IDC SCHEDULE The Instructor Development Course (IDC) consists of two parts as follows: 1) The Assistant Instructor (AI) program 2) The Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) program. The combination of the 3-day AI course and the 4-day OWSI course makes up the continuous 7-day IDC program. It is possible to complete the AI course and then complete the OWSI at a later time. This is perfect for the candidate who doesn t have the time to do the complete IDC, or who would like to spend time gaining experience as an AI before completing the OWSI program. It is also possible for those AI candidates who have already completed the new AI course at another facility to enroll in our OWSI course. Instructors from training organizations other than PADI may qualify for the OWSI part depending on their teaching experience. WHAT TO PREPARE The PADI IDC is an intensive course and the best thing that you can do to succeed is to spend time preparing your Diving Knowledge and Skill Demonstrations. Let s look at the IE areas of evaluation and the preparations you can to make to ensure a stress-free and fun IDC. 1 Written Exams a) System, Standards and Procedures This part will be covered during the IDC. Do not try to learn all the Standards there are. Your preparation is to complete the knowledge reviews at the front of your Instructor Candidate Workbook using your Instructor Manual as a reference. b) Five Knowledge Sections Prepare your academic knowledge. You will be evaluated in areas: Physics, Physiology, Equipment, Skills and Environment and The Recreational Dive Planner (table, wheel and erdp) The best preparation is to go through your Diving Knowledge Workbook, which you should be familiar with from your Divemaster Training. If you are able to give the right answers and explain why the other options are wrong, then there is nothing you have to worry about. The completion of all Knowledge Reviews from the new Candidate Workbook is a prerequisite for the course. In order to do so it is necessary to have access to following materials: Business of Diving. Best of the Undersea Journal. Law and the Diving Professional. Children and Diving. 2 Teaching Presentations a) Academic, b) Confined Water and c) Open Water How to prepare and deliver Teaching Presentations will be covered during the AI portion of the IDC. 3 Skill Demonstrations Be familiar with the Open Water Diver Course skills in particular. A Helpful tool is the Open Water Diver Video. 4 Rescue of Scuba Diving Victim Review Exercise 7 from the Rescue Diver Course. Practice in the pool if you can. Use mouth-to-mouth and pocket mask. 5 Competence of all Diving Skills Go diving whenever you can. You will NOT be taught Divemaster level Dive Theory during the IDC Program. We will take a quick look at the 5 topics during the IDC Prep and our staff will help with some remediation at this time. 6 Swim Test Conducted as part of the IDC, the 800m snorkel swim is NOT timed.
