FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Singapore Dance Theatre presents Passages Contemporary Season 2017 3-5 November 2017 SOTA Studio Theatre Incomparable Beauty by Ma Cong Company Premiere of Triptych by Val Caniparoli World Premiere by Toru Shimazaki 27 July 2017 Incomparable Beauty by Ma Cong Photo: Bernie Ng Singapore Dance Theatre (SDT) will be presenting its annual full contemporary season of the year, Passages, from 3-5 November at the SOTA Studio Theatre. Watch the human body come into full expression as the dancers confront works that grapple with the gratification and realisation of the raw state within oneself. Come and be captivated by the complexities and intricacies of Incomparable Beauty by Ma Cong, the company premiere of Triptych by Val Caniparoli, as well as a World Premiere by Toru Shimazaki. Passages Contemporary Season began in 2010 with the establishment of our SDT choreographic workshop. It grew beyond its boundaries becoming a fully-fledged season on its own several years ago and has established an identity for itself. Its aim is no different than any other season SDT produces, but maybe the accent is different. Passages showcases new works and present ballets from our repertory that compliment them in these performances. In this way, we look forward to what is next for our development. This year, we have a new work from Toru Shimazaki, who has so generously contributed to our repertoire previously with Absence of Story and Blue Snow. We also have the company premiere of Val Caniparoli s Triptych, which offers a unique work with a deep emotional context to it that is rarely achieved. It is based on the photographs of Lalage Snow taken of soldiers before and after their deployments to combat zones. To add to this, we are bringing back Ma Cong s remarkable Incomparable Beauty as an example of all that is the best within our established repertory. says Artistic Director Janek Schergen.

Incomparable Beauty Choreography Music Ma Cong Ezio Bosso Incomparable Beauty was inspired by the beautiful and emotive scores of Italian Composer, Ezio Bosso. Delving into the depth of our humanity, this dance explores the four pinnacles of the human state purity, pangs, passion and power; each incomparable to the other, and yet seamlessly melded into the beauty of our existence. Through the contrasting style of contemporary movements combined with classical ballet technique, Incomparable Beauty is an earthy and organic work that traverses through the diverse and transcendent dynamics of our being. Created especially for SDT by Tulsa Ballet s Resident Choreographer, Ma Cong. Incomparable Beauty is Ma Cong s second creation for Singapore Dance Theatre. Triptych (Company Premiere) Choreography Val Caniparoli Staging Brandon Freeman Music John Tavener, Alexander Balanescu Triptych was inspired by a photography collection Lalage Snow s We Are The Not Dead. It depicted the faces of British servicemen before, during and after their deployment to Afghanistan. It highlighted not only the physical transformations but the emotional ones as well. World Premiere Choreography Toru Shimazaki This will be Toru s third work for SDT. His previous works, Absence of Story and Blue Snow has contributed greatly to our repertoire list. Shimazaki first began choreographing while he was the director of the Ballet Department of the Sitter School of Dance in Canada from1989-91. He has since, choreographed extensively in Europe, America and in his native Japan for many renowned dance companies including: Japan's National New Tokyo Theatre, Singapore Dance Theatre, Colorado Ballet and many others. He is presently the Directing Professor of The Dance Program in the Music Department of Kobe Jogakuin College, Japan.
