TPHS DANCE COMPANY Audition Packet 2018-2019 JV and Varsity Hip-Hop Dance Team Varsity Contemporary Dance Team -2018 Mission Statement: To inspire a lasting love and appreciation for dance through training, artistic excellence, live performances, innovative choreography and creative expression. May 2, 2018 Dear Students, Thank you for your interest in joining the Torrey Pines High School Dance Company. I am determined to include students of all levels and give every student opportunities to perform. During the 2018-19 school year, the Company will include the Hip-Hop Dance Team (JV and Varsity), the Contemporary Dance Team (Varsity only), the Dance Team Class, Intermediate and Advanced Choreography classes and Dance PE. There is no audition required for Dance PE. For placement on the TPDT Hip Hop or TPDT Contemporary competitive teams you must attend the audition for the team you wish to be placed on. If you want to participate in both, you must attend both auditions. Those who are not placed on the competitive teams will be assigned to the Advanced or Intermediate Choreography classes or Dance PE. Please indicate on your application which team(s) you would like to be considered for. (If you are placed on a Varsity competition team, you are encouraged to enroll in the Dance Team Class-but are not required to do so). Auditions will be held from 3:00pm to 6:00pm. May 21, 22 and 23. Varsity Hip-Hop Coach-Simone Swift + possible JV coach TBD Varsity Contemporary Coach: Sarah Kaye + assistant coach TBD PERFORMANCES & COMPETITIONS: The Dance Team is very active at school games and events during the First Semester. Initial training is focused on game dances and delivering a variety of quality performances. Once our football game commitment is fulfilled, we move into new training to learn our competition dances. Dance Team also participates in our Hot Cocoa Winter Showcase. After the Holidays, a few more game performances to support TP Basketball and our competition season heats up with JV, Varsity and the Extra Competition Dancers competing at Regional events. In March, both Varsity and the Extra Competition Dancers attend Nationals on an overnight trip out of town! Things don t wind down once competition is over we have our year-end performance, Expression Session Concert in June. AFTER SCHOOL TEAM PRACTICES: JV and Varsity Hip-Hop will practice after school 3:00pm-6:00pm on Wed. & Thur. Varsity Contemporary will practice after school 3:00pm-5:00pm on Tues OUTSIDE TRAINING: All Dance Team members are encouraged to participate in outside training. ACADEMIC ELIGIBILITY: All dancers must maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA to participate CONTEMPORARY BOOT CAMP August 13th - 17th 9:00am - 1:00pm HIP-HOP BOOT CAMP August 20th - 24th 9:00am - 2:00pm
WHEN: Auditions will be held Monday, May 21st from 3:00pm-6:00pm All dancers interested in being on the Contemporary Dance Team or Advanced/Intermediate Choreography MUST attend this audition! WHERE: Torrey Pines High School Dance Room WHO: Students in Grades 8-11 are welcome to audition for the Torrey Pines Dance Team as well as the Intermediate and Advanced Choreography classes. AUDITION FORMAT: Dancers will be taught an audition piece and will then be called in groups to perform in front of Independent Judges. Dancers will audition by assigned numbers and scores will be given to those numbers only. Dancers are judged by their mastery of technique, showmanship, confidence, style and creative choices. Actual tryout scores will remain confidential. The audition will be conducted at the Judges and Ms. Kaye s discretion with the sole intent of selecting dancers for the appropriate class or team. ALL Dancers must audition for class or team placement annually. ATTIRE: Boys: Black dance or black workout clothing. Shoes optional. Girls: Black leggings or shorts with a fitted black top, shoes optional. Hair must be pulled back off the neck. No jewelry, no gum. The Judges decisions are FINAL and may not be appealed. Ms. Kaye will send all class placements to the TPHS counselors for the 2018-2019 school year. The Audition results will determine in which of the classes the student will ultimately be placed. In the event a student is not selected for either the Varsity Team, Junior Varsity team, Advanced Choreography or Intermediate Choreography based on tryout performance, their school counselor will automatically change their schedule to Dance PE. The school offers a regular Dance PE class, as well as several other PE options. Online Health is offered in dance PE.
