Waller weekly news 20 February, 2015 Heart Testa makes the Randwick finish line his on Saturday in the Group 3 Southern Cross Stakes. The stable produced five winners this week, highlighted by Heart Testa saluting at Group 3 level for Gerry Harvey, Mr KT Nam and Don Hancock in the colours of the great mare Lotteria. A long-time supporter of the stable, and the industry in general, Mr Harvey also celebrated a winner in his own colours later in the day with Telepathic s first up victory for the stable. Wednesday s winners were also all greatly celebrated with Ballet Suite our first winner in the Coolmore navy blue, Vanbrugh another supertalented 2yo winner on debut and Danjeu demoralising his rivals in the staying event. Saturday at Rosehill boasts plenty of exciting racing with Catkins aimed at continuing Red Tracer s domination of the Millie Fox having won the last three for the stable. The Hobartville is a must-watch with Chris touting the field as the best he s seen in the race since he s been in Australia while the undercard is equally as fascinating for the stable with the highly anticipated return of Star Thoroughbred s Law having been gelded and classy mare Intimate Moment having her first run for the stable. Meanwhile at Flemington, exciting 3yo son of I Am Invincible Brazen Beau resumes in a small but select field of sprinters in the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning. Still carrying Ontrack Thoroughbreds gold colours, the exciting colt is destined for the breeding barn at Darley, hopefully after a successful autumn carnival and Royal Ascot assault in the coming months. Good luck to the owners of all of our runners over the coming week - watch the video preview on the website for Chris and Liam s thoughts on our runners. CHRIS WALLER RACING CHRIS WALLER RACING WINNERS THIS WEEK Heart testa 5yo G by Testa Rossa Graciela (Flying Spur) He may not be big in stature but he makes up for it in heart and will to win as he showed once again at Randwick on Saturday in the Southern Cross Stakes at Group 3 level. He was ridden on Saturday by Jason Collet who has have struck up a great record with him having been in the saddle for seven of the diminutive geldings eight wins. Saturday s win meant that this consistent sort has taken his prize money earnings to just shy of $500,000 and although he has won up to the 1350m, the 1200m of Saturday s race seems to suit him ideally nowadays. His rider had him in a great striking position throughout the race, sitting third on the outside of the leaders in the best part of the track. Once they got balanced up in the straight he strode to the lead at the 300m mark and was kept up to the mark by Jason as the tenacious mare Driefontein fought back in the Star Thoroughbreds colours. Thankfully Heart Testa had enough in reserve to hold all comers at bay to record his eighth victory from just 23 starts. Telepathic 4yo M by Mossman - Telepathy (Conatus) Telepathic added to a successful day for owner Gerry Harvey who also shares in the ownership of the aforementioned Heart Testa. Her rider Jason Collet also doubled up for the stable having been in the saddle for this ex-kiwi mare s first up win over 1400m at Randwick on Saturday. Having performed very well at last years Brisbane and Melbourne Carnivals when under the care of NZ trainers Dean and Donna Logan, it was decided that she would stay in Australia to continue her racing career. She certainly got off to an ideal start taking out Saturdays BM85 contest under another copybook ride from Jason Collet. Like Heart Testa earlier, he had Telepathic in a beautiful position throughout the race sitting fourth as Countryman set a decent pace. In a similar fashion to Heart Testa, he positioned his mount wider once they straightened up in search of the better ground. This proved to be a winning move as this likeable mare will no doubt improve from this run and will hopefully progress through the grades. Chris will plan her campaign with a view to earning some further valuable black type as she has already been placed at Group 3 level at last years Brisbane winter carnival. She also ran midfield after a luckless run in the Group 1 Queensland Derby so she certainly has shown the potential to make her mark at a higher level. Claire Bird, Gerry Harvey s racing manager, gives Telepathic a welldeserved pat. Thanks to Bradley Photographers for this week s winner photos www.bradleyphotos.com.au

3 Vanbrugh 2yo G by Encosta De Lago - Soho Secret (Lucky Owners) Vanbrugh made an ideal start to his racing career when winning on debut in the 1200m 2yo maiden at Randwick on Wednesday. Having shown promise in his most recent trial, he built on this with an impressive win. He was settled at the rear of the field and jockey Blake Shinn waited until well into the straight before making his run. Once he angled into the clear and got balanced up, he made relentless progress to edge in front close to the winning post and win from a Godolphin owned duo in second and third. This was a very smart performance considering where he came from in the run. He will no doubt gain great benefit from this initial success and will only continue to improve with time and experience. With his breeding and racing style he should hopefully develop into a classy middle distance type in time. Selected by Mick Flanagan from Widden s draft at the Inglis Easter Sale last year for just $100,000, he looks a good value purchase for Kentucky-based owners, Merriebelle Stables. Danjeu 4yo G by Montjeu - Wanna (Danehill Dancer) Danjeu continued his good recent form with a comprehensive all the way success over 2400m at Randwick on Wednesday. The son of Montjeu is certainly now starting to fulfill his potential and looks to be an exciting stayer in the making. This was only his fifth race day start having had one race start in the UK when in the care of John Gosden. On Wednesday, Blake Shinn elected to take luck out of the equation and sent Danjeu straight to the front from the start. He went on to control the race throughout and cruised away in the straight for a decisive victory under minimal urgings from his rider. Chris has stated that he will set the targets low at this stage for the horse and slowly progress through the grades. In his opinion the horse will continue to improve with time as he acclimatises in Australia. Ballet suite 3yo F by High Chaparral - Suitely (Woodman) Racing in the famous Coolmore colours and having her first start for the stable, this promising filly made a very impressive start to her preparation. She was bred by fellow stable owners in Raffles Farm, who of course own stable star Sacred Falls and was purchased by Anthony Penfold for $310,000 at Karaka. This now certainly looks like a wise investment as she recorded her second win from four career starts when taking out the fillies 1400m event at Randwick on Wednesday. The inform Blake Shinn rode all three winners for the stable on the day with Ballet Suite relaxing beautifully at the rear of the field. She was still only in tenth position with 400 left to run, however once asked to finish off she ran home strongly down the outside to gain a smart first up success. Her breeding suggests she should have no problems stepping up in distance and her main target is the Gr.1 Australian Oaks this Autumn. Chris will now work out a path towards that target which is also likely to include a final lead up run in the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes which is two weeks prior to the Oaks.

CHRIS WALLER RACING SIX STAYERS CONTEST Parramatta Cup The stable s stayers are out will be out in full force this Saturday aiming to secure back-to-back Listed Parramatta Cups for Chris Waller Racing. Having won the race with Silky Red Boxer in 2007, Hawk Island in 2011 and Opinion last year the race is a time honoured staying event run at Rosehill that up until last year was run over 2000m before being stripped back a half furlong to be run over 1900m. This year CWR will be represented by a sextet of starters including Permit, Secessio, Grand Marshal, Diametric, Our Voodoo Prince and Black Jag in the field of 13 possible starters. With all coming into the race with a different story to tell, Permit appears to be reinvigorated having had a week at the farm, Secessio and Our Voodoo Prince need to show some form in this according to Chris, Grand Marshal has been racing well but may need further, Diametric should relish the step up in distance now that he s settling better and Black Jag will be sure to run his usual honest race, this time in the hands of Glyn Schofield. Pictured above, Hawk Island s special Parramatta Cup win for Mr Ken Hunt. The multiple stakes-winner and Group 1 runner up is now looked after by CWR work rider Danielle Podlewski. Athletic, precocious colt by beneteau This outstanding recent acquisition by Star Thoroughbreds a son of the current leading first season sire, Beneteau (Redoute s Choice). Interestingly, like this colt, three of Beneteau s most precocious 2yos are from Mr Prospector line mares. Also in his favour is that, like the stable s brilliant 2yo winner last week in Always Alison, he is from a Fusaichi Pegasus mare. To date, his dam has produced three to race to date and all have been winners and this athletic and precocious youngster looks set to continue the mare s brilliant record. The team s inspection notes say it all A running type of colt who is typical of the breed. Good scope, athletic gait and looks a 2yo runner. Just $13,500 inc GST for a 10% share. Head to www.starthoroughbreds.com.au for more information.
