PURPOSE: To bring archers together for a weekend of events including medieval archery games known as the Battle Clout and Wand. Additionally, there will be novelties, pot luck dinner and a 50 target trail shoot. Overall Man & Woman competitors will have their name engraved on historic trophies dating to 1936. As the event is staged approximately one month before the opening day of Oregon s archery season, it is a perfect time to verify your hunting tackle which was the original intent of the shoot begun by the Pope Young Field Archers of Oregon. Related Documents: 1. Information and Rules Handout (for shoot participants). 2. Informational Flyer (for TAO website & mailing) 3. Score Cards Clout & Wand, Trail Shoot 4. Winner s Certificate Events: 1. The Battle Clout is a long range round which simulates military field archery. Arrows are shot into the target area, which represents a besieged castle or troop of enemy soldiers in battle. Archers shoot six ends of six arrows (36 total) and may shoot a practice round prior to scoring. 2. The Wand is another long range military field archery round from medieval days with the objective of hitting a two inch wide stripe simulating shooting into a castle window. Archers shoot six ends of six arrows (36 total) and may shoot a practice round prior to scoring. 3. Trail shoot will consist of 50 animal targets to simulate realistic hunting shots found in the field with the objective of preparing for the upcoming hunting season. Archers will shoot one arrow per target. 4. Novelties may be available to test the skills of participants at the discretion of the host club. 5. A pot luck dinner will be held on Saturday evening for all registered shooters and their guests. TAO supply s the main course for the dinner. 6. Following dinner, the Annual TAO Business Meeting will be held. 7. An awards ceremony will be held Sunday afternoon. 1

The scoring tape will have 3 sections marked from the post ring marked with gold, red, blue, black and white. SCORING TAPE WITH ARROWS White Black blue Red Gold HANDLE SCORING RING & PIN WAND target is a padded post, to allow for easy arrow retrieval with a 2 wide stripe with 6 of post protruding from the ground. WAND POST Scoring: Clout: As the scoring tape is pulled 360 degrees around the pin, shooters are assigned to each color and pick up arrows that fall in that color (point location determines score) and are picked up accordingly. Once the circle is complete, arrows are laid on each color for scoring as follows: Gold = 9 pts Red = 7 pts Blue = 5 pts Black = 3 pts white = 1 pt Wand: Score 20 pts for broadhead blades which cut the black stripe. 2

For all archers, flu-flu arrows w/field tips may be required for novelty events and blunt tip arrows may not be used in any event. Competition, Bows, Arrows, Accessories (Gizmos): The original intent of the Pope Young Field Archers competition was that the event be an opportunity for archers to use their hunting tackle, in accordance with current Oregon Game Commission regulations of the day. Traditional Archers of Oregon have chosen to continue this theme for the present day Pope-Young Shoot for those competing for historic trophies. In this spirit, formal equipment checks will NOT be made, archers will be expected to compete, ON THEIR HONOR, as if they were in a true hunting situation, using only equipment legal for hunting big game mammals in the state of Oregon in accordance with the Legal Hunting Methods listed in current Big Game Regulations when competing for awards and certificates. Additionally, while legal for hunting in Oregon, the use of binoculars, range finders, mechanical release aids & sights are strictly prohibited in all events.
