudly flew the American Flag and many colorful smaller flags. We want to thank all the captains and their crews for a safe, fun and inspirational cruise. How proud we felt to pay tribute to our Nation on this day and to represent SAMI. The SAMI ladies that were present are to be commended for all the delicious, traditional 4th of July dishes they provided for the picnic that followed the cruise. However, we were reminded that in July it is hot and humid enough to melt the icing on the cup cakes just ask Jae Kellogg if this is true. Other than the sweltering heat, July 4th is a day to be remembered here in PARADISE where we were blessed with sunshine, plenty of food, friendship, good health and most of all our Nation s FREEDOM and INDEPENDENCE. Already we are planning and looking forward to the next SAMI event which is the annual picnic at Saranzan Park on August 13th. So mark your calendars! I will be sending out a sign up sheet soon for the food the ladies volunteer to provide. Continue to enjoy your summer in happiness and good health and thank you for continuing to be actively involved with SAMI. 642-4241 or mickigo@embarqmail.com ADVICE FROM THE VICE (continued from page 1) by 32, including one new member and two potential members. It was a great turnout, the food that was contributed was wonderful, and Micki's patriotic trivia quiz put an exclamation point on a wonderful Independence Day. We can't thank her and Gilles enough for their efforts and hospitality. Here's wishing a good summer for everyone. I hope to see you at the annual picnic on August 13th. capnlit@yahoo.com or 774-2669 2
