The Leading Leading Edge Edge Monthly Newsletter of the - September 2017 - I couldn t imagine a more beautiful sunset to end the day or smoother flying conditions when I went down to the tip of Long Point this week. The flight was hands off most of the way down and back from the secluded beaches. President s Message The cool summer we had is yielding way to a warm week or two as we head into the autumn flying season. As such, I decided to try a little flight down to Long Point to catch the sunset and get a little time flying on a nice stable almost windless evening this past week. I expect to get another few weeks on the amphibs before switching back to bush tires for the Fall, but the call of the wild will keep me wanting to get back up to Muskoka and likely Eastern Ontario a few more times before I make the changeover back to wheels only. It was great to see our members out at the many events this summer including the UPAC Convention, Aviation Fun Day and of course our own KWRAA fly-ins. With the Tiger Boys fly-in this weekend and the Bushhawk Creek Barbecue on the 23 rd, I expect to see a few more of you out enjoying this great hobby we have and visiting the other pilots and builders. In this issue of The Leading Edge, you will find a few photos of the MacPat fly-in at Metz field, a few photos of my evening trip to Long Point, and a few photos from the UPAC Convention. There have also been additions to the For Sale and Wanted postings on the last page, so be sure to check those out. Thanks to Lee Coulman for his story at the September meeting about the day he flew over to the Brussels aerodrome and spent a bit of time getting to know the owner and his family. Lee had a good number of interesting photos of the aircraft based at Brussels and shared part of a barnstorming movie that was made there and starred a local actress. Lee and I also shared a few stories about the trip we had planned to Kelowna and the unfortunate cancellation due to weather. Luckily, it appears the weather may have changed for the better at least for a while 2017 is going to be a great year for KWRAA! - Dan Page 1 of 6

MacPat Fly-in near Arthur Ontario Mac and Pat McCulloch hosted the annual Metz Field fly-in on September 2, 2017. The turnout was not great, but the usual suspects all showed up to enjoy a great day of flying, food, and camaraderie. Scott flew in from Brantford in the C150 and I flew in in my Highlander amphib., of course! There was a nice mix of salads, side dishes and desserts brought by the attendees. It was great to see Gary Wolf in attendance, especially since he flew in in his Ercoupe. A number of pilots in the area elected to just drive over to Metz Field with their wives since it was so close to home. The weather was nice but the breeze made it just a little cool. Page 2 of 6

Thanks again to Mac and Pat for getting things set up for our arrival and opening your home for anyone in need of facilities. After a great lunch and nice visit, everyone came back out to watch the planes take off home. The steady cool wind was straight down runway 14 making sure every plane was off the strip well before the intersection. Thank you to everyone that made this year s fly-in season possible! Airstrip owners, KWRAA executive, the Fly-in and Special Events Committee, and the many members and spouses that showed up, brought food for the lunch, and even helped set up and clean up in order to make these fly-ins possible for the rest of us! We really do appreciate your generosity and efforts. BBQ Master Mike made sure everyone got a chunk of animal protein done to their liking. Although they re not our own events, a number of our members enjoy attending these events Tiger Boys Fly-in (CNC4 Guelph) Information sheet available at: https://www.facebook.com/guelphairpark/ Sept. 16 & 17. Bushhawk Creek Barbecue (TJ and LJ Lillam Farm, Straffordville) Another great annual event that attracts pilots from all over Southern Ontario Sept. 23 & 24. Page 3 of 6

UPAC 2017 Gustavo Corugo (Gusair) was at UPAC and snapped a number of great photos of C-FDEP Some of us like to make an entrance Anybody recognize this motley crew? Although things started a little slow at the UPAC convention, likely due to the weather and stiff winds in the morning, things really picked up in the afternoon on Saturday. Page 4 of 6

Long Point Sunset Trip It was already getting late the other night when I decided to go flying for a little while, but given the light wispy clouds, I figured we were in for a pretty good sunset. I considered my options and decided to go for broke and head for Long Point, Ontario. The Leading Edge When I flew across the inner bay to get there, I had seen a number of boats leaving the point to return to the marinas at Port Dover, Port Rowan, and Turkey Point. When I arrived, the beach was secluded and Erie ly calm. I knew that my arrival would be just in time for the show. I walked on the beach for a while and enjoyed the serenity of the sunset and soothing sounds of the gentle waves on the sand. After beaching the plane, I walked back a ways to get a couple of shots. Page 5 of 6 As I made my way back across the inner bay, things brightened up just a bit as I gained altitude, but I knew I would be making use of my night rating as I returned to Brantford.
