135 On Friday 24 th March 2017, our school raised 138 for charity. Everyone dressed up in red clothes and Mrs Carpenter made some delicious red nose day cakes which School Council iced. There was a long line of people waiting to grab hold of one of these delicious cakes. All of the money that we raised has been given to Comic Relief to help people that are living in poverty. St. Andrew s Vision All the classes worked hard to draw some vision vehicles to represent the school. All the classes ideas were hung up in the school hall. After school that day parents were invited to review our ideas and stuck stickers on the one they thought represented our school the best. All the ideas were put together to make one vehicle. The vehicle that got the most votes was a fishing boat probably because St. Andrew was a fisherman. Miss Budworth drew an amazing fishing boat which now is our new vision vehicle the vehicle helps us remember our values and knowing what school really is about. We have recently taken a poll with parents, children & governors to see which values are the most important to our whole school community. These will be represented on the sails of our boat, when we have collated the results. This will then be sent out to all of our parents. On Thursday 2 nd March, St Andrews school celebrated World Book Day 2017 by dressing up as their favourite book character; many people had amazing costumes including some of the teachers! Some costumes were homemade and had been noticed by everyone in the school meaning that effort had been put into them, but all of them still looked great, homemade or shop bought. At the end of the long day we all got given a free book token each to spend on the range of special edition books made especially for World Book Day 2017. We all had On Thursday the 9 th March, a man called Hrothgar, an expert at re -enacting history, visited school to give us a Viking Day. We learned lots of interesting facts about the Vikings. Did you know; Vikings only used 3 main weapons on the battle field? They mainly conquered their enemy using just a sword, axe and spear (and a shield to protect them). During the eventful day, we also learned about the traditional Viking stories of Gods and Goddesses; about the Viking gender roles; how to build a fire; how to play the Viking game Hnefatafl; and finally what happened at a typical chief s funeral. We all thoroughly enjoyed the day, especially dressing up and getting involved with the stories and games. Page 2 P4C - Philosophy for Children Over the past few weeks, KS2 have been participating in Philosophy lessons which have been led by Tom Bigglestone. Each week we have topics or challenging questions which we discuss. We look at the arguments for all possible sides which make us think hard. He also does fun activities with us. During the lessons he asks us to sit around in a circle and when we want to put our opinion across or have good idea we pass round a squishy prink brain to take turns. We all enjoy having these lessons with Tom and we hope he keeps on coming! Mrs Ballard - Farewell We say goodbye to Mrs Ballard at the end of this Spring term. She is going to be spending more time with her family. We wish her all the best for the future and her ever growing population of ducks! I know the children, staff and parents will miss her very much. Thank you for all you have done for the children at our school and enjoy the Summer term. Our New Deputy Head We are glad to announce that Miss Hodgson is our new Deputy Head Teacher. Miss Hodgson has been teaching for twenty- four years. Previously, she taught at Mansell Infant School, Stockbridge Primary School, Marchwood Junior School and Abbotswood Junior School. Miss Hodgson started work in St Andrews School in 2014 and has taught Year 3 and Year 6. She is looking forward to working with Mrs Walker to make our learning enjoyable. She likes teaching all subjects and her favourite moment was the trip to Osmington Bay. The thing she likes most about the school is all the people that work here and the family ethos. Miss Hodgson is looking forward to helping us by taking action on the ideas of the School Council. Her interests outside the school are learning to play the guitar, photography and sport; especially Formula 1.
On Monday 27 th February, The Friends of St. Andrews put on movie night. Lots of people came in their pyjamas, some without some with teddies and they got a bag with sweets, a bottle of water and a packet of crisps. Everyone enjoyed the movie and at the end there was a raffle for who would keep the DVD Trolls. MUMS COME IN FOR MATHS On Mondays mums of class 6 pupils have been coming in to explore how we use maths and join our maths sessions. We explored how to find the area and perimeter of triangles, rectangles and squares. The parents said they enjoyed coming in to see how we use our maths skills. They struggled to catch up with our maths level but caught up in the end. A love for science was ignited during our Water topic so we decided to investigate science further by visiting the Winchester Science Centre. The children explored all of the wonderful exhibits including those focused on forces, electricity and magnets. At the end of the day Alfie said When are we going to do science Mrs Ballard? The children could not believe they had been learning about science all day because we had had so much fun! MathEMATICS Passports At the start of the school year, we were all given new math passports. Instead of having all the countries being on one passport, the different countries are on separate passports. The total maths passports completed are: 40 Year 3 and 4 Football Tournament On Friday 31 st March the year 4s played in the small schools tournament. They played 4 games, they lost 1,drew 2, and won 1 game. Unfortunately they did not get through to the semi- finals. The scores in there team were Olly with 3 and Nathan lodge with 1 goal. They all had a great time and are prepared for the next one. Year 5/6 Small Schools Football Tournament On Friday 31 st March Year 5 and 6 took part in the Small Schools Football Tournament held here at St Andrews. In total eighteen schools from our area took part. We played seven games; drawing one, losing two and winning four. We were thrilled to reach the final but sadly lost 3-0 against Broadchalke. In the end we came second overall and had a great time. Skittleball Years Three and Four On Friday 31st March Years Three and Tour took part in skittleball for the Small Schools Sports Tournament. There were two teams; Team A and Team B and everyone who took part enjoyed playing. Each team played five games; Team A won two games, lost one game and drew one. Team B won three games and lost one game. They played Winterslow, New Forest, Gomeldon and White Parish. Netball On Friday 31 st March, St.Andrews netball team went to St.Edmunds to play in the Small Schools Games Tournament. They played: Gomeldon, Winterslow, Broadchalke and New Forest. One game was a draw and we lost the others. Unfortunately, this meant that we didn t make it through to the final, which was played between Broadchalke and Gomeldon. The overall winners were Gomeldon. Page 3
Class 4 Worship Class 4 had been learning about ancient Egypt and showed what they had learnt as their Class Worship to the school and their parents. Class 4 sang us a song about the river Nile and played their recorders to a tune called Tutumkamen. We enjoyed hearing all the interesting facts about ancient Egyptians and how they lived there lives and all the parents enjoyed watching the assembly. Year 3 Class Assembly On Friday 24 th March Year 3 had their class assembly. Their parents, teachers and the whole school were there to watch. Using chairs formed into an aeroplane and a good dose of imagination St. Andrews were taken on a trip around the world. The whole school really enjoyed the show and the teachers are very proud of them for their amazing worship. The best part was how enthusiastic the children were about it all. The school really enjoyed learning all about volcanos and wonders of the world and had lots of fun looking at images of the areas. Class 1 Worship On Friday 3 rd March, Class 1 presented their Class Worship. Because they have been learning about animals, they sang a song about caterpillar, which we really enjoyed as it had actions too. They had painted pictures of their favourite animals, which they showed and explained to us. A small group performed a dance that they had choreographed to a piece of music called The Aquarium. Class 2s Assembly On Friday 10 th March, Class 2 presented what they have been learning about in their assembly. It was about African animals, new gadgets and they sang a song. First, class 2 showed their African pictures to the school. Next they had to sell their gadgets that they invented to the parents. After that they read out some witches poems that they created in Literacy. inspired by Shakespeare. Class 2 really enjoyed their assembly their favourite part being selling the gadgets in a dragon den style! Class 5 Worship On Friday 17 th March Class 5 performed their Worship to the whole school and their parents. It was about Vikings and how they lived. It included a Viking Blind Date Show, a Viking Warrior Competition and they showed some of their work including pictures and stories they had written. They also told everyone about the Viking Day they had had at school which they all said was really fun and very interesting. Class 5 have also been having singing sessions and at the end of Worship they sung us an opera song that they had learnt. On Tuesday 4 th of April, year 5 went to Salisbury City Hall and sang a song called Out Of Africa. Petra, the very talented singer, taught 20 schools including our class and then split us into two sections of the hall. We sang with the SAYM orchestra with the following instruments: violin, clarinet, guitar, cello, drums, trumpet, trombone, xylophone, piano and many more. The orchestra was really good and they played a few pieces from The Lion King, Puss In Boots and Eye Of The Tiger. We had a really good time and wish to do it again. Page 4
T lass Activity Points so far this year: Class 3 = 174,130 Class 4 = 257,870 Class 5 = 117,490 Class 6 = 341,210 (WOW!) Year 6 came 1 st with 341,210, Year 4 came 2 nd, Year 5 came 3 rd and Year 3 came 4 th. Eco warriors have been observing creatures in the garden, on the field and in their habitats. They have also been creating bird feeders and designing a bug hotel to replace the old one that has fallen apart. They have been planning a Spring sale to get money for the bug hotel and other great ideas to make the animals safe. A the sale you will be able to buy nice ornaments and decorations made from paints, recycled materials and things like plastic bottles that the children have brought into school. Once they have the money they will buy supplies for their bug hotel and of course will try and use recycled materials as well. After they have built the bug hotel they will continue to think of new ideas to keep the creatures safe around school and the environment. They have also done a survey throughout the classes about how they save the environment, Mr. Blake won, they made him a certificate that made from scrap paper and pens from class 2. This term some year four, year three and year twos have been participating gardening club every Tuesday after school. Children who have been active in gardening club have stated to us some of the things they have been doing such as digging up composts, trimming plants and digging up weeds. SCHOOL COUNCIL School Council has taken action on some of the ideas that people suggested such as; Golden Mile and Book Club. Grace and Ollie have started to make posters for Golden Mile but, havent started running the club although they have started the Book Club. In Book Club the older children pair up with the younger children and read books to them, some of the favourites are Charlie And Lola and books written by Beatrix Potter. The older pupils in Book On Monday 20 th February our school had a Cake Competition which was a big hit with the pupils of St. Andrews! We had a professional chef named Alex come in from the Trussell Trust to judge the cakes with Mrs Andrews and the SNAG Team. They were all amazing and we thank everyone who took part. The cake that stood out the most was Rebecca Harris handbag cake which the judges decided was the most creative and tasty! Jake Kerley s courgette cake also stood out and astounded the judges taste buds with its flavour. Because of its healthy elements, it may be converted into a school dessert. Page 6
