About Pleon Yacht Club Pleon's Mission Pleon is a unique club that emphasizes junior sailing. Since the Club's beginning in 1887, Pleon's flag officers and members have been youngsters under the age of 21. The purpose of the Pleon Sailing Program is to involve as many young people as possible in the sport of sailing through a fun, educational atmosphere and to keep them involved and growing on a personal level over the course of many years. The program supports both serious competitors and recreational sailors of all skill levels, and is focused on building sailing skills while also promoting sportsmanship, fostering teamwork and strengthening respect for oneself and others. High School Sailing Program Pleon Yacht Club is used 8 weeks out of the year for a successful and long established summer junior sailing program. In response to the increasing level and popularity of sailing nation wide, the demand for sailing opportunities has grown. As a result, Pleon s shoulder season programs were created to further build and enhance junior sailing in the greater Boston Area. Sailing is a resource-intensive sport. Beyond equipment, it is necessary to have a venue, and Pleon is perfectly designed for dinghy sailing. Located on Marblehead Harbor, Pleon has access to a launch ramp, docks and a beautiful waterfront, rich with maritime history. In addition to these essentials, Pleon is also equipped with dinghies, motorboats and a recently built clubhouse. Furthermore, Pleon has a dedicated, longstanding Program Director and high-level, passionate coaches, determined to provide the best instruction. Our goal is to offer and use these resources and in turn better the opportunities and quality of youth sailing on the North Shore. 4
What to wear at practice? An absolute guarantee in spring sailing is that the water and air temperature will be cold. It is often windier than the summer and the chances of getting wet and cold are much higher. With proper layers and gear, discomfort can be avoided. REQUIRED: U.S. Coast Guard approved Lifejacket/PFD Dry suit Proper footwear dinghy boots or old sneakers Suggested: Base layers capilenes, hot chilis, underarmour, etc. (similar to what you would wear skiing, snowboarding or other cold weather outdoor sports) Fleece or wool layers to go over the base layers Gloves sailing gloves, atlas gloves, winter gloves, fleece liners and dishwashing gloves there are many different techniques, feel free to ask questions! Pleon Yacht Club High School Program Practice Policy Occasionally, practice will be held on land due to inclement weather conditions however, we will sail in most conditions such as rain, snow and cold temperatures. Sailors must come prepared. We will practice ON LAND if: There are thunderstorms in the vicinity. Two of the following are accurate: the wind is above 20 mph (sustained), the air temperature is below 30 degrees and the water temperature is below 40 degrees. Keep in mind: Practice is not cancelled if there is no school. We will notify participating sailors if practice is cancelled due to serious weather or other pertinent reasons. 6
Pleon Yacht Club High School Program 420 Usage Policy All Pleon Yacht Club 420s available to the High School Program be equipped with the following: o A mainsail and jib in working order o Rudder and tiller/tiller extension o An outhaul, mainsheet, jib sheets, boom vang, Cunningham, bowline, rudder tie down line, centerboard control lines, hiking straps, boat plugs and halyards The Pleon fleet of 420s are labeled 1-15 and 21-27. Labels can be found on the masts, booms, hulls, rudders, tillers, spinnaker poles, sails and sail bags. All of the pieces of the 420 should have matching labels. If there is a problem with any of the equipment at any time, the issue will be reported to the Program Director and/or Pleon coach immediately. The Program Director and/or coach will then provide the boat with the necessary fix. If a part is missing from a boat at any time, sailors will immediately notify the Program Director and/or the Pleon coach. The missing piece will be temporarily replaced by the Pleon coach or Program Director. At no point will sailors remove parts from another 420 to fix the boat they are using. If at any point on the water, sailors are involved in a collision resulting in damage, the coach on site will assess the immediate damage. The coach will then report the incident to the Program Director and Pleon coach. After further inspection, if the boat requires repair from outside sources, the sailors involved will be responsible for fees associated with the repair. 7
