ANNUAL REPORT AND FINANCIAL STATEMENTS 2016/17 State Champions: Open Women Bella Goward, Open Men Hamish Renwick.
2017/18 SPONSORS: Surfing Tasmania is supported by a great mix of national and state sponsors and Supporter Members. We thank them for their belief in the strategic direction and work our Board, Rep Committee, Boardrider Clubs and surf school operators are focused on.
PRESIDENTS REPORT: We have experienced another great year with some awesome events, coaching programs, developments programs and more at Surfing Tasmania. A highlight for me is witnessing the high standards of surfing and friendships that thrive between competitors and families that travel to our events. Tasmania has a great surfing community. We believe there is exciting times ahead as the national organisation Surfing Australia adopts a serious and strategic approach preparing for surfing s inclusion as an Olympic sport. The benefits will flow onto Surfing Tasmania and our members, watch this space. We have been very fortunate this year to gain further support from Surfing Australia where in 2017 / 18 we will be running three national events. The Nudie Australian Boardrider Battle, the Woolworths Surfer Groms presented by Wahu and the Woolworths TAS State Junior Surfing Titles over 4 rounds. A special thanks to our State Government for their continued support through the Sport and Recreation State Grant of $10,000 towards participation activities and coaching programs statewide. Additionally, our Supporter membership base again assisted in securing the financial viability of Surfing Tasmania, your support is sincerely appreciated. This support has enabled the organisation to manage and run our statewide calendar of 12 surfing and SUP events. This year the Nudie Australian Boardrider Battle, which was won by the NW Boardriders was an exceptional event, with the NW team gaining excellent national exposure at the ABB final in Newcastle. The NW Boardriders #cantstopusnow has creating some real rivalry and competitiveness with this year s event scheduled for 16 December and is looking to be epic. Surfing Tasmania has kicked off some junior development initiatives this year adding strength and conditioning programs around the state, plus the Smoothstar training programs. Smoothstar is now the Surfing Tasmania and state development squad program sponsor, with these boards being the most preferred trainer board for surf coaching. All the best to our junior team this year at the Australian Junior Surfing Titles next month in Culburra, NSW. Go hard team. A new format of the Southern Challenge in memory of Paul Johannesen was a unique event that attracted some past competitors back into the competitive scene. The event was run in the Eddie Aikuai style format and was a clear success with Luke keen to leverage off this success for the next event. We look forward to the coming year with all our members with exciting events and programs to share with our surfing community. Marty Viney President

STATE JUNIOR TEAM Junior Nationals Report 2016 Philip Island Vic 25 th Nov - Dec 3 Attending staff: Cam Lynch School Surfing, Craig Freeman School Surfing, James Eaves Coach Surfing Tas, Benn Richardson Judge Surfing Tas, Jo Goldfinch School Surfing, Surfing Tas. The first day the swell was large and challenging and was held on the rip banks at Woolamai. Safety was paramount with a great Jet ski patrol looking after all surfers. Each surfer was given personal goals to achieve throughout the week by State Coach James Eaves and most surfers improved on their initial heat scores and wave scores as the week went.
The hardest day for the team was Day 3 with all u16 and 18 s having their requals and then the requals of the school surfing divisions with some surfers having to surf up to four times in the one day. I am not sure how we can avoid this. It really only happened to Tas and South Aus surfers as they were in all the requals in both divisions. Day 5 saw the u14 surfers compete and the standard of surfing in this division was amazing. Both our surfers improved on their heat scores and followed James advice to surf a better second heat. On finals day we had the day at the beach watching the amazing finals of all divisions. The team then competed in a 6 team tag team final. This year on the management side things went really well. Administrative tasks were spread between the three School Surfing Managers and this lightened the load. Cooking, house keeping shopping, driving was divided between the three managers. Benn Richardson and James Eaves were outstanding with both contributing to preparing/coaching surfers for their heats and debriefing them after the competition. School Surfing is transitioning management from Felix Goward and Jo Goldfinch to Cam Lynch and Craig Freeman. Felix and Jo are mentoring the changeover. It has been discussed with James about conducting monthly coaching sessions for all surfers who are hoping to make the state team. This would enable James to set technique goals which can be reviewed every month. Also It would also be beneficial to set up strength and conditioning and paddling/swimming programs. The overall feeling from the managers was it was a successful week for the team. Jo Goldfinch, Cam Lynch, Craig Freeman. Junior State Team 2016
STATE OPEN TEAM Hamish Renwick, Matt Gaby, Open Mens, Micheal Paxton O/40 Longboard, Karl Gol 0/40 Bodyboard Surfing Tasmania Open Team members again stood out at the ASF following last year s great efforts. Conditions were predominantly small but a welcomed warm and sunny. State Head Judge Karl Gol blasted the field to win the O45 Bodyboard Title at the Australian Surfmasters Festival held in the Cabarita- Kingscliffe area during August in northern NSW. An experienced campaigner at national level in competition and judging, Karl was Tasmania's most successful competitor at this year's event. O/40s team member and PBBR President Micheal Paxton struggled to find form this year in the small tricky conditions and did not progress past round 2 in the longboard. STAS's other team members Matt Gaby and the experienced Hamish Renwick competed in the Open Division with Hamish making it through three rounds to reach the quarter finals.
