When questioned regarding the disappointing performance rider T Angland stated that his mount was not the best to begin and when being crossed by Tell No Tales in the early stages was inclined to over race. He added that Ruling Symbol raced greenly, particularly when placed under pressure and although his mount suffered interference inside the 200m it was commencing to give ground at this point. He further added in his opinion the colt would derive benefit from today's race day experience. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Estijaab Shifted out on jumping. When placed under pressure in the straight was inclined to race greenly and proved difficult to ride out. Premier Rose - rider J Taylor pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that near the 200m she permitted her mount, which was inclined to lay out, to shift out when not clear of Ruling Symbol resulting in Ruling Symbol being taken out across the running of Premier Rose which lost its running and had to be steadied. Further, she continued to permit her mount to shift out near the 150m resulting in Ruling Symbol having to be checked. J Taylor's license to ride races was suspended for a period to commence on Thursday, 25 January 2018 and to expire on Wednesday, 31 January 2018, on which date she may ride. Patron Black from the 600m raced wide and without cover Near the 50m was hampered when crowded by River Bird J Taylor which shifted out whilst being ridden along when not sufficiently clear. 3 RACE 2: Nelune Foundation Handicap 1300m Paret - slow to begin. Rider G Schofield stated his mount travelled well at the rear of the field and making the home turn commenced to improve behind D'Argento. He said when that runner improved to the inside he then elected to shift out to ensure he secured clear running. However, at this point, Paret did not sprint, which resulted in the colt losing touch with the field in the early part of the straight. He further added under pressure in the straight Paret laid in and in his view would derive a fitness benefit from today's run. A post-race veterinary examination found the colt to be 1/5 lame in the off foreleg. Mr L Prior representing trainer Mr C Waller stated Paret had pleased the stable leading into today's race and had displayed no soundness issues. He concurred with the rider that Paret would derive a fitness as it only had one barrier trial leading into today and was first up over 1300m. Mr Prior undertook to report back to the Stewards in the day subsequent and he was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to the colt's next race start. D'Argento from its wide barrier was steadied and shifted in behind runners shortly after the start. Medaille - when questioned regarding the disappointing performance, rider T Clark advised due to the perceived slow tempo he elected to lead on the mare where it travelled comfortably. He stated under pressure in the straight Medaille failed to respond to his riding and in his opinion this was due to the track conditions which he felt had commenced to firm during the day. He further added in his view Medaille is better suited when ridden with cover. A postrace veterinary examination revealed the mare was slow to recover. Trainer Mr J Cummings advised that Medaille had experienced no issues leading into today's race and concurred with the views of T Clark. He added trainer Mr R Ollerton had expressed a view that it would be preferable for the gelding to improve inside horses as he felt the racing pattern of today had advantaged runners closer to the rail. He said that after following Straturbo in the early stages, he contemplated shifting to follow Boss Lane with a view to coming to that runner's outside on straightening, however given his instructions he elected to improve between runners soon after straightening and followed Memes. App. McDougall further stated that Memes did not initially improve as he anticipated and he was held up on the heels of that runner before then shifting to the inside in an attempt to secure clear running. He said that over the final 100m, when badly held up, he attempted to improve to the inside of Memes where there was not sufficient room, which resulted in Royal Tudor being badly held up and not being tested until the finish of the race. Trainer Mr R Ollerton agreed that in his instructions he indicated the inside going was superior and, as he felt Royal Tudor would have an early position on the rail, he suggested to App. McDougall to make his run to the inside as he anticipated the field would spread in the straight. Stewards advised App. McDougall that, whilst they acknowledged he had endeavoured to ride to his instructions, given the circumstances of the race his best option would have been to come to the outside of Boss Lane making the home turn. Mr Ollerton was advised that particularly when issuing instructions to apprentice jockeys he should issue instructions that provide the rider with an alternative should the preferences not be available.
