Fume Hd User Guidelines 1. Intrductin A fume hd cabinet is an enclsed wrking chamber fitted with an exhaust ventilatin system. The primary functin f the fume hd cabinet is t prtect individuals wrking with chemicals frm any ptential vapurs, dust, gases r durs emanating frm said chemicals. In rder fr the fume hd t effectively prtect individuals frm chemical vapurs, dust, gases r durs it must be perated prperly by the fume hd user. This standard describes the prper usage f a chemical safety fume hd in University f Trnt labs. 2. Applicatin These guidelines apply t users and peratrs f fume hds and lab managers r supervisrs r labratry space that cntain chemical safety fume hds. This standard cvers the use, peratin and management f all types f chemical safety fume hd systems n campus. This standard des nt cver maintenance r fume hd design as these tpics are cvered in separate standards. 3. Definitins Fume hd user r peratr: Any individual that accesses a University f Trnt chemical safety fume hd fr any length f time and relies n said fume hd t prtect them frm expsure t chemical vapurs, dust r durs being prduced r cntained within. 4. Respnsibilities 4.1 Office f Envirnmental Health and Safety It is the respnsibility f the University f Trnt Office f Envirnmental Health and Safety t, where feasible: Maintain, evaluate and revise this standard; Freely allw all University f Trnt wrkers and students t access this standard; Prvide guidance in the understanding and functinality f this standard; and Adhere t the prcedural requirements specified fr the UfT OEHS in this standard. 4.2 University f Trnt Wrkers, Students and Cntractrs

Any individuals n campus identified as Fume Hd Users and Operatrs shuld adhere t all standards identified in Sectin 5 f this dcument at all times when using and perating a University f Trnt fume hd. 4.3 Lab Managers and Supervisrs It is the respnsibility f Lab Managers and Supervisrs t: Prvide fume hd safety training fr individuals, f whm they supervise, that are identifiable as Fume Hd Users and Operatrs ; and T the best f their ability, ensure that such individuals, f whm they supervise, adhere t all standards identified in Sectin 5 f this dcument at all times when using and perating a University f Trnt 5. Guidelines This sectin describes the standards and required prcedures that shuld be fllwed by Fume Hd Users and Operatrs when using a University f Trnt fume hd. 5.1 User Safety Checks Prir t using r perating any fume hd, a fume hd user r peratr shuld cnduct the fllwing checks t ensure the fume hd is safe t use and the fume hd and alarm systems are functining prperly: 1. Fume hd flw alarm: a. Pwered n and peratinal; and b. Nt alarming. 2. Fume hd certificatin sticker: a. Is present and the certificatin is current; b. Safe perating heights are clearly indicated n the sticker; and c. Apprpriate emergency numbers are listed in case f alarm, malfunctin r certificatin has expired. 3. Fume hd alarm sticker: a. Is present; and b. Cntains clearly listed instructins in case f an alarm situatin.

4. Fume hd frame: a. Has reference heights indicated that crrespnd t the heights identified n the fume hd certificatin sticker. 5. Fume hd sash: a. Easy t perate; b. Stable; and c. Undamaged 6. Fume hd interir: a. Clear f needless clutter; b. Sufficient space that allws fr safe handling f chemicals; and c. Periphery equipment such as gas nzzles, hses, etc. is nt damaged. 5.2 Fume Hd Operatins When using a University f Trnt fume hd fr the functin f chemical cntainment and prtectin frm chemical expsure the user shuld fllw these prcedures: The fume hd sash shuld: Only be perated within f the safe perating range indicated n the fume hd certificatin sticker; In sme cases, such as setting up equipment r an experimental apparatus, it is permissible t have the fume hd sash fully pen; hwever the fume hd sash shuld be clsed t a safe wrking height upn cmpletin f such activities. Remain clsed at any time the user r peratr is nt actively accessing the fume hd; Only be adjusted when wearing apprpriate glves; and Nt be bstructed frm pening and clsing by bstacles in the fume hd r n the airfil/frame. The fume hd airfil shuld nt be used t stre materials r equipment.

The fume hd face r space in-frnt f the fume hd shuld nly be accessed by ne individual at a time. Machinery r equipment that culd significantly alter the flw f the fume hd shuld be nt used within the fume hd unless the hd s slitary functin is t huse said machinery r equipment. This includes: Large pieces f equipment that bstruct at least 1/2 f the fume hd bench; Equipment that bstructs at least 1/3 f the fume hd bench and was added t the interir f the fume hd after the mst recent certificatin; Equipment that manipulates airflw patterns, such as fans r exhaust tubes frm small air cnditining r fan units. 5.3 Fume Hd Care A fume hd must be prperly maintained by the user t ensure that at any given time, when the fume hd is t be used fr chemical prtectin and cntainment, its safe functin is nt cmprmised. Thus, the fllwing prcedures shuld be fllwed by fume hd users and peratrs t help maintain the integrity f a fume hd: String materials in the fume hd: Only materials relevant t nging research activities that ccur within the fume hd shuld be stred in the fume hd and nly in quantities that that serve the purpse f a single research sessin r experiment. If mre materials are stred in the fume hd than specified in the previus paragraph then: Excess materials shuld be remved; r The fume hd shuld be designated as a strage area and shuld nt be used fr any research r chemical safety. The fume hd sash shuld be kept free f: Paper, writing r bstructins that blck visibility t the interir f the hd; and Obstructins that prevent easy pening and fully clsing f the sash. Cntaminatin:

Any cmpnents f the fume hd (exterir r interir) such as the wrk bench, frame, sash, air fil, nzzles r taps that have ptentially cme in cntact with a chemical cmpund (frm a spill, cntaminated PPE, etc.) shuld be apprpriately cleaned t avid inadvertent cntact with skin. 5.4 Fume Hd Alarm Cnditins If a fume hd alarm sunds lwer the fume hd sash until the alarm stps. If the alarm: A. Stps while the fume hd sash is still within the safe perating range indicated n the certificatin sticker, then wrk can cntinue in the fume hd with the sash pen t any height within the safe perating range and which des nt trigger further alarm; r B. Des nt stp while the fume hd sash is still within the safe perating range indicated n the certificatin sticker, then: 1. Discntinue use f the fume hd; 2. Disengage and pwer dwn any heat surces in the hd; 3. Cap any pen vessels r clse any cmpressed gas cylinders in the hd; a. In a situatin where a vlatile r gaseus cmpund with acute and/r severe health effects cannt be capped r prevented frm leaving its vessel, then immediately shut the sash, evacuate the labratry and cntact campus plice; therwise, cntinue t the next step. 4. Clse the fume hd sash cmpletely; 5. Indicate t individuals within the lab that the fume hd is malfunctining; 6. Leave a nte n the fume hd that indicates it is ut f rder; 7. Cntact 8-3000 and infrm them that the fume hd is in need f maintenance; and 8. Infrm yur supervisr f the alarm. 5.5 Fume Hds in Need f Service If a fume hd requires maintenance due t an alarm situatin r it fails any cmpnent f a User Safety Check, then it requires service befre it can be put int use. UTM 905-828-5301 UTSC 416287-7579 Recertificatin can be scheduled by cntacting: St. Gerge 416-978-4467 UTM 905-828-5301 UTSC 416-208-5141 5.5.1 Recertificatin is required when: There is a prblem with the certificatin sticker: There is n sticker; All sticker fields are nt cmplete/filled; The safe perating range listed n the sticker des nt match the heights indicated n the fume hd frame; The expiratin date n the sticker has passed. The alarm sticker is missing; A new fume hd alarm has been installed r the existing alarm has been repaired. 5.5.2 Maintenance is required when: There was an alarm incident that required a call t campus plice r 8-3000; There is visible damage t the fume hd sash that affects its structural integrity r mbility; Cmpnents f the fume hd cabinet are damaged in a way that cmprmises functinality r safety (i.e. gas valves, nzzles, etc.) 5.5.3 Husekeeping/user care may be required when: Due t bstructins in the hd, there is nt sufficient rm t safely handle chemicals; Visibility thrugh the fume hd sash is bstructed;

There is apparent staining r chemical cntaminatin, such as a spill, n the any part f the fume hd; r There are damaged materials within the hd, such as a brken glass vessel. 6. Training Any University f Trnt wrkers, students, vlunteers r cntractrs must be trained in this standard if, in the curse f their regular duties, they might use, perate r access a University f Trnt fume hd, r they directly supervise any individuals that may use, perate r access a University f Trnt fume hd. 7. Standard Revisins On an annual basis, the University f Trnt Office f Envirnmental Health and Safety may evaluate this standard with respect t: Efficacy in: Achieving cmmunicatin; Prtecting the health and safety f wrkers; and Maintaining regulatry cmpliance. Relevance and functinality f the standard with respect t regulatry requirements; Clarity f the standard and prcedures t all respnsible parties; and Feasibility f implementatin and management f the standard. If, upn evaluatin, gaps are fund with respect t the evaluatin criteria, the standard will be revised in such a way as t crrect such gaps.
