No sign-up necessary. To be judged by designated/non-partisan Livestock Committee Members. The following points will be used in selecting the winners: Educational Display... 50% Record Book... 25% Interview... 25% TOTAL... 100% BETTY CRIVELLI MEMORIAL SWINE AWARD For best Swine Exhibit - Breeding and/or Market by a 4-H or FFA Exhibitor. First awarded in 1984 by an anonymous donor, this year's award is donated by an anonymous donor. A plaque will be given to each year's winner. Decisions will be made by the swine judge. WALTER CRIVELLI AWARD For Outstanding Beef Exhibit. To be awarded to the best all around beef exhibit, either market or breeding. This award will be designated by the judge. BEST PUREBRED BARROW Mike McDaniel of Advanced Auto Body will sponsor an award for the Best purebred barrow shown at the Napa Town & Country Fair. This award is to be chosen by the judge. The purpose of this award is to promote purebred barrows as show pigs. Any 4-H or FFA member entered in the fair will be eligible for this award. BEEF CARCASS CONTEST The Market Beef Carcass Contest is sponsored by the Napa Solano Cattlemen s Association. The winner will receive a Champion Belt Buckle sponsored by the association. There is no entry fee and all steers sold at the Junior Livestock Auction and processed through the fair s designated harvest facility are automatically entered. The Carcass Contest is scored using completely objective measurements taken by the carcass grader at the fair's harvest facility, Los Banos Abattoir. A carcass score starts with the Yield Grade (YG), which is a numerical score. Additional points are added based upon the measurements of Hot Carcass Weight (HCW), External Fat Thickness (FT) (Backfat), Ribeye Area (REA) and Quality Grade (QG). Those point values can be found on the Data Sheet Key available on the fairs website. Points for the four additional factors are added to the Yield Grade to result in a final score, known as the Index on the scoresheet. The lower the score the better. Note on the key that ''bonus'' points are negative and ''penalty'' points are positive. A score of zero is of no particular significance. On the sample scoresheet, taken from another fair a few years ago, the winner has a negative final score. That takes a very good steer, but it happens. The scoring key shows that more is not always better. HCW and FT have no ''bonus'' points. There is a desirable middle range outside of which results in a ''penalty''. REA is similar. A bigger ribeye is desirable up to a certain point. Beyond that point is not as economically desirable, so the ''bonus'' points diminish and eventually become ''penalty' 'points. It is all about balance. For example, a carcass with a Prime quality grade usually has a poorer yield grade.
