A Message From Our Superintendent/PreK-12 Principal Hello Weston, This introduction is long over due, but I feel very privileged to be part of this Weston School District and community. I am coming to Weston with over 25 years of experience in education of which the last 12 were as an administrator and superintendent. Everyone has made me feel welcomed and it is clear that Weston pride is alive and well. Though I have had great experiences in all of the schools I have worked at, I am most at home in a rural setting and am committed to creating opportunities for students in rural communities. Rural schools are often overlooked by policy makers and government due to the focus on large, urban educational concerns, but rural schools are experiencing the same or even more significant obstacles to student success. My goal for Weston is to build on the strong community support and excellent educators to create opportunities for our students that ensure that they are college and career ready. Students need experiences that will give them the knowledge, skills and confidence to make the critical life choices on their way to and after graduation. I believe that working together we can achieve that goal for our kids. In the coming months and years we will be reaching out to the community to form partnerships and develop real world experiences for our students. So please don t hesitate to contact me if you have a hobby, skill or interest that you would like to share with our students. I look forward to working with all of you in building off of the deep rooted pride and heritage of Weston to create a learning environment where we can all grow. Dr. Stephen Guenther Superintendent / Principal 2

Art room news Miss Adventures in Paper Mache Miss Thiel s 8th grade art class has been elbow deep in goop and paper, while they create functional animal cookie jars out of recycled materials. They learned all about the history of paper mache, its origins in China (not France, as it s name implies), and discussed many examples of contemporary paper mache sculpture. Layer upon layer of newspaper, paper towels, and finally colored construction paper will complete them, giving them a strong, hardened surface. What s Happening? Kindergarten Artists have just completed a landscape tree collage. 1st Grade Artists are finishing up owl collages with painted papers. 2nd Grade Artists are working on landscapes involving origami and sewing details. 3rd Grade Artists studied insets and symmetry and a creating symmetrical bug paintings. 4th Grade Artists are working on paper mache rain sticks created from Pringles cans. 5th Grade Artists are working on warm and cool leaf watercolors. 3D sculpture such as paper mache teaches students how to creatively problem solve, visualize, and implement sculptural art making techniques to creating a form. Student were encouraged to choose a spirit animal, an animal (real or mythical) that represents some of their physical and personality characteristics. They each symbolize the student who created them, and are looking fantastic! A SHOUT OUT to everyone who has donated sewing machines, art supplies, newspaper, cardboard, aluminum foil, ssues, etc to the art room! Thank you so very much!! Miss Thiel 17
