RHAN 1 1. taswn i - if I were (to) Taswn i'n mynd i... - If I were to go to... Taswn i'n ymddeol... - If I were to retire... Taswn i'n byw yn... - If I were to live in... In English this if is often followed by the Past Tense of the verb in everyday speech. But take care - this is NOT really a Past Tense sentence Taswn i'n mynd i... - If I went to (i.e. If I were to go to) Taswn i'n ymddeol... - If I retired (i.e. If I were to retire) Taswn i'n byw yn... - If I lived (i.e. If I were to live in...) Taswn i'n mynd i Lundain, fe faswn i eisiau mynd i weld Eglwys Gadeiriol Sain Paul ac Abaty Westminster. - If I were to go (If I went) to London, I would want to go to see St Paul's Cathedral and Westminster Abbey. Taswn i'n mynd i Baris, fe faswn i'n gweld Tðr Eiffel. - If I were to go (If I went) to Paris, I'd see the Eiffel Tower. Fe faswn i'n gweld y Grand Canyon, taswn i'n mynd i America. - I'd see the Grand Canyon, if I were to go (if I went) to America. Fe faswn i eisiau mynd i'r Kremlin, taswn i'n mynd i Moscow. - I'd want to go to the Kremlin, if I were to go (if I went) to Moscow. 2. You ve noticed, that just like English, the taswn i pattern can come at the beginning of the sentence - or in the middle Taswn i'n ennill y Loteri, fe faswn i'n prynu Ferrari. - If I were to win (If I won) the Lottery, I would buy a Ferrari. Fe faswn i'n prynu Ferrari, taswn i'n ennill y Loteri. - I would buy a Ferrari, if I were to win (If I won) the Lottery. 14

3. Taswn i ti / Taswn i chi - If I were you This is a useful phrase to know - we all like to give advice! Taswn i ti, fe faswn i'n prynu car newydd. - If I were you, I'd buy a new car. Taswn i chi, mi faswn i'n mynd i'r gwely'n gynnar. - If I were you, I'd go to bed early. 4. eisiau This is the only verb which does NOT require 'yn' in front of it but but fe faswn i eisiau fe faswn i'n mynd taswn i eisiau taswn i'n gweld 5. tasai e(o)/ hi - if he / she were (to) tasai r gwesty - if the hotel were (to) tasai hi'n mynd - if she were to go ( if she went) tasai e (o)'n gallu - if he were able to ( if he could) tasai r plant yn dod - if the children were to come (if the children came) Tasai fy merch yn gallu defnyddio cyfrifiadur, fe fasai hi n gallu gweithio mewn swyddfa. - If my daughter were able to use a computer, she would be able to work in an office. Fe fasai John yn hoffi dysgu Sbaeneg, tasai e'n cael y cyfle. - John would like to learn Spanish, if he were to have (if he had) the opportunity. Mi fasai Mary wrth ei bodd, tasai hi'n cael persawr yn anrheg. - Mary would be in her element, if she were to have (if she had) perfume as a present. 15

6. Remember that there is no neutral it in Welsh. We use e (o) or hi. When referring to TIME and the WEATHER we use the feminine hi. Tasai hi'n braf, fe fasen ni'n mynd i lan y môr. - If it were fine, we d go to the seaside. Mi faswn i'n aros yn y tþ, tasai hi'n bwrw eira. - I d stay in the house, if it were to snow. Tasai hi'n bwrw eira, fe fasai'r plant wrth eu bodd. - If it were to snow, the children would be in their element. 7. When using the 'taswn' forms, adjectives such as the following are useful: yn dalach - taller yn gyflymach - faster yn deneuach - thinner yn llai swnllyd - less noisy Tasai e'n dalach, fe fasai e'n gallu bod yn blismon. - If he were taller, he could be a policeman. Tasai John yn gyflymach, fe fasai e'n gallu chwarae ar yr asgell. - If John were faster, he would be able to play on the wing. 8. I m sure that you ve noticed that we can place a verb after this pattern Taswn i'n mynd - if I were to go Tasai hi n gweld - if she were to see Or we can place an adjective Taswn i n oer - if I were cold Tasai Tom yn dalach - if Tom were taller 9. You don't have to keep the same person of the verb in both halves of the sentence. fe faswn i... taswn i... fe fasai hi... tasai hi... 16

Any persons can be used: fe faswn i... tasai hi... tasai Tom... fe fasai Tom... taswn i... 10. Remember that we use the 3rd person singular form of the verb even with a plural noun Tasai'r plant yn dod adref o'r ysgol nawr, fe faswn i'n gallu mynd i siopa. - If the children were to come (if the children came) home from school now, I would be able to (could) go shopping. RHAN 2 1. tasen ni - if we were (to) tasen ni'n mynd - if we were to go ( if we went) tasen ni'n fwy cyfoethog - if we were richer. Fe fasen ni'n mynd i lan y môr, tasai hi'n braf yfory. - We would go to the seaside, if it were fine tomorrow. Fe fasen ni'n hwyr i'r gwaith, tasen ni'n colli trên wyth o'r gloch. - We'd be late for work, if we were to miss (if we missed) the 8 o'clock train. Tasen ni'n dal y bws hanner awr wedi saith, fe fasen ni'n gynnar i'r gwaith. - If we were to catch (if we caught) the 7.30 bus, we'd be early for work. 2. tasen nhw - if they were (to) tasen nhw'n prynu - if they were to buy ( if they bought) tasen nhw'n dod - if they were to come ( if they came) 17

Tasen nhw'n teithio ar y trên i Lundain, fe fasen nhw'n arbed trafferth ac amser. - If they were to travel (if they travelled) by train to London, they'd save trouble and time. Fe fasai daffodils yn yr ardd yn y gwanwyn, tasen nhw'n plannu'r bylbiau yn yr hydref. - There would be daffodils in the garden in spring, if they were to plant (if they planted) the bulbs in the autumn. 3. taset ti - if you were (to) taset ti'n ennill - if you were to win (i.e. if you won) taset ti'n ymfudo - if you were to emigrate (i.e. if you emigrated) Beth faset ti'n (ei) wneud, taset ti'n ennill y Loteri Cenedlaethol? - What would you do, if you were to win (if you won) the National Lottery? 4. tasech chi - if you were (to) tasech chi'n dalach - if you were taller tasech chi'n dost/sâl - if you were ill Fasech chi'n prynu tþ mawr, tasech chi'n gyfoethog? - Would you buy a large house, if you were rich? 5. The taswn forms echo the baswn forms Fe/Mi faswn i... taswn i faset ti... taset ti fasai e(o)/hi... tasai e(o)/hi fasen ni... fasech chi... fasen nhw... tasen ni tasech chi tasen nhw 18

6. Sgwrs Nigel: 'Tasech chi'n cael y cyfle i fynd dros y môr, ble basech chi'n hoffi mynd? Basil: 'Taswn i'n cael yr amser a'r arian i fynd dros y môr, fe faswn i'n hoffi mynd i Efrog Newydd. Nigel: Beth fasech chi'n (ei) weld yno? Basil: Fe faswn i'n gweld lleoedd enwog fel The Statue of Liberty a Central Park. 'Tasai hi'n braf, fe faswn i'n hoffi mynd am dro o gwmpas Central Park. Efrog Newydd - New York lleoedd enwog - famous places am dro - for a walk o gwmpas - around Beth am? - what about? sioe - show 19
