FISHING NEWS San Remo and Surrounds Newsletter APRIL 2016 WHATS NEW AT JBT Firstly I would like to apologise for the lack of newsletter last week, as it was extremely busy in the shop it just simply slipped our minds. We hope that every one had a safe and fish filled Easter long weekend and just remember it is now school holidays so remember that if you are planning on heading down to the Island there will be an increased amount of traffic, drive safely and enjoy! fishing@jimsbaittackle.com.au IN THIS ISSUE Elephant season approaches Labour day L/Wend The perfect accompany to any fish Autumn reports Photo of the month WHATS HAPPENED THE PAST MONTH The frustrating days of fishing continued this month and what made them worse was when you got back to the ramp and the boat that was fishing a few hundred metres up from you is there cleaning plenty of fish at the table. It s always a dilemma when you are fishing and not seeing any action for long periods of time, do you stay or do you move. It s a question impossible to answer and a decision you just need to make and stand by there is no right or wrong. Whiting was a perfect example of that this month with both decisions paying off at times and for no real reason either way. We saw some very good bags of whiting this month all with the same trend that the fish have got smaller. We did find that many were caught in the time of the day you wouldn t really say was ideal, middle of the afternoon tide changes and not the very early morning or late evening as has been over the last few months. Plenty of small pinkies continued however we did see several around the 40cm mark from during the month. The corals area the best with several coming from the western channel. It is possible to catch Calamari anywhere in the bay all you have to do is actually fish for them. If you are fishing in some of the deeper areas for Calamari you will need to change your method slightly and the best, I find is a paternoster rig with a very heavy sinker a bright coloured jig or jigs then drop it over and wait. You can use the same rig anywhere you fish in the bay and especially offshore then every 15mins or so give the reel a wind till you find the depth they are in. good catches are still being reported from San Remo jetty and the beaches at Woolamai and Ventnor. 1
LABOUR DAY LONG WEEKEND FISHING COMP To follow on from the Australia Day long weekend fishing comp we decided to go with a Labour Day long weekend comp. The comp ran for Saturday and Sunday with the target species being Flathead, Whiting and Squid. A lot of people took part with Saturday proving to being the better of the 2 days most of the fish weighed was caught Saturday evening. Sunday proved a real struggle for some with mot failing to even get a bight from a Toadie. Overall the comp proved fairly reasonable weighing in just over 30 fish. Results John Aitken got the closest squid with 380g only 102g of the secret weight Pat Gleeson got the closest Whiting with 395g only 6g off the secret weight Anne got the closest Flathead with 425g only 13g off the secret weight Thanks to everyone that took part in the comp and look forward to seeing you at our next one. 2
STOCK TAKE SALE + FISHING FESTIVAL On the Labour day long weekend we also had our one day a year stocktake sale starting from 6am people came nice and early (and in the dark) to get an early bargain. San Remo also had it s annual Fishing Village Festival which featured fishing demos, market stalls and a carnival bringing many people into town for the day. The day started cold but once the sun came out so did the people and bargains went quick. If you missed out our one day a year sale happens every Sunday of the Labour day long weekend, put it in your calendar for next year. With Winter fast approaching we find our selves putting on the fire and not wanting to head outside which can make it hard to get to the shop. THE FISH WE LOVE TO HATE: Elephants This time of the year also sees the start of those fish that divide the fishing community, the Elephant fish you either love them or you would rather be catching draftboards in the middle of Winter. I have customers that will just start fishing now they are showing up and those who refuse to fish in the bay until they disappear but either way they are starting to show and I had several reported over the recent weeks. There is no secret or special rig you have to go off and buy as your snapper or gummy type rigs, with slightly smaller hooks will do just add bait, pilchard or squid. I myself am not a fan but maybe for some of us lucky enough to be able to fish offshore and land the odd Mako or a feed of flathead for the freezer we are just spoilt. There are however plenty that like eating these fish and they tell me they are very good in curries and for making fish cakes. Everyone has an opinion to the best way to prepare, eat that day, put in the fridge for a day or so or do or don t freeze. Whichever you prefer one thing is a given the sooner they are bleed and cleaned then stored in the esky on ice the better they are. If you are going to chase the elephants try using your whiting gear or lighter snapper tackle and give the kids a go as on lighter tackle. They put up a bit of a fight and the kids will learn how to use a rod and reel correctly. While there is no minimum size the bag limit is one per person. CREAMY TARTARE SAUCE The perfect accompany to any fish Sometimes nothing is more satisfying than a freshly caught grilled or fried fish with some fresh creamy Whole egg mayonnaise Lemon Juice (to taste) 1tsp x Capers 1 x Gherkin Parsley Pepper This recipe serves 4 1. In a bowl mix together Whole egg mayonnaise and chopped up gherkin. 2. Chop capers then add as desired to the mayonnaise mix, pepper to taste then garnish with parsley. 3.
