In station areas, new pedestrian links can increase network connectivity and provide direct access to stations.

Eliminate on-street parking where it will allow for a dedicated bus only lane %

New State of the Art BRT systems Walter Hook, Executive Director, ITDP NYU, February 2010

Guangzhou is the highest capacity direct service BRT in the world, TransMilenio is the highest trunk and feeder system. Both can be optimized. Depends on local circumstances

560 296 Route using corridor /route length more than 30% 61 10 42 BRT Vehicle, can leave corridor Don t need feeder Flexible Operation 优点 : 专用走廊, 走廊内 Guangzhou and Cali, Colombia, are the first BRT systems to combine full BRT features with direct routes

Guangzhou s Zhongshan BRT Corridor Before. (it was already congested...)

Ridership is today over 21,000 pphpd, making it #2 after TransMilenio in terms of capacity and ridership

It was a huge fight to get this much space for stations and required intervention of the Mayor himself

Karl Fjellstrom, ITDPs Guangzhou Representative. Mayor agreed in part because of need for a showcase for Asia Games

We didn t have control over bus programming or traffic signals, so they included too many routes and gave us only about 33% green time but we asked for 45%. Should be fixed soon.

New 12 meter LPG buses with at level boarding. We wanted 18 meter artics but there s a local LPG ordinance and LPG too weak for artics

First bike lane on a major arterial since the early 1990s

They are not yet what we wanted Another $200 million in pipeline for corridor improvements

Bike parking and new passenger information kiosks

The Bus Routes are the same as some old routes, but now they are B routes.

Shopping malls already building connections to the walkways.

Full integration with 4 metro stops. Station connections not finished yet.

When finished, it will be the first BRT fully integrated with Metro, at 4 stations.

GPS control room under testing

Lots of nice space in the stations for bike parking or Coca Cola machines

Senior Engineer Duan Xiaomei inspecting the new bike sharing program

More bike parking

Disabled access. Guard lowers the ramp and changes the traffic signal.

Real time bus location information actually works

Places to sit that don t take up too much space.

At level boarding. Gap only about 4 inches. Day One.

Transit oriented development. This station had no demand when project started so had to redesign stations.

What s happening at the next station down

TransJakarta is the longest BRT system in Asia 8 corridors now operational. Harmony Station nicely rebuilt after 5 year fight. Inter-corridor routes operating after 5 year fight.

Just a leetle gap issue

Lane enforcement: it s a problem on 4 corridors

At least Corridor I of TransJakarta still slips past the traffic.

Delhi debacle: Direct service system led to 6 phase signals and consumed 6 lanes at every intersection

Ahmedabad Bus Rapid Transit System 9 Oct 2009

Construction complete on about 45 km of planned 90 km network Free service since mid-july - 14 buses - 26,000 passengers / day - 27% of riders from private vehicles Competitive bidding for bus operations and fare collection Trunk service with no feeders. We argued for direct services but Delhi scared everyone off.

Segregated median bus lanes

Median stations

Level boarding 900 mm

Two-phase junctions

Difficult to get traffic police to impose short enough signal phases, so operating unsignalized

Johannesburg: Trunk, Feeder and Complimentary Corridor length: 63 km Number of stations: 78

Station designed for specific boarding and alighting (Orlando Football stadium)

Vehicles are World Class: Low-Emission Engines, High Quality Euro IV diesel engine with particulate traps (Bogota is Euro II, so Rea Vaya is much cleaner!) Need to check if fuel spec is consistent with the warranty

Innovative Complementary Routes Doors on both sides Facilitates bigger service range while trunk infrastructure is being expanded Initial downtown circulator didn t work and was discontinued.

The Taxi Transition: Involving the taxi industry to become owners of the new system is moving forward but its been a year long negotiating process and not every interest can be protected or bought off.
