Haskell County 4-H News K-State Research and Extension Camp Counselors Needed: We are in need of camp counselors ages 14 years and older for both Lakeside and Heart of Kansas camps. You must be fully VIP certified, which will take some time so please contact us ASAP if you are interested. March 16th is the deadline to turn in your VIP paperwork to be certified this year. Project Leaders Needed We need YOU to share your time and talents with the 4-H youth of Haskell County! Project leaders coordinate workshops and answer individual questions in their project area. We are looking to branch out to new project areas this year. If you can help us, please give us a call! Livestock Notebook We have started our livestock events book again this year. It will contain copies of the upcoming livestock shows, sales, camps, and clinics. Feel free to stop by the Extension Office and look through the book and make copies of the ones you are interested in. 4-H VIP A registered 4-H volunteer is an adult or teen who has completed the full VIP process including application, screening, and orientation and has been approved by the Haskell County Executive Board. For the safety of both the 4-H members and adults. Each year 4-H volunteers must apply for VIP certification or in the case of a returning volunteer, renew their status via renewal form. Both forms are available at the Extension Office. Beef Weigh-In Beef Weigh-in will be held on Sunday, March 29th at the fairgrounds from 3:00 5:00 p.m. This includes second year bucket calves and market steers. If you cannot attend weigh-in, please call prior to the weigh-in date. Sublette s B.E.S.T Afterschool Program We are again providing activities for the Afterschool program in Sublette. If you or your club are interested in gaining leadership and citizenship opportunities you should take advantage of this. We are responsible for every 2nd and 4th Monday afternoons (3:30-5:00 p.m.). Horse Project Meade County The Meade County 4-H Horse Project is hosting two training days in the basics of speed events and performance events. Both events are to be held in the Meade indoor arena. Kansas State University Jr. Meat Goat Producer Day Join us for Kansas Jr. Goat Producer Day on March 28, 2015. Presentations and demonstrations by a featured speaker, as well as K-State faculty will cover topics such as selection, facilities and general care, health and wellness, nutrition and showmanship. This interactive workshop is designed for all ages and skill levels. All participants will receive a T-shirt and complimentary lunch. Visit www.youthlivestock.ksu.edu for more information and online registration or contact the Extension Office. 4-H CAMPFERENCE 4-H Campference is for youth ages 12-14 (before January 1, 2015), and will be held May 31- June 3, 2015 at Rock Springs 4-H Center. Participants will experience the feel of a conference, while enjoying the 'camp' activities Rock Springs 4-H Center has to offer. This is a great transitional opportunity, as these tweens go from being a camper to attending educational conferences. 4-H Campference will feature workshops about opportunities in the 4-H program and how to better interact with others. Participants will meet other youth from around the state of Kansas. Register early as the space will fill on a first come basis, and Campference was full in 2014! Register online by May 1 and payment and participation form must be in the local Extension Offices on May 1. Registration and detailed information will be the State 4-H Website in March. Horse Judging Camp Beginners Section (June 2, 2015) This camp is designed for youth that have had very little experience judging horses and would like to learn more about note-taking and oral sessions. Emphasis will be placed on the placings of classes commonly seen in Kansas judging contests. Advanced Section (June 3-4, 2015) This camp is designed for youth that have had some experience to learn more about note taking and oral reasons. Emphasis will be placed on the placings and reasons of classes commonly seen in Kansas judging contests. Participants will receive a camp souvenir, Both camps will be held at Kansas State University's Weber Arena in Manhattan, KS. Registration for both sections are due May 10, 2015 with no late entries accepted. Camp will be limited to the first 30 participants for each. K-State Animal Sciences Leadership Academy The sixth annual K-State Animal Sciences Leadership Academy will be held TBA at Kansas State University s Manhattan Campus. The goal of the academy is to further develop young leaders within the livestock industry thorough engaging summer experience hosted by K- State Animal Sciences and Industry. This four day event focuses on increasing knowledge of Kansas s diverse livestock industry, as well as building participant s leadership skills. Twenty high school students will be selected to participate based upon educational, community, and agricultural involvement. The event is sponsored by the Livestock and Meat industry Council. A second Weigh In date has been scheduled for May 2 from 5-9 p.m. These weigh in dates include all sheep, goats, swine, and 1st year bucket calves. If you plan to compete in the Rate of Gain contest at the County Fair you must weigh your animals in on April 29th. The Horse project members will be meeting March 24th at 6:00pm at the Extension Office to discuss practices, shows, and fun days. Be sure to attend! 2015 District Horse Show June 30, 1015 at the Western Sate Bank Expo Center at Dodge City. Haskell County Spring Livestock Show The Haskell County Spring Livestock Show will be held on Sunday, May 3, 2015. We will begin the day with the swine show and end with the beef show. This is a great opportunity for youth to get some experience before the county fair. Each livestock family is responsible for getting at least $50 in donations to help out the show. The donations must be paid and returned to the office by April 15 in order for the sponsor to be listed on the t-shirt. The t-shirts this year will be neon orange with black ink! We will be sending out registration forms next month. Check out www.kansas4-h.org. The Kansas Shooting Sports Ambassador Applications are due March 18th! Kansas Shooting Sports Ambassadors will represent 4-H and specifically 4-H Shooting Sports for public relations purposes at special events along with general public events, peer groups, 4-H groups, schools, and media contacts. They will serve as spokespersons for the Kansas 4-H Shooting Sports program, helping to make 4-H and the Shooting Sports program more visible. Ambassadors further develop their skills in leadership, public presentation, citizenship, community service, public relations and team building. Contact the Extension Office for more information. Livestock Floor Prices at the County Fair The Livestock Show and Sale Committee has decided to change the floor policies at the county fair. The floor will remain open until 5:00pm on the Wednesday of fair. So if you are interested in buying the floor you will have to contact Lacey before 5:00pm on July 29th.
