Smoky Hill Cheerleading Program 2013-2014 Tryouts Thank you for your interest in the Smoky Hill Cheerleading program. This packet includes information on the tryout process and outlines what is expected from athletes and parents in regards to time commitments, financial obligations and athlete behavior. TRYOUT INFORMATION Tryout Dates and Times: Tryouts will be held April 29 th through May 2 nd, 2013 from 7:00pm to 8:30pm in the Smoky Hill High School East Gym. Team selections will be posted by 3:00pm on Friday, May 3 rd outside of the Smoky Hill Activities Office. Tryout Material: During the tryouts, athletes will learn the Smoky Hill fight song, one sideline chant and one cheer. Participants will also be asked to demonstrate their skills in jumps, tumbling and stunting. Athletes will be evaluated on the aforementioned skills and assigned to a team accordingly. Team Selection: There are an approximate 50 positions available in the program: Up to 25 Junior Varsity Up to 25 Varsity Team selections are not final and athletes may be removed or reassigned at any time based on issues or improvements in skill level or questions of attitude and/or overall commitment. Tryout Prerequisites: Each athlete must complete and submit the following on or before the first day of tryouts: Emergency Contact Information form (Included in this packet) Smoky Hill Cheerleading Contract and Waiver (Included in this packet) Physical verification from a doctor. (A print out from the doctor is sufficient, does not have to be physical form from district). Physicals may be obtained through your family physician or an Urgent Care facility. Copy of Current Report Card or print out from Powerschool (All athletes must pass the fourth quarter of 2012 school year per CHSAA guidelines. Student athletes cannot have one or more F and GPA must be above 2.0) Any participant who does not submit these items will not be permitted to tryout. 2

TIME COMMITMENT Cheerleading is a two-season sport at Smoky Hill. Practices begin in May and team events last through early March; Athletes who tryout in spring commit for both the fall and winter seasons. A team calendar of events can be found at www.smokyhillcheer.com and should be checked on a weekly basis. Practice, game and competition times vary and are subject to change. Time Commitment: Practices Pre-season practices begin in May and typically take place during evenings, 2-3 nights/week. Summer practices run June through August and are typically in the mornings, 2-4 days/week. Fall/Winter practices run August through early February in the evenings, 4-5 nights/week. Some Saturday or weekday-morning practices may be added, as needed, in preparation for competition. Both JV and Varsity athletes will attend tumbling classes twice a week, beginning in May and going through February. Fall Break: Cheerleaders will be expected to attend practices during part of the week of Fall Break because of the beginning of competition season in early October. Time Commitment: Games Girls Volleyball (1-2 nights/week beginning in August, lasting through November Both teams). Football (Beginning in August and lasting through October, Varsity will attend games on Friday nights, occasional Thursday nights and Saturday afternoons; JV will attend games on Saturday mornings or afternoons). Boys and Girls Basketball (1-2 nights/week beginning in December, lasting through early March Both teams). Attendance may be required at additional school and community events (i.e. Football Season Kickoff BBQ, Homecoming Pep Assembly and Parade, Fitness Festival, Fundraising events, Team Bonding, etc.) Time Commitment: Competitions JV: Saturdays in October and November and culminating with the JV Invitational/State competition in early December. Possibility for competitions in late January. The Centennial League Competition typically takes place on a weeknight in early November. Varsity: Saturdays in October, November, December and January. The Centennial League Competition typically takes place on a weeknight in early November. The State Spirit Championship is an all-day event on a Friday in early December. The Varsity squad will also travel to Orlando, Florida for the National High School Cheerleading Championships February 6-11, 2014. Practice and Event Requirements: Athletes are to arrive 1 hour prior to the scheduled time for football games and 30 minutes prior to all other games. Athletes are expected to be on time and present for the entire game/event, unless prior approval has been made with your coach. You must be in full uniform with all accessories (Hair and makeup, bow, shoes, jewelry removed, etc.). 3

Athletes are expected to show good sportsmanship at all practices and events. Remember you represent the school and the rest of your team. Lettering/Participation Requirements: To be considered for a Varsity letter or a Junior Varsity participation certificate you must satisfy the following conditions: Athlete must have completed a minimum of 90% of all scheduled games. However, each athlete is expected to participate in all scheduled events. The evaluation of your commitment to: Grades & Eligibility, Attendance, Practice and Game Requirements, Behavior & Conduct, Financial Obligations. Your consideration for a letter/certificate is under the full discretion of the coaching staff, and the coaching staff s decision is final. Time Commitment: Parents Parent involvement is crucial to the success of the Smoky Hill Cheerleading Program and presents immense benefits for each athlete as a part of the team(s). As representatives of Smoky Hill High School and the community, there are various events throughout the year that require extra assistance from parents/guardians. We ask that each family contribute a minimum of 5 hours of service per year. Here are examples of activities/duties, which typically require additional assistance throughout the year: Homecoming Activities (i.e. poster party, parade/float decoration, football game stadium decoration, Extreme Fest) Senior Recognition Night Game day/half-time Snacks Competition day Snack Bags Transportation to Competitions/Games Day of Competition Prep (Hair/Makeup) Team Dinners End of Season Banquet Planning/Participation in Fundraising Travel Plans for Nationals Hours will be committed to at the mandatory parent meeting, which will be held on Tuesday, May 7 th. 4

Financial Obligations Financial Obligations: All outstanding school fines must be paid in order for and athlete to be eligible for tryouts, participation in games, competitions, and school assemblies/events. Deposits and fees paid by the team are non-refundable for any reason (i.e. Tumbling fees, competition fees, choreography and music fees, etc.) If you are removed from or choose to quit the team, you are responsible for payment of all items ordered. If an athlete is 2 months behind in their payments and has not made payment arrangements they may be removed from the team. Athletic Fees: Athletic fees of $90 will be collected in both August (Fall Season) and October (Winter Season). The form can be found on the Smoky Hill High School website https://sites.google.com/a/cherrycreekschools.org/smoky/ under Athletics, District Athletic Form (PDF). You must print this form and turn the completed form (including a doctor s approval) in to the Athletics office with your $90 payment. Fees are payable to Smoky Hill High School. Equipment Fees: Athletes are responsible for all equipment checked out (Uniforms, body liners, warm-ups, poms, etc.). Fines will be assigned if equipment is lost, damaged or not returned. Smoky Hill Cheerleading Contract & Waiver 2011-2012 As a candidate for the Smoky Hill Cheerleading team, I have read the policies and regulations of the Smoky Hill Cheerleading Program. I will assist in every way to see that I uphold these policies and regulations. I understand the attached requirements and commitments, and support the coaches decisions made surrounding these standards. If I have a question regarding these rules and regulations, I will contact the appropriate coach to discuss and clarify the situation. I understand that failure to meet the attached requirements allows the coaches the alternative of releasing me from the Smoky Hill Cheerleading Program. I also understand that my term as a Smoky Hill Cheerleader begins the moment I make the team.
