Kent State was the overall favorite. Ball State does not face Kent State in a league series this year, but will face off against the Golden Flashes in Florida next weekend. 8Who s Back: The Cardinals have every position starter back from last year s team except Elbert Devarie. P Zach Plesac, the team s top pitcher, led the Cardinals in most of the pitching statistics last year including wins (five), games started (16), innings pitches (107.1), strikeouts (77) and ERA (3.27) on the way to earning All-Mid-American Conference second team honors. OF Alex Call, a second team All-MAC honoree, led the Cardinals in batting average (.339), hits (78) and runs scored (45) while ranking second in slugging percentage (.465) and RBIs (42). Call put together a 16-game hitting streak in the middle of his sophomore campaign. C Jarett Rindfleisch, a 2015 ABCA/Rawlings All-Mideast Region first team selection, stacked among the top three in the MAC in home runs (10), RBIs (47) and slugging percentage (.518) a year ago. The junior catcher made 56 starts as a sophomore and piled up a personal-high five RBIs in the 16-8 win over Buffalo on March 29. 82015 Recap: Ball State reached the MAC championship game for the second time in three years in 2015. The Cardinals won 12 of 13 games during one stretch in the middle of the season before picking up three wins in the MAC tournament. Ball State fell to Ohio in the championship game, 6-2. The Cardinals led the MAC in home runs (39) while ranking second in batting average (.282), third in runs scored (345) and third in team fielding (.965). 8Wins Vs. HC Rich Maloney Rich Maloney, head coach at Ball State, won his 700th game as a collegiate head coach in 2015. He is in his second head coaching stint at BSU, originally serving from 1996-2002 and returning in 2013. He has led Ball State to four MAC titles as well as its only two 40-win seasons in program history (1997, 1999). In 2014, Maloney led Ball State to the MAC regular season championship, a MAC West Division title and the No. 1 seed in the MAC Tournament. The Cardinals ranked as high as 26th in the nation in the Collegiate Baseball Poll. For his efforts, Maloney was named the MAC Coach of the Year for a third time in his career (1998, 2001, 2014). A year later, the Cardinals made a late season surge and reached the 2015 MAC Tournament championship game. From 2003-12, Maloney was the head coach at Michigan. He guided the Wolverines to three Big Ten conference titles and the 2007 NCAA Regional title. He was named the 2007 and 2008 Big Ten and ABCA Mideast Regional Coach of the Year. Maloney has mentored 57 players who have been drafted, including five first round selections. In 2002, he helped Bryan Bullington become the only No. 1 overall draft pick in both Ball State and MAC history. Maloney was an All-American collegiate baseball player at Western Michigan and spent six seasons playing in the Atlanta Braves organization. He is currently serving as the ABCA second vice president. The Cardinals went 3-1-1 on the trip, wrapping it up with a 5-4 win over the Kansas City Royals affiliate academy. 8New Pitching Coach: Ball State added Chris Fetter as the team s pitching coach in January. Fetter played for head coach Rich Maloney at Michigan where he was a 2008 All-American. He went on to play four years of professional baseball in the San Diego Padres farm system before taking on a new challenge as a scout for the Los Angeles Angels in 2013. 8D1Baseball.com s Top Prospects: D1Baseball.com put out its annual top prospect list heading into the 2016 season and four Ball State Cardinals made the list Zach Plesac (No. 133), Alex Call (No. 199), Alex Maloney (No. 242) and Jarett Rindfleisch (No. 254). 8Brockhouse Shines in the Summer: Colin Brockhouse was named to Perfect Game s 2015 Summer Collegiate All-America team.
