1 Members Newsletter Summer 2018 Clubhouse Update Members may recall the club had an option of purchasing the old JLM preschool which was a portable building. There was extensive consultation with Bass Coast Shire Council, builders, removal contractors and others. The time pressure for the removal of the building from its site, combined with high costs for removal to a storage site, the committee decided not to proceed with this option. The Committee would like to thank Councillor Clare LeServe for all her help in trying to secure the preschool for the club. On a positive note our submission to the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning and the Foreshore Committee has resulted in an inprinciple approval for the clubhouse land we are seeking on the Corinella trailer parking area. There is still a lot of work to do particularly around updating our business plan and presenting that to the Foreshore committee and DELWP. In conjunction with the business plan we are preparing our Council Planning Permit for the site and building. A big thank you to club member Kevin Downey from Yarra Building Surveyor Group. Kevin has kindly donated his time to the clubhouse project and is preparing the permit application to lodge with council for the clubhouse site. The application process is well underway. Work will continue on the clubhouse project to ensure the club has a place to call home. An update will be presented to members at the Fish Filleting night. Fishing Co-Ordinator appointed Committee member Mark Irvine has been appointed as the clubs Fishing Co-ordinator. Mark will be reviewing the fishing comp calendar to ensure the competitions remain relevant to members. Mark will also be responsible for the smooth running of the clubs fishing comps including the comp BBQ s. Assisted by committee member Mick Egeberg they will be looking at the comps currently being held and how they can be improved to attract greater member numbers. An important part of this review will be engaging with members to get their views on the current comp calendar and changes to the comp structure they would like to see. If you have any feedback or ideas on competitions, Mark can be contacted on: Corinella Boating & angling Club Fishing Comp Coordinator Ph: Keith Smith Whiting Challenge The club held its third annual Whiting Challenge over a ten-day period at the beginning of December. Members fished throughout the comp period, and the first prize was eventually taken out by Kev Ryan for a 460gm whiting. There was also a mystery weight prize on offer. Allan Willoughby won this prize for his 320gm whiting which was caught on the same day as Kev. 1

Whiting Winner for First 2018 Comp Great weather saw strong competition for the first of our 2018 comps, with whiting and squid being the target species. Richard Harper caught a good number of whiting as did several other anglers. However, others had patchier results. Murray Wannon won first prize with a 650gm whiting. Australia Day Competition Heats Up The gummy and snapper competition held over the Australia Day weekend had an excellent attendance with good number of competitors entering, and some good catches recorded. 2

3 Rob Kelson took out the gummy category with a 2.23kg gummy weighed in. Les Smith won the snapper category with a 1.1kg pinkie. The BBQ was held at the Corinella Rotunda with a large turnout of members attending, despite the almost 40 C temperature. Fishing Co-ordinators Mark Irvine and Mick Egeberg did a sterling job with competition prizes. A quality tackle box and fishing rod (to Rob Kelson) and snapper net and knife sharpener awarded (to Les Smith). San Remo BBQ Cancelled It was disappointing to cancel the planned San Remo BBQ event. Unfortunately, the event didn t have enough registrations to go ahead. The BBQ menu included a number of seafood dishes and other delicious fare. With lack of support, the club couldn t justify the cost of the event. The funds will go towards the fish-filleting night. Sorry to those members that registered and were looking forward to the San Remo BBQ cruise. To ensure that events created by the committee actually go ahead we ask that members register early for the event to ensure that we can adequately cater and arrange transport. Members can register in a number of ways, via SMS, the club s website or by contacting anyone of the committee members. Fish Filleting Demo & Tasting Night This event is fully booked so great to see good response to the event. Staff from the San Remo Fisherman s Co-op will be demonstrating how to fillet and prepare a range of fish species commonly caught in the area. A professional cook will be preparing a tasting pate of various fish served with fries and a salad for members to try. Those who registered for the event will be receiving further info in the lead up to the night. A few people are on the waiting list and will be notified of vacancies come up. Social Committee The committee headed by Allan Willoughby has also been working on improving the social aspect of the club. We have had a number of successful events over the last few months and the committee is planning more in the coming months. Game Competition Now Fishing The Game competition is running and is open until 29 April A prize pool of $1000 is up for grabs. Enter at What sort of fish qualifies? Eligible species for Game Competition are Mako, Blue Shark, Thresher Shark, Bronze Whaler, Kingfish, Tuna, any other pelagic species that may happen to be caught by chance. Gummy shark, school shark and Seven-Gill are invalid catches for the Game Competition. Great whites are protected so definitely invalid! Target species are awarded points in accordance with the clubs point scoring system. You don't have to catch a big fish to win the comp! Point scoring system table: 3

To grow the social side of the club the social committee has been expanded with Angel Horvath coming on board to help coordinate the social events the club has planned.

The committee continues to look for opportunities for social and boating events and competition formats and we expect to continue to grow. Members News Stewart English, who joined the club in September, fished with mate Rod in November. All up a not a bad day with 6 flatties, 2 pinkies, 2 silver trevally and about 30 cod!! Top catch of the day was Stewarts 5kg snapper (right). 4

5 Story by Murray Wannan - I went out in the pouring rain with a mate Friday evening (Friday after Xmas), we fished till 10 then the wind picked up we finished with 15 whiting. Every time my mate Norm would catch a decent fish I would get a bigger one. Then my rod buckled and the tip nearly touching the water. I thought it was a snapper the first fish was 47cm then the very next bait I got the larger one same size but fatter, it was hard getting photos because of the pouring rain, but I can tell you I had a huge smile, much to the disgust of my mate Norm. Club President Bob Ricketts fished Bass Straight just before Christmas and caught a 16.32kg thresher shark and some flathead (above). Allan and Gloris Willoughby fished outside on the same day and caught 10 flatties. They then headed in and fished off Coronet Bay and caught a couple of whiting. Richard Harper fished outside and brought in over 20 flatties. Kane Ricketts fished with Kelly Hocking recently and caught some great kingfish, the largest weighing in at 13.16kg (below). 5

After lunch they cruised around to Rhyll, moored again and went for coffee at the tavern, before cruising back in to Corinella. Great day out. The social committee is looking at ways that members can get together outside formal club events for social boating activities.
