T e c h n i c a l - V o c a t i o n a l E d u c a t i o n O v e r v i e w H e a v y D u t y E q u i p m e n t T e c h n i c i a n O v e r v i e w In 2013, Manitoba Education released the document Technical-Vocational Education Overview to provide the philosophical and pedagogical underpinnings for curriculum development and the teaching of courses in the Senior Years Technology Education Program. This overview presents educators with the vision and goals of technical-vocational education (TVE) in Manitoba. Topics include the following: QQ QQ QQ QQ QQ QQ QQ curriculum revitalization and renewal curriculum framework and implementation articulation of programming assessment and reporting safety employability/essential skills and career development sustainable development The TVE curriculum includes Grades 9 to 12 courses in a variety of areas, including heavy duty equipment technician. Grades 9 to 12 Heavy Duty Equipment Technician: Manitoba Technical-Vocational Curriculum Framework of Outcomes identifies the goals, general learning outcomes (GLOs), and specific learning outcomes (SLOs) for nine heavy duty equipment technician courses. This framework is intended for use in all Manitoba schools teaching heavy duty equipment technician courses as part of the Senior Years Technology Education Program. Students who have completed the heavy duty equipment technician courses can seek entry-level employment as an apprentice technician in any of these three trades from Apprenticeship Manitoba: QQ QQ QQ heavy duty equipment technician agricultural equipment technician truck and transport mechanic Graduates can also seek employment in the following areas: service consultant, parts advisor, parts rebuilder, maintenance technician, specialty/after-market technician, sales consultant, tools and equipment representative, and military vehicle technicians. In order to be qualified and to continue as a technician, students must seek apprenticeship and continue postsecondary training. Graduates are typically employed by agriculture equipment dealerships, trucking companies, mining companies, independent service centres, specialty repair shops, parts suppliers, sales and leasing companies, parts recyclers and manufacturers, organizations with Overview 1

fleets of equipment, truck body repair centres, and the military. The education requirements for entry to the heavy duty equipment industry vary from high school graduation and/or completion of a technicalvocational program at the secondary level for entry-level employment, to college, apprenticeship, and university for related employment in the industry. These heavy duty equipment technician courses provide a foundation for students to go directly to work, or to continue into post-secondary education in heavy duty equipment technology, mechanical engineering, design manufacturing, management in the heavy duty equipment industry, and education and training. Graduates of this program can be found working on many types of equipment such as small engines, cars, heavy equipment, trains, and ocean-going ships. Students who have completed the heavy duty equipment technician courses will be able to do the following: QQ QQ QQ QQ QQ QQ QQ QQ QQ perform basic maintenance and service perform a vehicle safety inspection complete repairs and servicing complete preventative maintenance procedures perform repairs related to drivability concerns understand and use computerized systems communicate and work with peers, employers, and customers think logically and make decisions work independently or as part of a team QQ QQ QQ QQ QQ demonstrate the ability for lifelong learning to enhance their skills manage time demonstrate mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity solve problems demonstrate employability skills Implementation of Heavy Duty Equipment Technician Courses To receive a Senior Years Technical Education diploma, a student must complete eight departmentally developed courses from an approved technical-vocational cluster, together with 16 compulsory credits and six optional credits. The grade level in which the courses are offered is a local school-based decision, but it is highly recommended that the sequencing of credits follow the schedule set out at the end of this introduction. Most courses include learning outcomes related to the description, diagnosis, and repair of heavy duty equipment components and systems. Cross-curricular learning outcomes, or essential skills from subject areas including, but not limited to, information and communication technologies, science, English language arts, and mathematics, are to be integrated into the authentic learning activities of the courses. Learning outcomes dealing with the following topics are also integrated into most courses: 2 Grades 9 to 12 Heavy Duty Equipment Technician

QQ QQ QQ QQ QQ QQ health and safety sustainability ethical and legal standards employability skills career opportunities evolution, technological progression, and emerging trends In most courses, the emphasis is on applied learning activities. For instructional purposes, the sequence of learning outcomes can vary based on the learning activities within the course. Teachers are advised to select the learning activities best suited to teach the learning outcomes, based on a variety of factors, such as access to resources or regional needs. The curriculum is not sequential. In other words, learning outcomes might be taught in an order different from how they appear in this document. In light of rapid changes in technology, teachers are encouraged to update learning activities in order to meet the needs of students. Level 1 Apprenticeship In order to teach the heavy duty equipment technician courses described in this document, teachers must refer to the heavy duty equipment technician curriculum documents produced by Apprenticeship Manitoba, which are available at <www.gov.mb.ca/tce/apprent/apprentice/ curriculum>. Grades 9 to 12 Heavy Duty Equipment Technician: Manitoba Technical-Vocational Curriculum Framework of Outcomes consists of nine courses from Grades 9 to 12, which make up Manitoba Education and Advanced Learning s high school heavy duty equipment technician curriculum. In order to earn their Senior Years Technology Education diploma, students need to complete the eight mandatory courses from Grades 10 to 12. Students do not need to complete the optional Grade 9 course in order to graduate from the Senior Years Technology Education Program. More information on graduation requirements can be found at <www.edu.gov.mb.ca/k12/policy/grad_require. html>. The specific learning outcomes in the eight mandatory courses include all of the objectives found in the Apprenticeship Manitoba training for Heavy Duty Equipment Technician, Level 1. In some cases, the Apprenticeship objectives have been reworded to make them more consistent with the frameworks or more appropriate for high school students. The Apprenticeship documents provide necessary, detailed information and clarification of the high school frameworks learning outcomes. Teachers must teach all of the objectives and content found in the Apprenticeship documents that are referenced in the frameworks of outcomes. This will ensure that students will have met all of the requirements for Level 1 certification from Apprenticeship Manitoba. Heavy duty equipment technician programs delivering the eight mandatory courses are eligible for accreditation with Apprenticeship Manitoba. For more information Overview 3

Students obtaining an accumulated average of 70 percent or higher in the eight mandatory courses in an accredited heavy duty equipment technician program may have met the requirements for their Level 1 Apprenticeship for Heavy Duty Equipment Technician. Trade Safety Awareness Manual Apprenticeship Manitoba has developed a Trade Safety Awareness Unit, whose purpose is to increase student awareness of trade safety in the workplace. All students, including those in high school, studying a designated trade must complete this seven-hour unit. The learning outcomes from the Trade Safety Awareness Unit have been incorporated into Goal 1 of this curriculum. Heavy Duty Equipment Technician Goals and General Learning Outcomes (GLOs) Curriculum goals outline the major curriculum components in addition to the general or across-thecurriculum learning goals for the subject area. The learning outcomes for each heavy duty equipment technician course were developed based on the following goals and general learning outcomes. Please note that some heavy duty equipment technician courses do not address all these GLOs. Goal 1: Describe and apply appropriate safety practices for heavy duty equipment technology. GLO 1.1: Describe and apply appropriate safety practices for heavy duty equipment technicians. GLO 1.2: Demonstrate knowledge of the Trade Safety Awareness Manual. Goal 2: Identify, select, use, and maintain tools, equipment, materials, and consumables. GLO 2.1: Identify, select, use, and maintain tools, equipment, materials, and consumables. Specific Learning Outcomes Grades 9 to 12 Heavy Duty Equipment Technician: Manitoba Technical-Vocational Curriculum Framework of Outcomes identifies specific learning outcomes (SLOs) for use in all Manitoba schools teaching Grades 9 to 12 heavy duty equipment technician courses as part of the Senior Years Technology Education Program. Specific learning outcome statements define what students are expected to achieve by the end of the course. It is essential that students learn safety practices and employability skills; therefore, with a few exceptions, all SLOs related to safety and employability skills are repeated from course to course. Course Descriptions Course titles, descriptions, and codes for the nine heavy duty equipment technician courses follow. Curriculum Implementation Dates During voluntary implementation, teachers have the option of teaching the entire new draft curriculum as soon as Manitoba Education and Advanced Learning releases it on the Technology Education website. Teachers also have the option of teaching courses from the previous curriculum. Teachers who implement courses before system-wide implementation need to ensure that students who are already taking courses from the previous curriculum achieve all SLOs with a minimum of redundancy. Voluntary implementation for all heavy duty equipment technician courses began in the fall of 2013 and will continue until their respective system-wide implementation dates.
