I n the fourth year of a three-class tournament, three new championship teams emerged. Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted and Rochester Century both won their first titles in their first tournament appearances. Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted upset the defending champions from Sleepy Eye St. Mary s in the semifinals and went on to claim the Class A title. Rochester Century knocked off the Cretin- Derham Hall dynasty to win the championship in Class AAA. In Class AA, the St. Cloud Cathedral Crusaders won their fifth title in their 11th tournament appearance. BASEBALL Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted, Rochester Century win first titles; St. Cloud Cathedral wins fifth By Ellen Giloy 2003 REVIEW Class A In the Class A tournament, the Lakers of Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted (18-9) walked away with their first title in their first appearance. The victory gave the school its first state title in any sport. The Lakers clinched the championship with a 6-4 victory over Win-E-Mac of Erskine (18-6). It was the second tournament appearance for the Patriots. Their highest finish was as runners-up in 2000. Third baseman Josiah Hagemann led the Lakers with two hits in three at-bats in the championship game. He ripped a three-run shot down the left line in the first inning, and added a solo blast to leftcenter field in the third. Hagemann went 6-for-10 during the tournament with eight RBI. Second baseman Brad Koosman and first baseman Tom Bobrowske also added two hits apiece for the Lakers. Pitcher Luke Gagnon struck out the side in the seventh inning to seal the victory. Gagnon threw five strikeouts and scattered eight hits throughout the game. Centerfielder Eric Hoffman led the Win-E-Mac offense. He hit a two-run homer in the first inning and had a tworun triple in the fifth. Pitcher Dustin Vedbraaten also went 4-for-4 at the plate and scored two runs. In semifinal play, Howard Lake- Waverly-Winsted defeated the defending champions from Sleepy Eye St. Mary s 4-3. The Lakers broke open the scoreless game with four runs in the fifth inning. Hagemann started the scoring by blasting an 0-2 pitch for a two-run triple. Centerfielder Matt Streich added a two-run double later in the inning. The Lakers hung on to win as the Knights scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh on four Laker errors. On the other side of the bracket, Win-E-Mac defeated the 2002 runners-up from Menahga 3-1. Eric Hoffman paced the Patriots with a tworun double to left-center in the second inning. Winning pitcher Justin Moran allowed seven hits, striking out four and walking none. In the quarterfinals, Howard Lake-Waverly- Winsted had to come from behind to defeat Wabasso 6-5 in eight innings. The Lakers trailed 5-4 in the eighth inning with two outs and nobody on when a fly foul to right that would have ended the game was dropped. Luke Gagnon followed with a triple to the right filed corner. Gagnon scored the winning run on Josiah Hagemann s single to right center. Tom Bobrowske also homered for the Lakers in the bottom of the third inning. In the third-place match-up, Sleepy Eye St. Mary s defeated Menahga. The game was a rematch of last year s championship game, which Sleepy Eye St. Mary s won 9-8. This year, the Knights scored in all but two innings to beat the Braves 11-4. Catcher Andy Cook led the Knights with four RBI. Pitcher Drew Rasmussen, second baseman Zach Etter, and first baseman Jeff Marjamaa all hit home runs for Menahga. The first-time qualifiers from Wabasso beat Chatfield 11-2 in the consolation championship. Wabasso first baseman David Riley drove in three runs for the Rabbits. Pitcher Matt Samyn went 2-for-5 at the plate for Wabasso. He allowed only four hits in the game with five strikeouts and three walks. Royalton and Babbitt-Embarrass/ Tower-Soudan (BEST) rounded out the Class A tournament field. Class AA After a one-year absence from the championship podium, the St. Cloud Cathedral Crusaders (22-6) returned to their winning ways. They defeated Breck School of Golden Valley 12-2 to claim their fifth title in their 11th overall appearance. The win was an improvement on last year s sixth-place finish. The Crusaders won previous titles in 1977, 1980, 1988, and 2001, and they made additional appearances in 1976, 1981, 1987, 1995, 1999, and 2002. Breck School (23-3) was making its second appearance, but first since 1999. The Mustangs have never won a state title. St. Cloud Cathedral trailed 2-0 in the title game, before exploding for nine runs in the fourth inning. Designated hitter Dave Carlson started the hit parade with a with a lead-off home run. The next eight batters reached base on a variety of hits, walks, and errors. When it was all over, Breck pitcher Liam O Hagen was out of the game and the Crusaders had sent 15 men to the plate. St. Cloud Cathedral also had good pitching from Peter Burg. He pitched the complete game with seven walks, seven hits, and seven strikeouts. Burg also picked off four Breck players at first base. Right fielder Mike Schmidt and first baseman Scott Halupczok both had two hits and two RBI apiece for the Crusaders. O Hagen and catcher Andrew Spevacek each had two hits for Breck School. Before being pulled, O Hagen allowed seven hits, four walks, and one strikeout. In the semifinals, St. Cloud Cathedral St. Cloud Cathedral pitcher Peter Burg puts the ball in motion. The Crusaders claimed their fifth title with a 12-2 victory over Breck School, Golden Valley, in the Class AA championship game. 20-20 PHOTOGRAPHIC / www.20-20photo.com Continued on page 49 38 Baseball 2002-2003 YEARBOOK & RECORD BOOK Minnesota State High School League
