Her first career double-double also came against the Broncs this season, when she went for 13 points and 10 rebounds on Jan. 5. CHEVY DRIVES TOWARD 1,000 As of the Feb. 19 game against Rider, Chevannah Paalvast sits at 943 career points, 57 shy of the 1,000-point plateau. With at least four games remaining, Paalvast would have to average 14.25 points per game in that time to reach 1,000. Through 28 games this season, she s averaged 13.3 points per game. SARA TEARS DOWN 16 BOARDS Sara English grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds, six on the offensive glass, Feb. 16 at Quinnipiac. Her previous career high was 14, established earlier this year against Manhattan. HEARTBREAKER AT HYNES Monmouth used brilliant halfcourt defense to come all the way back from a 15-point second-half deficit at Iona s Hynes Athletic Center on Feb. 14. Monmouth trailed by 15 with 15 minutes remaining in regulation and whittled away at the lead until a 10-0 run put the Hawks on top, 57-56. Monmouth again took the lead, 59-58, on two Danica Dragicevic free throws with 10 seconds left, but Aleesha Powell went coast to coast to score the game-winning bucket with 3.5 seconds left. Monmouth held Iona to 22.2 percent (6-27) shooting in the second half. CHEVY S ACROSS THE BOARD Chevannah Paalvast led the Hawks in points (20), rebounds (5), assists (4), blocks (2) and steals (3) at Iona on Feb. 14. She did her damage on 7-18 shooting from the floor and 5-for-5 from the charity stripe. HAWKS PLAY 4KAY Since Head Coach Jenny Palmateer took over the reigns of the Monmouth women s basketball team, Play 4Kay Day has traditionally taken on greater meaning. Palmateer both played and coached a combined 14 years under Kay Yow, the longtime North Carolina State Head Coach for whom the cause is named. Play 4Kay is a 501 (c)(3) charitable organization committed to being a part of finding an answer in the fight against women s cancers through raising money for scientific research, assisting the underserved and unifying people for a common cause. SWARMING DEFENSE Monmouth employed a swarming, full-court press against Saint Peter s and forced a season-high 27 turnovers on Jan. 30. The turnover margin resulted in a 20-8 edge in points off turnovers in the 11-point victory. Chevannah Paalvast led the Hawks, offensively and defensively, with 18 points and four steals. Sara English added 11 points and three blocks, while Mia Hopkins had 12 points and seven rebounds. ENGLISH EMERGES Having compiled three double-doubles in her sophomore season, everyone in West Long Branch knew Sara English had the ability to put up big numbers. In the Hawks 20th and 21st games of the season and after sitting out the prior contest due to injury, English s potential became a reality with a career-high 19 points and 10 rebounds against Iona on Jan. 24 and 19 points and 14 rebounds on Jan. 26 against Manhattan. Included in the 14-rebound effort were seven caroms on the offensive glass. HOPKINS HONORED Mia Hopkins became the second Monmouth freshman to be named MAAC Rookie of the Week on Jan. 27. The honor came after she averaged 9.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.5 assists, while shooting 42.1 percent (8-19), including 42.9 percent (3-7) from long range in the Hawks 1-1 week. Against Manhattan, Hopkins tied her season high with 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting, including 3-for-4 from beyond the three-point arc.

10 TIMES 10 Sara English and Jenny Horvatinovic each compiled their first double-digit scoring games of the season against Iona on Jan. 24, giving Monmouth 10 players with a double-digit scoring game this season. Chevannah Paalvast, Jasmine Walker, Shira Shecht, Kasey Chambers, Helena Kurt, Jamiyah Bethune, Mia Hopkins and Danica Dragicevic have also finished a game in double figures. EASY SHOTS, EASY ASSISTS Monmouth shot a season-high 52.5 percent (31-59) from the floor against Manhattan on Jan. 26, in large part because of high-percentage shots set up by a season-high 21 assists. Monmouth shot 62.1 percent (18-29) with 11 assists in the second half. Sara English led the way with 8-of-12 shooting from the floor, while Mia Hopkins was efficient at 5-of-8. Chevannah Paalvast also went 6-of-13 from the floor. Kasey Chambers had a solid all-around effort, shooting 4-of-8 to go along with a career-high six assists, while Jasmine Walker shot 3-of-6 with four assists. Paalvast also handed out five assists. FURIOUS COMEBACK FALLS SHORT VS. IONA Monmouth went on a furious 23-3 run to cut a 24-point deficit with 9:22 left in the second half to three with less than two minutes to play against leagueleading Iona on Jan. 24. Jenny Horvatinovic scored nine points in the run, while Jasmine Walker and Kasey Chambers added five points apiece. Iona eventually held on for a 86-77 victory. TALE OF TWO HALVES Monmouth led, 22-12, at the half at Niagara on Jan. 19, holding the Purple Eagles to an opponent season-low of 12 points in the first half on 18.2 percent (4-22) shooting with 17 turnovers. Niagara then shot 38.7 percent (12-31) in the second half and Victoria Rampado scored 21 of her 23 points on 8-of- 11 shooting in the latter stanza. Niagara also committed just six second-half turnovers. DOUBLE DIGITS IN THE SCORING COLUMN 10 or more Hawks have entered the scoring column on eight occasions this season, including three straight Jan. 10-17. 10 Hawks scored against Yale in the season opener, before turning the trick again at Delaware and No. 1 UConn. 10 entered the scoring column again Jan. 10 against Canisius, before a season-high 11 scored at Siena. More recently, 10 scored at Canisius on Jan. 17 and against Iona on Jan. 24. IF WE CAN GET THAT SHECHT EVERY GAME... Shira Shecht scored 13 points and added a career-high nine rebounds in the Hawks 64-49 victory at Siena on Jan. 13. She did her damage on 5-of-6 shooting, including 1-of-2 from long range and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line. She also dished out two assists in 22 minutes. HOPKINS HITS FOR 13 Mia Hopkins scored a season-high 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting, including a three-pointer on her only attempt from long range, in 17 minutes at Siena on Jan. 13. KASEY KONNECTING Kasey Chambers scored a career-high 14 points on 6-of-13 shooting off the bench against Rider on Jan. 5. The sophomore point guard also grabbed three steals. WALKER COMING INTO HER OWN After showing signs of the potential to become a major contributor for the Hawks early in the season, Jasmine Walker seems to have turned potential into reality. In a four-game stretch, Dec. 31-Jan. 10, Walker averaged 11.5 points and 8.0 rebounds per game, while shooting 51.4 percent (19-37) from the floor and 35.7 percent (5-14) from long range. Included in the production was Walker s first-career double-double in which she had a career-high 13 points and 10 rebounds against Rider on Jan. 5, before upping her career-high to 14 points along with nine rebounds against Canisius on Jan. 10. Monmouth defeated Canisius, 64-56, in its own Kid s Day on Jan. 10 at the MAC. The Hawks then quieted a crowd of almost 2,000 kids on Jan. 13 at Siena, defeating the Saints, 64-49. Monmouth took its largest lead of the season (18) into the locker room at Siena, before extending the figure to 29 in the second half. The Hawks ended the stretch with a 60-52 defeat at Canisius in front of almost 2,200 screaming kids on Jan. 17. Monmouth also enjoyed a 52-41 win on Kid s Day at Saint Peter s on Jan. 30. HAWKS ON A HIGH AFTER ACHIEVING A LOW Monmouth turned the ball over a season-low nine times, despite playing an extra five minutes in an overtime victory over Fairfield. As a result, the Hawks took an 18-8 edge in points off turnovers for the game. EVERYBODY CONTRIBUTES Monmouth got solid contributions from several players in its overtime victory over Fairfield on Jan 3. Always solid, Chevannah Paalvast scored a season-high 23 points to go along with two blocks and two steals. Jasmine Walker scored nine points, including five in overtime, and grabbed a career-high nine rebounds. Jamiyah Bethune, continuing to show a flare for the dramatic, scored eight points, including the game-tying bucket in regulation and a pair of free throws to put the game on ice. Sara English also added six points, 10 rebounds, four assists and two blocks in her return to the starting line-up. Helena Kurt chipped in with six points, three rebounds, three steals and two assists, while Jenny Horvatinovic also scored six points on a solid 3-of-5 shooting. ALL-AROUND EFFORT Senior wing Chevannah Paalvast had perhaps her best all-around effort of the season on Dec. 31 at Manhattan. She scored 21 points, including the Hawks first 12 points of the game, on 8-of-14 shooting. She also added nine rebounds, four on the offensive glass, and five assists, while turning the ball over just once. INTERNATIONAL STARTING FIVE The Hawks starting line-up for four-straight games (Dec. 21-31) featured five players from five different countries, including four different continents. Point guard Helena Kurt hails from Sweden (Europe), while Serbian center Danica Dragicevic also represents Europe. Forwards Shira Shecht (Israel, Asia) and Chevannah Paalvast (New Zealand, Australia) and guard Jasmine Walker (USA, North America) gave the Hawks a truly international feel from the opening tip. MY OH JAMIYAH Sophomore Jamiyah Bethune made a major impact in a short amount of time Dec. 29 against Saint Peter s. After not seeing the court in the first 29 minutes of play, Bethune played the final 11 minutes and scored a team-high 14 points. Included in the point production was the game-tying three-pointer with 26 seconds left in regulation as part of a comeback from 16 points down with 10 minutes remaining. WINDEX WOMEN The Hawks grabbed a season-high 52 rebounds, including 16 on the offense glass, Dec. 22 against Eastern Michigan. Christina Mitchell led the way with seven boards, while five different Hawks had two offensive rebounds apiece. A LITTLE HELP HERE... Chevannah Paalvast scored more than 18 points in each four straight games, including 20 points in a win over Maryland Eastern Shore on Dec. 3, for an average of 18.5 points per game from Dec. 1-21. The New Zealander shot 50.8 percent (31-61) over the span. A BEVY OF CHEVY Chevannah Paalvast scored 14 of her 20 points in the second half as Monmouth defeated Maryland Eastern Shore on Dec. 3. The senior made 6-of-13 attempts from the field, including a pair of three-pointers, in addition to two blocks and a steal on the defensive end in the second half.

INTERNATIONAL TEAM; NO DUTCH GIRL IN PAINT? The Hawks did work in the paint on Dec. 3 against Maryland Eastern Shore, to the tune of a 42-40 edge on the glass and a 36-14 advantage in points in the paint. Monmouth outrebounded a team for the first time all year, resulting in its first win. HALL OF FAME PERFORMANCE Chevannah Paalvast scored 18 points on 8-of-14 shooting to earn Basketball Hall of Fame Women s Challenge Team MVP honors against Bowling Green on Dec. 1. THAT S JAZZY Jasmine Walker posted career highs of 13 points, six rebounds and two steals against Bowling Green on Dec. 1. SCORING AT THE POINT Point guards Helena Kurt and Kasey Chambers both enjoyed career-high point totals against St. Bonaventure on Nov. 22. Kurt connected for 13 points, including a five-consecutive points to tie the game at 36-36 in the second half, while Chambers scored seven-straight points to give Monmouth a 43-41 lead. The freshman Swede scored a season-high 13 points on 4-of-7 shooting, including 2-of-4 from long range, to go along with two assists against St. Bonaventure in 24 minutes. She then added a team-high nine points and two assists in 26 minutes against No. 1 Connecticut and 10 points and a season-high four assists on 4-of-6 shooting (2-of-4 3-pt. FG) in a season-high 29 minutes. She shot 48.0 percent, including 37.5 percent from long range and 83.3 from the free-throw line on the week. Helena Kurt scored a team-high nine points, while Jenny Horvatinovic added a season-high eight points and six rebounds. Sophie Beaudry also added six points for the Hawks, while Mia Hopkins had a team-high two steals. Jamiyah Bethune added two points and two rebounds, while India Dotson scored on her first-career field-goal attempt in her first-career game played. IF ONLY THE GAME WAS 20 MINUTES LONG... The Hawks led at the half in three of their four games this season, but sported an 0-4 record through the first four games this season. They led 32-29 over Yale in the season opener, 32-26 against Wagner on Nov. 14 and 23-22 over St. Bonaventure on Nov. 22. SHIRA SCORES After establishing a new career high with 13 points in the season opener against Yale, Shira Shecht upped her career high to 20 points at Delaware. The senior sharpshooter nailed four of her first five three-point attempts against the Blue Hens. STRONG SECOND HALF Following a first half in which Delaware outscored the Hawks, 41-23, Monmouth responded with a 14-2 run to start the second half and close to within six. For the half, Monmouth outscored Delaware, 35-31. CHEVY S DOUBLE DOUBLE-DOUBLE Chevannah Paalvast compiled her first career double-double with 22 points and a career-high 10 rebounds, Nov. 14 vs. Wagner. The senior wing s previous career high in rebounds was nine. She followed up that effort with her second double-double next time out at Delaware with 16 points and 10 rebounds. 10 SCORE 10 of the 11 players who saw the court in the Nov. 9 season opener against Yale scored for the Hawks. Shira Shecht scored a careerhigh and team-high 13 points, while Jasmine Walker added eight points. Mia Hopkins scored seven points in her collegiate debut, while fellow freshman Helena Kurt had six. Chevannah Paalvast chipped in with five, while Kasey Chambers, Christina Mitchell and Danica Dragicevic had four points apiece. Sophie Beaudry rounded out the scoring with two points. HITTING THE BOARDS HARD Monmouth grabbed 48 rebounds against Yale, including 12 from Sara English, tying her career-high. Freshman Mia Hopkins was also impressive crashing the boards, grabbing five of her nine rebounds on the offensive glass in just 16 minutes. Danica Dragicevic, Christina Mitchell and Chevannah Paalvast also made strong contributions on the glass with five rebounds apiece.

KEEPING TURNOVERS DOWN KEY FOR MU Monmouth is 3-14 when committing more turnovers than its opponent. Meanwhile, MU is 3-7 when turning it over the same amount or fewer times than its opponent. HAWKS FLY TO NEW NEST Monmouth University Athletics joined the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) in all sports except football and women s bowling beginning July 1, 2013. The Hawks football team will join the Big South beginning in the 2014 season, while the women s bowling team will compete as an independent. Monmouth joins Canisius, Fairfield, Iona, Manhattan, Marist, Niagara, Quinnipiac, Rider, Saint Peter s and Siena as full members of the MAAC. BIG INCOMING CLASS IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE Jenny Palmateer has brought in seven new players and has an eighth player who redshirted her true freshman year a season ago. But quantity isn t the only big thing about the incoming class. Led by a pair of 6-foot-4 post players in Sophie Beaudry and Christina Mitchell, the Hawks scholarshipped newcomers are on average, almost three inches taller than the graduated players they are replacing. In addition to Beaudry and Mitchell, guard/forward Jenny Horvatinovic (5-foot-11) and guards Mia Hopkins (5-foot-10), Sarah Olson (5-foot-8) and Helena Kurt (5-foot-5) enter the fold. Meanwhile, the post players the Hawks lost to graduation were 6-foot and 5-foot- 10, while also losing guards at 5-foot-8, 5-foot-7 (two) and 5-foot-5. Redshirt freshman India Dotson (6-foot) and sophomore walk-on transfer Jamiyah Bethune (5-foot-8) from Penn State also add significant size to the team. RETURNING CAST With six seniors and four starters graduating, Monmouth returns only seven players who saw action last season, led by Preseason All- MAAC Third Team selection Chevannah Paalvast. The New Zealand native averaged 11.0 points and 4.9 rebounds in 2012-13 and will take on a greater leadership role this season. Senior Shira Shecht offers good size and versatility as a 6-foot forward who can step out and shoot the three-pointer. Junior Sara English was a double-double threat off the bench, scoring in double figures six times, while grabbing 10 or more rebounds on three occasions. Sophomores Kasey Chambers, Danica Dragicevic and Jasmine Walker are each vying for starting roles after seeing limited minutes in reserve roles as freshmen. Sophomore Amanda Offenback will also challenge for increased playing time off the bench. HAWKS FLY INTERNATIONALLY Monmouth will have an international feel this season, featuring players from six different countries and four continents. Europe is represented by Serbian sophomore Danica Dragicevic and Swedish freshman Helena Kurt, while New Zealander Chevannah Paalvast represents Australia. Senior Shira Shecht represents both the country of Israel and continent of Asia. 11 Americans and Canadian freshman Sophie Beaudry represent North America.
