STEWARDS REPORT Newcastle Jockey Club NEWCASTLE RACECOURSE Sunday 19 November 2017 Weather: Fine Track: Good (4) Rail: Out 5m from 1600m to 400m, out 2.5m remainder STEWARDS: D M Greer (Chairman), R W Livingstone, D L Carr and cadet C K McIntosh (mkm) LATE RIDING CHANGES: As J Collett was indisposed due to aggravating a shoulder injury yesterday, the following rider substitutions were approved: Race 1 A Bullock on Oakfield Private Race 4 B Shinn on Miss Allspice Race 6 A Gibbons on Heat Haze Race 8 J Penza on Zither RACE 1 XXXX Gold Metro & Prov Maiden Plate 1400m Thinking Ahead slow to begin. Suki Moochi missed the start (2L). Oakfield Private When questioned regarding his riding in the early and middle stages, A Bullock stated that he was instructed to try and find cover as the gelding had led at its two prior starts and failed to finish its race off. He explained that in the early stages when Ausbred Dream and Birdsong held their position to his inside he was unable to find cover and from that point Oakfield Private commenced to race fiercely despite his efforts to make his mount settle. He said after being crossed by High Point approaching the first turn Oakfield Private was left racing wide without cover and continued to overrace badly. RACE 2 Coca-Cola-Cola Maiden Handicap 1600m Liasion to be ridden further forward; settled on pace. Corinth reared in the barriers, was examined by the club's veterinary officer and passed suitable to race. When questioned in relation to the performance, B Shinn explained that he positioned his mount worse than midfield with cover in accordance with his instructions where his mount travelled well. He said after the tempo was slow in the middle stages he commenced to improve his position approaching the 600m in an attempt to shift to the outside of Teoagogo, however when Bellabrook shifted that runner wider, he was obliged to shift back to the inside and trail Bellabrook into the straight.. He explained that he was able to apply full pressure to the gelding on straightening however it was one paced in the run to the finish and was disappointing. A post race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Havazac slow to begin. Korean slow to begin. Strome began awkwardly and shifted out abruptly resulting in its rider apprentice J Van Overmeire becoming unbalanced.
Teoagogo rounding the turn near the 500m was hampered and taken wider by Bellabrook which shifted out. Bellabrook laid in when placed under pressure in the straight. RACE 3 Newcastle Equine Centre Benchmark 71 Handicap 900m Declaration of correct weight was delayed to enable G Ryan, trainer of second placed All Carisma, to view the official photo finish. When he was satisfied that the judge's numbers were correct as semaphored, correct weight was declared. Run Sally Run slow to begin. Larlabrook slow to begin. Cohesion raced wide without cover throughout. Di's Diamond was held up over the final 75 metres and unable to be tested to the finish. All Carisma raced wide without cover throughout. When questioned regarding his riding in the straight, apprentice J Van Overmeire explained that after being initially able to apply the whip in his left hand approaching the 200m, All Carisma commenced to lay in and shift ground. He explained that he then rode his mount along hands and heels for the remainder of the event. He added he was reluctant to pull the whip through to his right hand as he did not want to lose momentum when All Carisma in his opinion was responding to his hands and heels riding. RACE 4 IGA Liquor Maiden Handicap 900m Snippet Assured was hampered on jumping by Miss Allspice which shifted out. Raced wide without cover throughout. Kandos Tiger slow to begin. Mizzone near the 700m Mizzone and Ibanez were briefly crowded by Olifants which shifted in when not quite clear before being corrected by its rider J Penza. Miss Allspice when questioned regarding the performance rider B Shinn explained that although he was caught wide racing without cover, the mare however travelled well in the run. He said that when he placed his mount under pressure it was disappointing in its failure to finish its race off. He added that in his opinion Miss Allspice would derive benefit from today's first up run and by stepping up in distance. Westover raced wide without cover throughout. RACE 5 Tyrrel's Wines Class 1 & Maiden Plate 1850m Chilly Cha Cha stewards opened an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding how the towel rider apprentice J Overmeire, rider of the equal dead-heater for first Chilly Cha Cha, had been using to wipe sweat from the the horse's neck in the barriers became entangled in his right boot for the remainder of the race. The weight of the towel was 300 grams. Apprentice J Van Overmeire weighed out for this race in accordance with the rules and even allowing for the weight of the towel being included in the weigh in, apprentice J Van Overmeire would still have weighed in well within legitimate guidelines as per AR 145. Apprentice J Van Overmeire advised that as is normal practice, once he finished utilising the towel after first being loaded into the barriers he felt that he removed it from the horse's neck and placed it over the back of the barriers, however in a review of the film it evident that that was not the case and the towel had been entangled on his boot on jumping. Apprentice J Van Overmeire pleaded guilty to a charge under AR175(k) in that he failed to remove this towel properly after being loaded in the barriers which resulted in it being carried throughout the duration of the race. Apprentice J Van Overmeire was fined $300. Making the first turn commenced to hang out towards the heels of Dordogne and as a result blundered after striking the heels of that runner. Hung out when placed under pressure over the final 200 metres and proved difficult to ride out.
Aurora Rose raced wide without cover until near the 1000m. Near the 200m was restrained away from the heels of Chilly Cha Cha (J Van Overmeire) which shifted out when not clear. Apprentice J Van Overmeire was told to exercise more care. Rider R King reported that in her opinion the mare did not appreciate today's firm track conditions. Chief Kidder near the 75m was hampered when crowded by Chilly Cha Cha which shifted out. raced wide without cover for the majority of the race. Mister Rossa - J Adams reported that in his opinion the gelding did not appreciate today firm track conditions. Trainer B Smith expressed disappointment with the performance and reported that a veterinary examination including an endoscopic examination on return to the stables did not show any abnormalities. Mr Smith advised that he would report back on the results of blood tests in the days subsequent. Fantastic Man When questioned rider A Hyeronimus advised that after he was crossed near the 1000m by Aurora Rose Fantastic Man commenced to overrace and as a result became awkwardly placed on that horse's heels and shifted wider. He added that Fantastic Man then raced wide thereafter and in a fast run race this is the main reason why the horse weakened in the straight. A post race veterinary examination of the horse revealed it to be showing an anomaly with its gait. Stable representative R Hartney was advised that a veterinary clearance must be produced prior to Fantastic Man's next race start. RACE 6 Hammersley Australia Maiden Plate 1200m High Flight on jumping shifted out abruptly and lost ground (5L). Stable representative C Houlgatte was advised that a warning would be placed on the record of the filly. Nicoya was hampered on jumping when crowded by Shovano. Shovano shortly after the start was steadied when crowded by Emperor Harada (A Skerritt) which shifted in when not fully clear. Apprentice A Skerritt was advised to exercise more care. Big Call overraced in the early and middle stages and near the 800m was checked away from the heels of Emperor Hararda. Heat Haze raced wide without cover throughout. Balaha was inclined to lay out in the early part of the straight. Casino Girl was eased down by its rider in the straight. A post race veterinary examination revealed the filly to have bled severely from both nostrils and to be displaying cardiac arrhythmia. After interviewing trainer G Ryan the matter was adjourned to seek advice from the owners relative to the horse's racing future. In the interim Mr Ryan was advised that Casino Girl would now incur the mandatory three months ban from racing and a veterinary clearance, including the results of an ECG must be furnished. RACE 7 Komatsu Coal Miners' Cup Class 2 Handicap 1300m Show 'em overraced in the middle stages. I Can Hear Music was held up and unable to improve until approaching the 150m. Mr Tickets near the 500m was checked after being awkwardly positioned inside the heels of Dark Image. A short distance later Mr Tickets was again hampered when Uptown Lad shifted out to improve. When questioned K Jennings advised that after trailing Dark Image throughout it was his intention to come to that horse's outside and make his run, however passing the 500m when Dark Image was shifted wider on the track by Show 'em, Mr Tickets, which was travelling strongly, improved quickly to the inside of the heels of Dark Image and as a result was then awkwardly placed,
suffered interference and when Dark Image commenced to weaken lost some ground and momentum before being able to obtain clear running soon after straightening. Lomazzo A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have some traces of blood in its offside nostril and some abrasions over its nearside eye. As the Stewards and the veterinary officer were not comfortable that the blood was as a result of external trauma, trainer K Lees was advised he must furnish a veterinary clearance and that Lomazzo must gallop over 1000m in the presence of a steward prior to racing again RACE 8 Komatsu Frontrunner Benchmark 63 Handicap 1200m All Sassitude bounded on jumping and lost ground. Shalama began awkwardly. Raced wide without cover throughout the event. Your Witness overraced throughout the early stages. Italian Son near the 400m was inclined to lay in and had to be steadied away from the heels of Our Sassitude which was taken out marginally by Zither. General Harmony was bumped approaching the 200m by Zigamore which laid in. Meliboea When questioned relative to the performance rider B Shinn explained that his mount travelled well midfield in a fast run race. He explained that he was able to trail the eventual third placegetter All Sassitude into the straight however when placed under pressure was disappointing in its failure to finish off the race. A post race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Zither When questioned J Penza stated that his mount travelled well throughout the event however when asked to improve from the 400m did not stretch out and may not have appreciated today's firmer track. A post race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
