August 2017 A Message from the President Wasn t it nice to have some warm sunshine in July?! Of course, it had to rain on the Moose Run Tournament, but that is to be expected. The weather didn t dampen our spirits and a great time was had by all including the momma bear and her three cubs! The Moose Run Tournament has a special place in my heart as a dear departed friend insisted that I join the AWGA so I could play in it a decade ago. Thank you Annette and Linda for putting together a great tournament just make sure you order a couple of beautiful sunny days next year! While we had to cancel the Cha Cha Cha Tournament due the busy golf season and low attendance numbers, the organizers are already at work thinking of ways to make it even better for next year. Due to the generosity of our members, we were able to write a check for $1,825.00 as a contribution to Hospice of Alaska. August starts with the USGA Senior Women s Tournament on the 1st, We have 18 women signed up to participate which enables us to send it takes a village to make the AWGA the wonderful organization it is. 4 women to the Regionals way to go ladies! We ll be wrapping up Team Play and Team Match Play, competing for the AWGA Club Championship, and topping off our season with the Moose Race at Settler s Bay. The Niners League continues and has proven to be a popular addition to the calendar. It s going to be another busy month! Many of you will have watched the British Open and the amazing final holes that Jordan Spieth put together. Watching him calculate how to get out of the pickle his errant drive got him into was a good lesson in knowing the rules of golf. A shout out to Jamie Berge for her informative and fun Rules Clinics that enabled me to explain what was happening to my husband! Who would of thought that taking a drop in the driving range among the Titlest and Bridgestone trailers would have been the right course of action that enabled him to escape with a bogey?! The Rules can be your friend even if your driver isn t! As you know, it takes a village to make the AWGA the wonderful organization it is. If you are interested in contributing to the effort, please feel free to contact any of the Board Members or Tournament organizers. Get out and play!

2016 Ruth Mizelle Award Winner Jean McCarthy Dreary weather and black bears couldn t stop the AWGA women from hitting the Hill for the annual Moose Run Tournament. 37 women competed in 4 different flights and at the end of the two days, there was actually a tie for Low Gross between Pam Chesla (84 /86 = 170) and Toyoko Hawkins (89/81 = 170). They retrieved their damp clubs and umbrellas and returned to the 18th Tee box for a playoff. Pam found the fairway, but wasn t quite as far around the corner as she would have liked. Toyoko, feeling the pressure, drove her ball into the trees very unlike her! With nothing to lose, she valiantly tried to navigate the woods, with no luck. Meanwhile, Pam hit a wonderful shot onto the green where she had a two putt for par. Toyoko graciously conceded and Pam took Low Gross. Very exciting! Betty Toney passed on the Ruth Mizell award and a big red kiss! to Jean McCarthy for all the work she has done for the AWGA, especially as Days Play coordinator at Moose Run Golf Course. A very fitting recipient! Thank you to Annette and Linda for their time and effort in putting on such a great tournament. They promise better weather in 2018! 2017 RESULTS Closest To The Pin 1st Flight: 2nd Flight: 3rd Flight: 4th Flight : Longest Drive 1st Flight: 2nd Flight: 3rd Flight: 4th Flight: low net 1st Flight: 2nd Flight: 3rd Flight : 4th Flight: Kris Abegg Laura Walsh Judy Sundberg Tamara Sanderson (Lucky winner!) Days Play Updates Settler s Bay Ladies Play Days Come out and enjoy fall golf at it s finest. Green fees are $25 and tee times will start at 10 am. Each Thursday starting Aug 3, we will have three tee times dedicated to AWGA. Please contact me if you are interested in playing so I will get a feel for the level of interest. The course is in great shape, the scenery is unmatched, and the 19th hole Albatross serves great food and drinks. Come and play! Celeste Bolea / celestebolea@gmail.com / (907) 301-3399 Punch Cards by 09/30/17 All paper punch cards must be brought into the golf shop and converted into electronic punches. They will be maintained in our pointof-sale system by name. By instruction from our accounting office, after the deadline, the paper can be no longer honored. Please make sure to do this before the end of the season and let your friends know! Thanks. Day s Play and Team Play Putt/Chip in Clarification We ve had a request for clarification on what constitutes a Putt or a Chip In for Day s Play and Team Play. Putt Once a player s ball has come to rest on the green, all subsequent strokes until the hole has been completed are considered putts. So, for instance. Your ball is on the green. You had a large helping of Wheaties for breakfast and putted your ball with such force, it rolled off the green and into the fringe. No matter which club you may choose for your next shot, it is still counted as a putt. Chip In Therefore, it goes to reason that if your ball has come to rest on a green, you putt it off the green, and then chip it in, you would not be eligible to collect on the Chip In pot as your last shot would have be considered a putt. Hope that helps! Please submit your story to karenweaver25@gmail.com Elaine Kim, one of our new members, made her first birdie on Hole #14 on the Moose Run Hill Course during day s play on July 25th. She hit her tee shot just short of the green and then chipped it in! Congratulations Elaine! We re sure you will have many more! On June 25th, Kris Abegg was playing at Anchorage Golf Course with her husband and two other men. From the red tees on #4, she hit a solid tee shot then holed out from about 120 yards with her 8 iron for her first eagle! It was tracking towards the hole the entire way. She then birdied Hole #10 on her way to her best score ever (81) - and beat the guys! Way to go, Kris!! Kudos to our members who participated in the AGA State Senior Amateur Tournament. Congrats to Teresa Fisher who is our Women s State Senior Champion!
